in a conflict where a superpower is illegally occupying another people's land and killing civilians who try to resist. Hypocrisy or what?

Utterly blinkered hypocrisy. The Saudis being mooted is another one. And both our strategic allies anyway.

You’d have to go for somewhere like Chile or New Zealand – neither free from colonial forces but at least they’re not fighting proxy wars and defending a sphere of influence for us.

Or look at it another way, a nation some of whose senior leaders were born in the USSR/Russia (or their parents/grandparents were) but has the confidence of the West (particularly the USA) offers to mediate. They have an "in" on both sides.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I'd have said Jacinda Ardern would be ideal, if it weren't for someone saying (not sure who or whether correct) that Putin's a thorough-going misogynist.

And both miles to the left of Putin too.

It’s not an easy answer but probably best to avoid countries involved in illegal occupations and interventions themselves.

Ireland? Not in Nato and understand the complexities of negotiating occupied land and people with divided loyalties in that territory.

Good call.

South Africa can be a basket case but there’ll also be a lot of experience of theTruth and Reconciliation process which allows people to break the cycle of violence. After all, this is a war that’s reached its international stage but it’s been going on in the Eastern regions and with Crimea for longer than that. Finding a ceasefire there will need even more work.

.... and avoid leaders with elections coming up who appear more interested in raising their own domestic profile. Macron is going to change his focus this month with impounding British trawlers and phone calls to Putin both forgotten and failed.
