A horrible event but what on earth were the authorities doing?

I read about the earthquake and tsunami warning being lifted yesterday and then wake up to find a tsunami hit after the authorities lifted the tsunami warning:

A sad event all round.

Depends on where the earthquake epicentre was located and how the waves propagated from there, down the relatively narrow piece of water between Sulawesi and Borneo. Reflections off other bits of coast may have delayed its arrival. Also note that Palu is at the head of a funnel-shaped estuary, which will magnify the size of the wave (like the Severn Bore).

Not good (and there are reports of deaths), but perhaps the authorities were caught out by a particular set of circumstances.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Funny you should mention the Bore. We had a great flood down here in 1607, which some think was due to a tsunami. If you look south west of Ireland (via Google Earth) there seems to be a chunk of the continental shelf missing - some consider a slippage here to be the cause, but the British Geological Society disputes this..

The tides down here are so high that if it had coincided with low tide, there'd have been little or no flooding.

Wikipedia covers the flood here if anyone's interested:

I just saw the BBC feed on this, the Indonesian government are saying that the warning was still in place when the tsunami hit and was lifted during the following hour. Not sure if we can trust that but if true it does widen the matter to questions of effective communication at the time and education of citizens before the event.
