away end looked amazing

Poll: Ladapo or Hirst to start up front against Peterborough?

How we lost that day still hurts. We bossed the whole game; they had one chance and stole it.
The away end was crazy. Coins coming across all afternoon. Fences up to the roof so all you could hear was coins pinging off the metal but plenty got through. Could have picked up a week's wages in change by the end.
It was a violent atmosphere but I don't remember any fighting in the ground.
Other than that all I remember is the back of the stand being chaos and scrambling up a grass bank to get in.

Was that the one where Bertschin scored early doors? Along with Shrewsbury, Nodge were a real cup tie bogey side in the early 80s.

I was very young you understand - but was in the river end. Frans looked amazing that day. Such close control.

And I was there for the milk cup semi which was heaving in the away end. I think the police decided any Town fans outside the ground were going in, regardless of capacity. It was the only time Ive been truly scared inside a ground. The crowd was surging and you couldn't keep your feet. My mate next to me just got surged forward and I didn't see him for the rest of the game. My arms were so tight jammed in I couldn't lift them up at times. And a Norwich fan threw a 50p that hit me gently on the arm and just nestled there as I couldn't get my arm up. Bloke next to me said thanks very much and picked it off me and put it in his pocket!

I was there with some school mates. Was 17 at the time. Definitely remember the coins.
Also remember throwing a toilet roll across the platform when we got off the train and being asked politely by a police officer to pick it up. TWTD.

Frans' last game for us I think? A time when it was all changing. It was a bit lively pre game, and norwich were always coin thowers. The semi. Never seen an Ipswich crowd like that, it was more of a rabid mob. Think we had a few guests as well. 1985, dark times for football.

That semi final was a crazy day, arguably the most crazy day ever.

We all met in the Maid Marion on opening time at 11am. Stayed there for a couple of hours but Canute Lee decided to lay in the road outside the pub and bring the road to a standstill.

Then got in our minibuses and drove into town, massive traffic jam in the city and everyone in the convoy just got out and started singing and dancing. Phil Man the builder was sitting on the bonnet of his Merc being driven by Day Day Jordan who I presume still hasn't got a functional driving licence to this day.

Forget what happened after that until Woolpack time and Woolpack was like the wild west. The Bell (which was their main pub at the time) was just down the alley and Ipswich done a fantastic pincer move on the place, they were screwed baby!

A little later a few of their older lot, directed by Patterson, came up the hill but were quickly disbanded.

Can't remember much about the game apart from the stomach blow of Steve Bruce's header.

As for the 1983 cup game - I got nicked prior to the game and had to share a cell with self proclaimed Mr Norwich / West Ham Bonzo (Gary Williams)

“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.” Boris Johnson canvassing in Henley, 2005.

The days when pubs shut from about 2 till 5! lads just played havoc with The fine city. The Woolpack...I remember seeing several undesirables from Ipswich who had never been to a football match in their lives but saw rich pickings round the shops in the chaos.

Norwich were a real cup bogey side in the 60s too - knocking champions to be Town out of the FA Cup at Portman Road - and the 70s when another ex Town player got a couple in the league cup.

Good point about the 2 - 5 thing, from my memory the pubs were open all day by then.

Seems like another life when pubs shut in the afternoon, I remember back in the day in the Racecourse we used to all go round one of the Brothers houses for a blues party where upon a can of lager was a quid and much curried goat was eaten. There was always a big card school going on and the obligatory dominos war.

With respect Lucan, your memory (like mine) is a little hazy....all day opening in England started officially in August 1988. I celebrated the auspicious occasion by doing the full twelve hours in the Waggon and Horses in Woodbridge, even got a certificate to mark the achievement!!

That's not to say of course that you couldn't get a drink before that between 2.00 and 5.00, if you knew where to go.

I can distinctly recall Mick O'Connell opening up Mannings before 5.00 pm so that we could dash from the North Stand for the first pint at 4.50....in the good old days when gamed would finish no later than 4.45.

Really? So I wonder what we did for those three hours?

1988 eh? madness! I remember The Haven used to open all day on a Saturday about a year before they were supposed to - or maybe they had a special licence, I don't know.

The weird thing is, I used to go to a lot of away games back then and I can never remember not being in a pub.

My memory is completely shot to bits.

I think this was the year my brother dressed in a guerilla outfit fo the game and obviously suddenly drew lots of attention. He was told to get off the fence by a bobby so he jumped on the pitch.
Mu mum's face when he was frog marched past us down the side stand. Priceless.

I sometimes think that those of us of a certain age ought to get together from time to time like those groups that help people with dementia, just to stave off the onset of senility for a few more years!

My daughter is a dementia specialists and she insists I have alcohol induced dementia - which apparently is a thing and the only curable kind of dementia - but you have to stop drinking so I guess I'm screwed baby.

I genuinely don't remember hardly anything most of the time. I spend half the time asking people if they have any idea of what I'm doing.

Yes was there.
How I managed to talk my dad into taking me I will never know. Way too young to have gone.
Mum and sister went shopping while we were at the game.
Makes it sound a lovely family day out!

I needed the toilet so went thinking would be able to find my way back to the same spot where my dad was.
No chance.
Ended up having to go all the way to the front, let out of the pen, sat on a St John’s stretcher pitch side while the police made a tannoy announcement for my dad to make himself known.
Cue every ones hands held up and cheering - obviously very funny.
Eventually joke wore off and spotted the old man still with hand up and off I clambered back into the stands.
Can just about see me as a corner gets taken in second half.
That was all fun and games - but Gutted we didn’t win.
At that young age and even with that team about to break up I’d got so used to them winning!

We used to get a train to wherever. You could drink on the train and then have an evening session in whatever town you travelled to, before getting the last train home. TWTD. I was in the mob and we had a railcard that gave us 50% off.

Clever thinking to be fair.

I always fancied being a train driver…. But my colour-blindness prevents it unfortunately.
