Is why I switch all appliances off at the wall before leaving!
Am a bit OCD about it, partly because it was something my late Dad always did when we kids were growing up, and partly because, during a thunderstorm right overhead at my last house, the half-full kettle of water which was switched on at the wall but not actually in use, went "bang" amidst a cloud of black smoke. If there'd been a kitchen roll or something next to it, a fire would probably have started. And that was despite there being a properly installed lightning conductor on the house roof (it was the highest object for a 100-150 yards or so around).
