The first game I ever attended at Portman Road was against Manchester United and Bobby Charlton was playing.
A legend of the game and a true gentleman and inspirational footballer for my generation.
RIP Sir Bobby.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

People on here the other day were asking who is the best ever England player.
You need look no further than Sir Bobby Charlton.
A true, true legend of our game.
What a player and a gent.
R.I.P great man. Sad news indeed.

For me, it's a bit like what it must have been like for other fans as we were mourning SBR.

Knowing that a true national legend had passed on but it would be felt like a punch to the stomach for those that truly loved him.

Lucky enough to see him play many times for Man Utd and England.
Players are called great far to soon these days.
Sir Bobby Charlton was a truly great player.
One of the best I ever saw.
Very sad news.

One of those who my generation grew up with & who was always there in the background of our lives, along with Queen Liz II.

Even if you weren't much into football back then, 1966 meant you still knew about him, and that he was a true leader.

Enjoy that.

From seeing his mates perish in the Munich disaster to winning it all, it's a hell of a storied life and career he lead.

I was chatting with a younger (than me) United fan a few months ago about Rashford. I said he reminds me a bit of Bobby Charlton. He asked if Charlton was that good. My reply without hesitation was ‘He was better than that.’ Nuff said.

Took a volley from him full in the face at Upton Park when I was 10!! Took 3 ice creams from supporters to ease the pain. Years later at the Bob Hope Classic golf my wife was hit in the leg by a golf ball off the tee. Bobby and his wife fed her G and T’s at the clubhouse for the rest of the afternoon. Lovely man and total gentleman, great footballer, sad loss

In the days of Moore, Best, Pele, Eusebio, Beckenbauer, he would have got into any country’s team including Brazil’s. He was that good.

Rashford? A very good player and a cracking goal the other night. But a good few levels below Sir Bobby who really was world class and a true legend of the game.

Heard a tale some years ago about a remote civilisation somewhere in South America knowing only two words of English.

"Bobby Charlton".

I went to Sir Alfs' memorial at St Mary Le tower back in 99'. Sir Bobby spoke with great warmth about him and how they would run through a wall for him. How amazed he was to see how Ipswich played in 61-2 thinking this was the modern way. I was delighted to have seen him, and the other 66' lads who were there and are no longer with us. RIP Sir.

“Legend” is overused these days but totally appropriate here.

I always remember the thunderbolt shot he aimed at our goal at Portman Road in around 1969. Our keeper David Best smothered it in his midriff without batting an eyelid. Charlton shook his head in disbelief as usually when he hit those shots they stayed hit.
I think this was the match when we beat MU 4-0.
Anyone else? Am I remembering that correctly?

Sad news. Another gone with dementia too.
I remember the Bobby Charlton soccer school on tv during the school holidays.
It's unbearable to think that SGH is the sole remaining player from the 66 team.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Doesn't seem like 57 years ago to me. The joys of old age.
