And entirely caused by their cloud seeding over the last few days, which they’ve admitted to.

15 months rain in a day

Most of the Gulf countries do it.

Fake news?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/17/cloud-seeding-dubai-floods

Did cloud seeding cause the heavy rain?

In short, scientists say no.

In a statement issued to multiple news outlets, the NCM, which oversees cloud-seeding operations in the UAE, said there were no such cloud-seeding operations before or during the storm.

Omar Al Yazeedi, the deputy director general of the NCM, said: “We did not engage in any seeding operations during this particular weather event. The essence of cloud seeding lies in targeting clouds at an earlier stage, prior to precipitation. Engaging in seeding activities during a severe thunderstorm scenario would prove futile.”

Experts, meanwhile, have debunked the cloud-seeding theory. Maarten Ambaum, a professor of atmospheric physics and dynamics at the University of Reading, said that “cloud seeding, certainly in the Emirates, is used for clouds that don’t normally produce rain … You would not normally develop a very severe storm out of that.”

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

A couple of days ago, they admitted to about 6 hours of cloud seeding, which is more than usual, on the day previously (and backed up by Flight Radar maps), so most people put 2+2 together, including me.

Human 'tweaking' of the weather isn't a great idea though, especially in a country where their infrastructure is built for about 3 inches of rain a year, not 5 inches a day.

Good job we aren’t making permanent changes to the climate then

Fake news I'm afraid.

Not seeding. It isn't capable of that much difference. You might get 10% change to what's already there.

Professor Maarten Ambaum, a meteorologist at the University of Reading who has studied rainfall patterns in the Gulf region, said: "The UAE does have an operational cloud seeding programme to enhance the rainfall in this arid part of the world, however, there is no technology in existence that can create or even severely modify this kind of rainfall event."

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) told The National that no cloud seeding missions took place during Tuesday’s record-breaking storm.

“The NCM didn’t conduct any seeding operations during this event,” it said in a statement. “One of the basic principles of cloud seeding is that you have to target clouds in its early stage before it rains. If you have a severe thunderstorm situation then it is too late to conduct any seeding operation.

“We take the safety of our people, pilots and aircraft very seriously. NCM doesn’t conduct cloud seeding operations during extreme weather events.”

No-one said it was during the storm, but they admitted to it the day before and to doing more than usual.

The NCM/National is purposefully not answering the same question, which is very on message for them and most of the ministries in the UAE. They spend the vast amount of their time saving face.

Stop digging. It wasn't seeding that caused this.

I'm not digging, I'm responding to the point the NCM made about doing it during the storm. No-one had said they had, so they were denying something that no-one had stated.

As I said, I was only going off the extra activity they said they'd done 24 hours before and what other people in the region were saying at the time which was when my post was written.

Climate change is what causes activity like this, but messing around with the local micro-climate also isn't the best of ideas.

In the Gruadian article, people interviewed preferring to remain anonymous because *any* comment criticising their government, even re the weather, could have serious consequences …

I hadn’t realised things were that bad there.

I thought with your job you we're someone who would have some intelligence and not believe this kind of nonsense.

You do know cloud seeding can't deliver that volume of rainfall.

The two are not related. No one is denying they cloud seed, they do and its effective in arid climates, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the extreme weather event that occured.
