I feel grateful for my upbringing. I would not describe that as superiority.

I do find racist views to be wrong and need challenging. There may be some contexts where I would shy away from challenging them, though.

I am confused as to what point you are trying to make.

You agree it is wrong to hold racist views. Does that mean you feel superior to someone who holds them? Confused. Signing off now but will check on on your response tomorrow.

Yes I sometimes do feel superior to people who hold racist views.

I've noticed that's part of the problem in conversations I have about this. Like 'if only you knew what I know / read what I've read you'd understand and come round to my point of view'.

But that always has a whiff of dominance or arrogance about it I find. Like I'm trying to educate someone. And personally when I sense that from anyone else I'll dig my heels in and probably just become defensive. And they always think the same as me anyway, ie 'if only you knew what I knew you'd think like me'

So I'm just saying this is the template for arguments and discussions like in this thread (sorry to the OP). And it's.not one that I think is going to lead to a better world.

You genuinely laughed out loud at that? Wow. Lay off the drink, mate. I know it's Christmas but you're embarrassing yourself here.

Good one.

No.

Genuine question: when you come across someone with racist views do you feel superior to them?

Genuine question: do you feel people are incapable of change for the better?

That's all well and good until you remember that you're defending someone who is laughing at jokes about 'bumboys'.

Good grief man. Racism is all about feeling dominant and superior.

And you're worried about hurting the feelings of someone who sees themselves as superior because of their colour?

And then you talk of condescension?

Do you even examine your own reasoning at all?

If history has taught us anything it's that appeasing those who believe in the superiority of straight, able-bodied white folk is definitely a good thing.

I don't feel superior. Sometimes I feel disappointed, sometimes I feel dutybound, sometimes I feel outraged, sometimes I feel numb. I guess it depends on my frame of mind at the time and the level of racism demonstrated.

So we are clear, even if I don't feel superior, on an objective level, racist people are beneath me - Specifically on an interpersonal, logical-mathematical (hypothesis building), Intellectual and emotional level.

Thanks for your answer.

I think the interesting point you are trying to make (I don't think it came across well previous to this comment) is that how we engage matters.

It is difficult to accept we are wrong on something and most people do not listen well to opposing views. Attempting to empathise and engage should help. However, so many people seem to dismiss facts in favour of entrenched views and feelings that I find it very difficult to see how we can be persuasive. That is depressing really.

Very few people openly accept that they are racist. And yet so many are happy to accept things like Johnson's comments on Muslim women, former colonials and homosexuals and dismiss them as acceptable. I find it staggering that so many can find him acceptable. And there are many other examples amongst those in the cabinet too.
