Brian Clough has to be up there - 2 titles with provincial clubs and 2 European Cups

True-I said that first came to my mind and they were the three.

If I gave it some thought I might arrive at a different answer although Don Revie would be nailed on alongside our two.

1. Alf Ramsey
2. Brian Clough
3. Don Revie (odious though he and his team were)
4. Bobby Robson
5. Bill Nicholson

Yep, as I just said in reply to another suggestion the three that I mentioned were the three that immediately came to mind.

If I thought about it I would probably have only one of the three I first named although the other two were special in their time.

Haven’t either tbh, just immediately came into my mind. Herbert Chapman as well probably worth considering and cloughie. I do think it strengthens the argument if a coach or manager has been successful in more than one club, internationally and at national team level as well. Rather than just at one club, although clearly Paisley was exceptional even though only at one club.

Beyond living memory, Herbert Chapman.

One of the games greatest innovators.

I always felt that Paisley inherited a great team and dominant club in Liverpool from Bill Shankly who’d have been in my 5 if he’d been English. Unlike the others mentioned who built teams and clubs, Paisley just had to keep things going. Probably a harsh and very unfair view, given the players he brought in, the trophies etc.

Definitely agree with Herbert Chapman and I would also add Ron Saunders.

Very difficult to compare what managers achieve in very different situations. I am surprised Ferguson hasn't been mentioned. What has happened before and since at Man Utd show it is not simply about having the money. However, who can argue with what managers like Pulis have achieved in the situations they have been in.

In terms of England's greatest managers, they have both been made in Ipswich. There is no doubt about that.

Alex Ferguson’s Scottish. If we went down that road, Matt Busby would have to get a mention too.

Ferguson is hardly likely to be included in a list of English managers is he?

If you increased it to top 10 Ipswich would have three.

Southgate has made the WC semis too. So is he as great an England manager as Robson*

Obviously Sir Bob's club achievements are well in excess of Southgate's.

technically we only lost by one goal in the 3rd place play off under Robson, but by 2 under Southgate. So Bobby still wins at international level as well!

I have always assumed, wrongly, due to his name, that Bob Paisley was a Scot.

After Bobby and Alf I'd settle on Chapman, Paisley, their records speak for themselves and both eclipse our 2 I guess.

I guess the 5th spot is a tossup between Revie or Clough for the last spot.

Alf won the World Cup. For me that tops all the other achievements by all the brilliant managers mentioned
