I understand the sentiment, but if I was an MP it’s not something I could vote for so no, I wouldn’t bring it back.
What I would do is ensure life sentences meant carried out in a bag. No remission. I would have the US system with sentences that ran one after the other, not concurrently. Lastly these creatures would be self funding. No taxpayer money. Not a penny. They would either be funded by themselves, their relations, work for it or go hungry.
I would have this policy for all serious crime and repeat offenders. Prison is voluntary.

No, taking a life is not the answer and it is no deterrent. You only need to look at particular US states who have terminated people with mental health issues, who haven't been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt, and the completely innocent.

Sitters, who would the death penalty benefit? As mentioned by others, it would cost more than prison. I'm also pretty sure that most of the convicts would prefer the death sentence to a real life term in prison.I also don't think a death sentence would help the families of victims to feel any better in the long term.
I couldn't believe that was 20 years ago it only seems like yesterday, although for those poor parents I'm sure it still feels like it was yesterday. A world of hope and futures replaced with a world ' what if' & 'if only'

Fundamentally, the point I was making that I cannot sign up to the death penalty as a state instrument, but I do think the justice system is flawed and in need of a rethink.

Apart from the obvious argument about human decency, If the cost of state support is the measure for an individual's right to live, alot of people better watch their backs.

The argument that it's cost effective is deeply flawed as posted above so we're left to revenge, an eye for an eye. It's barbaric and has no place in the here and now.

I don't think anyone knows how they would react or feel really, it doesn't bear thinking of either. Doesn't mean we should have a justice system based on barbaric revenge though.

Knowing that the offender, if truly guilty, didn't really suffer in the way your family member probably did?
i mean you know as well as i do, they dont decide the death penalty will happen, then inject them whilst stood in the dock..... plenty of time for prison beatings, and time to worry themselves to death, before it being ended.... i could live with that
