The sky at night 20:23 - Jan 8 with 853 views | Johnhoz | Back on at 10pm. Brilliant programme. Gonna have a 3D map of the Milky Way. It appears our galaxy may have 50% more stars that previously thought. It will take my mind off of ITFC for 30 minutes at least. Also I can start quoting perspective and such like

Remember standing in a lonely spot on the Baltic coast, how many more stars were visible than we're used to in Britain.

Or a feeling that you're sort of clinging onto the globe to stop yourself flying off into the void.

The sky at night on 21:12 - Jan 8 with 726 views | Gogs | I love that type of programme, gives me a layman's insight into a massively complex subject. 2 of my old school mates did astrophysics at uni, one of whom has a PhD in it. He builds his own telescopes and stuff and takes some outstanding photos now (specialises in photos of the moon and jupiter, but also does some 'local' galaxies too(i.e. stuff within a few million light years!); just as a hobby, posts a lot of them on facebook. Marvellou.s stuff. So if our galaxy maybe has 50% more stars in it, is there an implication for other galaxies too? i.e. are there 50% more stars in every galaxy, or maybe 50% more galaxies??? the possible numbers involved are mind-boggling

An interesting implication of that is if there are more stars, therefore more conventional matter, in the universe than previously thought, it reduces the need for Dark Matter, thus solving a great astrophysical conundrum.

Im lucky enough to live in a dark sky area, i go out to the garden sometines late at night with a blanket cup of tea and just look up. Its truely an amazing site. Id recommend anyone Get youself camping this directions . They say if you go deep enough in the National park you can see the milky way with your naked eyes

You need to experience an African sky at night. It normally involves a rolled fat one which makes you feel like you are going to fall off the edge of the world

It's a dark sky area because there is no electricity.
