Come Up and See Me was No 1 when I did my A Levels. What a great song, I still play it in the car alot.
I'm a bit younger than you but have a vivid memory of hearing it played when camping with the Scouts, in and around chickens and the like, at a farm somewhere north of Ipswich.
I saw Cockney Rebel twice on that first tour. First time was at Cromer Links Pavillion (supported by Bebop Deluxe). They then extended the tour and played at Theatre Royal in Norwich. Such a good band. Last time I saw Steve Harley was in Norwich two or three (probably actually four or five?) years ago. One of my all time favourites artists. Sad news.
I saw Steve Harley live twice in the early 1980s. The first time he had a relatively anonymous backing band, still styled as "Cockney Rebel"; the second time Duncan Mackay was on keypobards & guitarist Jim Cregan came onstage for the encore. I played "Best Years of our Lives" a lot in the 1970s but thought Timeless Flight was a very under-rated album, despite only reaching #18 in the UK charts & not producing a hit single.
Cockney Rebel were a terrific band and Make Me Smile a favourite song.
RIP Mr Harley
It was a great song, one of the finest ever written, but even before that was released, they were a very good band. Saw them live at Woods in Colchester in the Spring of 1974, a cracking show.
