Actually that sounds pretty awful so I'm sorry I brought that up.

Re the OP tho there seems to be quite a bit of sentiment on here that anyone who earns slightly more than average is fair game for shafting with a massive tax bill. Obviously not something I agree with as those people will have already spent that money on mortgages etc

Would you consider yourself rich? Bear in mind Ian Gorham earned something like £10m last year.

Yes, I think I would. If I earned £70k a year I'd never have to worry about money. Just because someone else earns an obscene amount more than me that wouldn't affect my own standing.

So what are you if you earn £7.20 an hour?

In many cases your someone that gives far beyond their financial compensation in today's job market.

With house prices as they are and cost of living increasing the average U.K. Wage can't keep pace let alone those that have to slog their guts out for 40 plus hours on minimum wage

if you think earning 70k will rid you of your worries - sorry but you are wrong.

if anything - its worse

i constantly think about money. redundancy is only ever a few weeks away... if i loose my job - then how many of these type of jobs are there out there? not many i can tell you...

I don't really have to worry about money much at all now and I earn not much more than half of £70k.

Although it's clearly an attack on people's aspirations by setting the bar at £70k It does mean the pool of taxable persons is much greater than setting it at say £150k.

Let's be honest though, it seems unlikely Labour will be forming the next Government.

Hmm. I agree with the op on what constitutes rich, but I think to say it gets worse the more you earn is rather patronising to people struggling to pay the bills to be honest.

im sorry if you think that its patronising statement - that really isnt/wasnt my intention - im sharing my experience and what i feel .

for me it is hard when your earning a decent amount - primarily because the fall (should something happen) is just that much harder.

yeah i can see how people might draw that conclusion. the last thing i want anyone to think of me is a "look at me" - people who have met me on here know im not like that

i know im in a really fortunate position, ive worked hard, sacraficed a lot. i missed my first child growing up. cant really put a price on that - but i did what i needed to do to put a roof over our heads. in a couple of words "im fortunate" - but at the same time i can say "ive earned it"

all i wanted to make the point is that although you can earn a decent salary and have decent life - you shouldnt be under the illiusion that all your woes will go away. youll just have slightly different woes!

Yes he makes a fair point.

Facey may find it amusing that I lost my business after the last crash but when you find your income has reduced by 75% and you have a great many financial commitments based on the higher income then it's no laughing matter.

Well then maybe the secret is to spend in a similar way to the majority and not 'large it' just because you can ! (ie live a 30k lifestyle when earning 70k and have the luxury of being able to cover yourself in the hard times ) The secret is to accept that more/bigger stuff does not equate to more happiness.
Here's an idea why not even use some of that excess wealth to build a society/community that we can be proud of rather than say buying 'the misses' one of those stupid f'ing tanks to drive junior to the Montessori in and then off for a cafe latte!

Sorry, have I gone off on one ? (Eat the Rich !!)

This is simplistic though isn't it.

Define a 30k lifestyle if you have kids and commute to or live in London.

Or are we going down toilet bloo's let them move to burnley, road.

Presumably he thinks no one should live in anything bigger than a 5 bed house or drive a new car, or own a business premises, or run a business because to do any of those things you need to be earning a good deal more than £70k. His communist/socialist policy, tho noble, has been thoroughly discredited by the fact that it has not worked anywhere in the world for more than a few years before a new rich elite emerge who stay to take advantage of the poor. Happens every time, because people are inherently selfish.

My Dad was head of a comp......he's also rich (relatively), I imagine it's the obscenely rich who will have to pay most ......or they could make a better go of explaining 'the people's QE "

And I bet he has a huge level of responsibility, together training, expertise, skills etc, that he's had to pay and work towards. Very few people on £28 k have the level of responsibility or as many people depending on their judgement. That's why he should be paid appropriately and not be punitatively tas

Because you are not earning £70k doesn't mean you should live a s4ite existance. Life is more than a new car and sharp suits. When I got married in the early 90's I had a Radio rentalS TV and feck all disposable income.I still enjoyed life. Apart from the mortgage no loans have been made.If I can't afford it I don't get it.Simples. Now in my 50's I have bought a 2nd property...my Pension. People who punch into their pensions will get seriously ripped.

Yes, believe it or not there are people who don't just spend everything they earn but actually put a bit aside for the future.

Yes I know that, but do they have money left at the end of the month? Disposable income? This is what one means by "to their means".
