Closed shop Premier League - interested tweet. 11:29 - Mar 4 with 2011 viewsMattinLondon

Just seen this tweet - it’s a few days old and I’m unsure how true it is.

But on the surface it seems as an attempt by the established PL clubs as a way to implement a loose closed-shop for the Premier League.

The EFL needs to play hardball knowing the Premier League are under pressure.

Sadly the Premier League will likely be pointing to us as an example of how it would still be competitive.

Truly impaired.

I'm not averse to there being a limit on player spending at a far more manageable level (70% sounds much healthier for football as a whole), but you can't go around giving your mates a boost to help them get back in the club!

The EFL should tell them to shove it. Parachute payments have already made the Championship largely uncompetitive (us being the exception).

…then it’s a great idea that should be implemented straight away.

If we don’t then it’s an absolute disgrace to football.

Sorted.

Enduringly lovable, intelligent and thunderingly exquisite.

Sadly it is true. Full article here:

Anyone can join the FSA, it's free and is the only organisation that seems to be campaigning to have an independent football regulator, and to see a fairer redistribution of money in football.

Edit: I am so desperate for ITFC to make it up this season - in part to stick one up to the PL and mess up their closed shop. Its obvious that what they want in reality is no promotion or relegation. They are just trying to do it using financial levers that make it all but impossible for non-parachute teams to compete.

They've been gradually edging towards making the Prem a closed shop for years.

As Herbi says, the EFL should tell them to shove it.

Where's the benefit for the Premier League? I get it could be beneficial for the current PL owners as the probability of them having an unfair advantage of getting back into the PL after relegation but how does it benefit the league itself, surely that just makes it stale and boring?

Also it's a bit short-sighted, just take Stoke as an example of a parachute team who invested badly over the years. If the teams at the bottom sign up for this they put themselves at risk of not just missing out on bouncing back up but potentially closing the door on themselves permanently.

Re the closed shop: even this season with Burnley and the Blades already getting the welcome mat out for perhaps Stevenage or Posh, there are still 5 teams, up to and including Palace, who could yet make the third relegation spot their own. Cut that lower third adfrift and the Prem bottom of table fixtures would become even less meaningful / saleable

This is exactly what the new breed of foreign owners want and crave: an unofficial closed shop and guaranteed TV money. You could argue the current system of parachute payments has already created this, but of course they want more.

It feels inevitable that the championship will eventually be swallowed up and rebranded/packaged as Premier League 2 to maximise global tv revenue and stop the financial cliff problems from relegation out of the prem. would really mess up Leagues 1 & 2 tho.
