Anyone been to Qatar? 10:10 - Feb 1 with 5660 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Doing some ads for their tourism, just wondered if anyone had any insights, what they love/don't love about the place etc.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Not sure what that refers to?

The suggestion (implied in your post) that because I have previously worked for multinational companies in Nigeria - I can not hold a critical view of someone working for a regime that is involved in widespread and well documented Human rights abuses.

(And I am not all that critical - accept Dolly needs work to pay bills etc.)

I'm just going to leave it here I think. Have no desire to offend again.

I imagine you're very pleased with yourself after that?

Yes.

I'm not against you doing the job, I fully understand everyone needs to earn to support themselves and others. I do think it's naive to believe it'll make any difference in the way Qatar behaves internally.

Qatar haven't changed at all since winning the world cup, all they have done is try to use it as justification that they aren't as bad as people say and the the world accepts them as they are.

Both that and tourism are political tools they can use to self-justify their continuing actions.

Am half expecting a "gotcha" post in a bit where Dolly tells us he is doing an evening course in "Bringing change in despotic regimes" and was looking for opinions.

Think Dolly's thick skinned enough not to worry about people having different opinions on the issues discussed. Been civil too tbf.

1. You asked.
2. My wrong assumption - happy to be corrected.
3. Nah, not for me.

The Apartheid system was brought down by the end of the cold war and the Americans finally reversing their policy of engagement and making it clear things needed to change.

At that point the white South Africans (who had hidden behind the argument the ANC were communists) finally realised they were without international friends. Throw in the experiences in Zimbabwe (Civil war which the whites lost) and they could see the writing was on the wall.

Those engaging with SA / breaking of sanctions/sports tours etc. achieved sfa other than prolonging the regime imho.

"The Apartheid system was brought down by the end of the cold war and the Americans finally reversing their policy of engagement and making it clear things needed to change."

Banks internationally were refusing to lend the country money which was bringing business to a standstill.

There was so much pressure from all sides that the SA government could no longer pretend its values had anyplace in the modern world.

The odd way some world leaders queued up afterwards trying to take some sort of personal credit after years of inaction was sickening.

You might have missed the bit where there were massive boycotts against South African products, Dolly.

No, I didn't miss it. But it wasn't the only tactic that brought about change.

You said "The debate (about the poor ethics) which Dolly raised" - no I didn't, I asked about Qatar as a holiday destination. You and others turned it into an attack Dollers fest, which I suppose is fair enough, I should've expected it. For the record I don't support any of the less savoury aspects of the regime.

Not sure inviting people there for holidays was one of the tactics employed either, tbf.

Anyway, how's the brainstorming going? Had any ideas yet?

In fairness though, you have a lot of material so far about what people don't love about the place.

You seem to have committed the cardinal sin of taking paid work on behalf of the wrong despotic Middle Eastern regime dollers.

Had you chosen to work on behalf of the Iranian Tourist board for example, despite their vile human rights record and execution of homosexuals and journalists, two or three on here who are a little selective when it comes to their moral compass wouldn’t have mad a squeak.

Sometimes it's just better to roll with the punches and have a laugh at things, Dolly. You'll do yourself a massive brain whoopsie if you continue to take yourself so seriously and play the victim all the time. Lighten up.

If we looked too closely at most of the companies we've worked for I doubt most of us would ever work again for someone else.

Then there's the things we buy. Other than Callis, has anyone got a completely clear conscience?

‘a little selective when it comes to their moral compass’
