VAR what’s the point 20:10 - Dec 1 with 4261 viewsChondzoresk

That ball was over the line no goal…….unreal.

I thought it looked too close to call tbh - need to see an angle in line with the goal line.

Not sure - could be a situation like when people complain about corners not being in the little quadrant but the 'edge' of the ball will be over it looking down from a bird's eye view.

Ha - just confirmed that's the case on commentary!

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

First replay looked out. Well it must have closer than I thought. Still, the Japanese are doing well.

A big deal was made about the balls being microchipped, maybe that came into play but I thought the ball looked out.

ITV banging on about not seeing the VAR photos as if it's some conspiracy to make sure Japan get through ffs.

What's bizarre is they have a better angle which they showed when they were talking to the ref, which was close to being along the goal line, and that was very close (I would say a couple of mm of the ball may have been still on the line), but they seem to insist on showing the view from an angle which doesn't really tell you anything, and are getting very angry about it. As you said the hint that there's some sort of conspiracy that FIFA want to see Japan through for some reason just makes no sense.

The picture is inconclusive. It looks to me the tiniest fraction of the ball "could" be in play. If there is doubt the attacking side should have the advantage. It put Germany out so I don't mind if it was.

It’s correct decision, same as taking a corner / the ball doesn’t have to be touching the line / you can see a part shadow of ball on the line if you look which means it’s still legally in play. Elementary my dear Watson.

Watching on +1, got same. 2nd view was from overhead cam, ball was on the line - when the whole of it has to be over to be out.

There is still an angle error in this view. The goal bar does not line up with the touchline.

I've just watched the highlight on Iplayer and paused it at the exact time he crossed it. I've changed my mind, I think it was out of play.

Whilst I agree with you, Holmes, that the ball is indeed still in play, I would take issue with your assertion that the shadow provides incontrovertible evidence to that effect. For such to be the case, the light source for the shadow would have to be precisely aligned along the goal line, and we do not have that as proven information. Additionally, said light source would need to be at an infinite distance from the ball to ensure parallel projection of the edges of the umbra, if you will, assuming that the light source is a point source to allow for accuracy whether the ball is at pitch level or at any conceivable level above the pitch. I think we may safely discount bending of the light source due to the magnitude of c, although to do so does offend my sense of propriety somewhat.

It was in.
