It’s a farce. Can you imagine what you’d do if a bloke turned up at the door with a gun to encourage you to vote? Id be running down to the booth pencil in hand shouting I love Russia. The thing it that every voter could write nuts on the voting form and it’ll still come out 127% in favour of Putin, Blackadder style. It a show vote. A nonsense.

The 'special military operation' continues to reach new lows. on 08:36 - Sep 21 by Kropotkin123 | Here we go, will take them time to get to the front and even longer to find adequate equipment. They were struggling with supply chains before. I'll be surprised if the can cultivate anything that resembles morale. People already fleeing Russian too, to avoid conscription. Plane flight sales already in high demand. |
Interesting view on Putin’s latest move. There is a marked contrast between Ukrainians rushing to defend their homeland and Russians not head over heels with joy at becoming cannon fodder. https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2022/09/putins-war-and-his-rule-trouble/377587/ [Post edited 24 Sep 2022 3:41]

The 'special military operation' continues to reach new lows. on 15:27 - Sep 22 by Churchman | Interesting that some of the protesters will be in the army from today. Great way of snuffing out opposition. Protest too much and you presumably could wind up in jail then a punishment battalion. Highly motivated and professional are not words one is going to associate with that lot. |
Dead might be though! Quite a good incentive not to protest.

An interesting article on Putin from Tisdall in the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/sep/24/russia-ukraine-putin-ship- Not exactly complimentary, as ever, but he makes an interesting point that had Putin declared objectives achieved, he might have split the west and gained time with some sort agreement. As he hasn’t, he runs the risk of peripheral states pushing against Russia and Russia itself imploding - or of something catastrophic for the world in his desperation. Putin really is a peculiar little animal.

Gives context as to were protests are happening in Russia (seemingly everywhere!). "The Kremlin’s planned annexation of occupied Ukraine may take place before or shortly after October 1, the start of Russia’s normal fall conscription cycle, to enable the forced conscription of Ukrainian civilians to fight against Ukraine." This definitely won't lead to sabotage or desertion. The manoeuvre to wrap around and drop from the north on Lyman seems to be happening quickly. Already looking like some Russia held areas are hopelessly surrounded.

According to NBC and others the United States has warned Russia there will be "catastrophic" consequences if it uses nuclear weapons after setbacks in its war in Ukraine. It is up to Biden to make it crystal clear what happens if Putin goes down this road. For me, it’s all about giving Putin no options. As for Russia’s mobilisation, I don’t blame lads for legging it when the only option is cannon fodder with no training and a 40 year old weapon. Still, I’ve no doubt Russia will round up more than enough conscripts to fill the required numbers, but I’m not sure whether it strengthen or weaken’s Putin’s hand domestically. I certainly don’t see how throwing bodies into the front line helps his army.

Might be a day earlier than the first of October: 'There is a "realistic possibility" Russian President Vladimir Putin will announce the annexation of occupied regions of Ukraine when he addresses Russia's parliament on Friday, according to the UK’s defence ministry.' Oh dear. Going to be an interesting letter or two back home for some of these. ‘Can you send me a car first aid kit, tampons, something to sleep on. Oh, and some food might be handy’. No cause for worry for the folks back home when they get that letter - before the lads have even got out there. [Post edited 27 Sep 2022 17:00]

I couldn't see it, as I'm in a different time zone and it appears to be cut off, sorry. Not sure if you saw my post in the other thread, but bringing the decision forward to the 30th better fits in with the Russian Autumn conscription cycle (starts 1st Oct). This would suggest that forcibly conscripting Ukrainians is on the immediate agenda.

So the votes of the free and fair election are in. Yeah, right. Whoopee Mr Putin. I’m sure all right minded people will swallow that and say yep, everyone wants to join the cause, errrr bar all the lads not fancying death in a’holes in the ground or in a metal box. As I see it, the weak chinned little coward of a man will rattle his ever rusting sabre and threaten, but with every bit of nonsense he is closing the exit door for himself. Interesting commentary from Al J on the vote, if you can seriously call it that. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/27/russian-proxies-in-ukraine-claim-victor

Yeah this is real rogue state stuff isn't it. Backwards and weirdly childish in that the way these dictators do; blatant lies and propaganda are being portrayed as factual, despite the obvious ridiculousness. But when people are too afraid to argue with you I suppose you can create your own truths as you see fit.

Agreed. Hitler was still doing it days before his death in the bunker. Putin is exactly the same. Their power and thirst for it, their distortion of reality is something normal people just cannot comprehend. Thank goodness.
The 'special military operation' continues to reach new lows. on 04:59 - Sep 29 with 4329 views | WeWereZombies | Interesting article from yesterday suggesting a rift opening between Moscow and Astana: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/28/how-putins-central-asian-allies-accept- Understandably, given this news source, there is not too much about tensions between Orthodox Christianity and moderate Islam but the occasional use of imperialism as a term to show some dislike for Russia is telling. Also worth pondering is the use of draft dodgers (which might be more appropriate in some cases than conscientious objectors but is still harsher than necessary in my opinion) to describe the fleeing Russians, who sound like they have quite a difficult time ahead of them. But probably not as difficult as they would have had if they had stayed and been called up.

Interesting commentary on the fighting around Kharkiv up to early September https://www.npr.org/2022/09/29/1125278321/ukraine-offensive-russia-borshchova-kh It would appear that the Russians have plenty of kit, ammunition and soldiers who know their business - which runs a little counter to the western media view (propaganda?). I suspect as with all armies, quality is patchy. Some good, some bad some indifferent but from all I can see, Russia hasn’t really planned or is equipped for an attritional war and while they can throw conscripts into the meat grinder, I’m not sure it’s going to achieve much. It’s very crude. I guess that’s why there is so much nuclear threat and bogus elections to justify it.
