Latest extract from my diary that I am keeping for my son to read when he is old 03:13 - Apr 21 with 1767 views | NewcyBlue | We have just crossed the equator, heading north towards Nigeria. In the last 24 hours Nigerian pirates have taken crew hostage and fired on a tanker that had a gun boat escort. They weren't even bothered by the gun boat and thought they would still have a crack. How are we going to even deal with that when we only have fire hoses to defend ourselves? We have had our security drills, our training, our briefings, and our discussions. I have 42 days left until I am back home. I can't even think of home right now. It is too far away, in both distance and time. The next couple of weeks will be spent in Nigerian ports, with the security risks and malaria risk, it is not something I am looking forward to. I have a good crew, my AB's and I work well together. I continue with the gym, it helps with my anxiety I think. It's ok to have anxiety. It's ok to be unsure. You may read this and wonder why I do this job. I do it for my time with you. I have so much time at home, we do so many things, and we never have to worry about money. Some day you will have to make tough decisions about life, love, and work, and all of these can affect your happiness. I have volunteered for our new Ice Class Ships. Maybe they will take me up into the Arctic where your great-grandfather was in the second world war. One volunteer is worth ten pressed men. It will be the summer when I am home. I will have some great things planned for us, some new things for you to learn and experience. A night under canvas, hopefully a clear night, one that we can sit together in awe of the universe. Until then, I will work hard, be safe, and come home in the best shape possible.

Thanks Benters. Sometimes I get a bit emotional writing some stuff in there for him. I hope it gives him an insight into the things I do whilst I am away. It must be odd for him to have me constantly there and then never there. He is a resilient, flexible lad. I am sure he takes it in his stride. Luckily I can call him a couple of times a week. He sounds more Geordie every time I call, or maybe I am just not used to hearing it any more.

blimey..those Somalians get about...🤣...didn't have that problem in my day Newcy because as you know the Suez canal was blocked and to get anywhere east we had to go the long way round....is piracy on the west coast a fairly recent phenomenon then?

Keep writing and hope you get taken hostage (joking of course). You'd have a bestseller on your hands. EDIT: you could have a bestseller on your hands even if you didn't get taken hostage. Latest extract from my diary that I am keeping for my son to read when he is old on 08:21 - Apr 21 with 1469 views | bluelagos | Just wrote an essay on Nigerian kidnappings/got deleted so will start again. Bottom line is they are commercial opportunists, not terrorists. They aim to keep you alive and you are worthless dead. So don't over worry. People tend to be treated well and released once the ransom is paid. So long as your company coughs up. The terror stories in Nigeria relate to Boko Harem who have no presence in the south. Stay safe and let us know how you get on. [Post edited 21 Apr 2017 8:26]

Ah, but he may have been bluffing... Remember how many times Kurt Cobain protested that he didn't have a gun...

Latest extract from my diary that I am keeping for my son to read when he is old on 09:59 - Apr 21 with 1373 views | NewcyBlue | MJ - They already know we don't carry guns. It's no secret. See my signature. They can use the internet to find out where we are. We don't turn it off in the High Risk Area. Withcdoctor -The Nigerians have been at piracy and hijackings for years. It wasn't as reported as much as the Somali's. As BL says, they are mostly opportunists. They are rather violent, certainly more so than their Somali brethren. We get no extra money for being in this area. Not like we did with the Somali piracy area. That annoys most on board as the risks here are much higher these days. Have a great day TWTD

Nigerian piracy is a serious problem & has been for many years but it gets very little coverage in the UK press I have always put the reluctance of the UK media to tell the full story of Nigerian piracy down to the fact Nigeria is in the Commonwealth and there are a lot of Nigerians in high profile places in the UK.
