Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2009 10:56

TWTD understands that Town are set to make a renewed attempt to sign Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy. The Irishman was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the former Waterford United frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The Hull move would have seen the Black Cats receive a fee of £1.5 million for Murphy, building up to £2.5 million with top-ups and it is likely that the Blues had agreed similar terms with the Wearside club.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

It's called the real world. Hull, Premier and higher wages v's ambitous club.

The owner appointed RK to do a job, why was your application over looked?

WickedBlue- What are saying?

Aside from the wonderful comments above, this (in my eyes), comepared to Priskin, would be a bad move. Up the Priskin bid rather than risk the cash on this chap. I' rather someone want to play here than get 90% of the way here only to be waylaid by Hull. Doesn't really speak volumes about his attitude, does it.

I forgot to add Jim Magiliton in that Moan/Whinge fest. I am saying what I have been saying for 40 years supporting this club. We have the biggest load of moaners and whingers in any football league.

I agree that we only want players who are committed, but to be fair, you can understand any player wanting to have the chance to talk to a Premiership club.

I mean, wouldn't you, if you had the chance?

degausser added 15:52 - Aug 5
Yes, I guess so, but when everything bar the t crossings and i dottings are complete, to then mess about and cause problems is a little selfish and probably related to greed as well. Priskin > Murphy.

Having said that, both would be nice.

The reality is that we don't know how far any of these transactions have progressed and what the other side(s) of the stories really are. Transfers can be complicated by players and managers egos and agents greed. I just believe that RK will get the best players that he can and do the best that he can for us. He has no reason to do otherwise.

I will support him until proven wrong.

haha maybe you did, but maybe you didn't, and seeing that mine has constrained proportions, mine should take priority to stay :P

Anyway, I too trust RK's judgement and am looking forward to battering the sky blues on Sunday. I shall reserve judgement on his signings at least until Xmas!

enough i say, lets all just wait and see - cork wasn't built in a day and we haven't even kicked a ball in anger in the league yet - one and all get behind tractor roy and his team and lift the roof at portman road - we are the twelth man !!!

Bring it on !!!!

Don't understand why we're bothering going back in for him, he turned us down originally when he heard Hull was interested, plus he's too over-rated in my opinion. Priskin would be a far better signing and would probably cost us less and in wages

Murphy has turned us down twice...enough is enough, up the bid for Priskin Roy, we don't want Murphy here!!

Apparently Lee Trundle is being released by Bristol City ... worth a punt, or waste of time?

parkinshair added 17:13 - Aug 5
I wondered about Trundle. Like Sharpe he kind of lost he's mojo. It is amazing what a change of club can do for a player sometimes. The Murphy thing reminds me of Jim with Nugent and Jeffers. I would be much happier with Priskin. I'm begining to wonder if anything will get sorted at this rate.

In response to devontractor...and others who seem to think Murphy is either rubbish, over-priced, or who shouldn't be given a chance to come back as he 'turned us down twice already' - if I offered you £500,000 a year and day-trips to Swansea, Plymouth and Peterboro or I offered you £1,300,000 with trips to Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea, which would you take?

Exactly - football is a business, just like any other. It's the agent not the player that's at fault for any last minute hitch, and you can't blame him for wanting to earn more or for playing in a better league. If he wants to come back to Ipswich, good on him - I'll certainly be giving him a huge cheer if he does.

And DO sign Priskin too RK....!

Norse - I doubt the wages between ourselves and Hull were that much different. If he turned down Hull then surely we must be willing to beat what they offered now. And personally I'd rather play for Ipswich and be part of something that is upwardly mobile and possibly win something and then go on to play against Man United for many seasons than to play against them one season and be stuck playing Plymouth etc for many seasons.

Paddy McGinty's goat could be a better option.

Quite simply, the whingers on here forget that at the moment we're an average sized Championship club. Granted we have a great history but I'm not sure any potential player is going to drop down a division because we won the FA Cup 31 years ago...

So, whingers, who are these 'big names' you're expecting to see? Torres? Drogba?

Get over yourselves, Lee Martin is going to be as big as it gets. Thats why its important to support any player that does come in.

devontractorboy added 17:52 - Aug 5
Norse I don't blame the player, I blame our club, Murphy is at best an average striker, who's only interest is the money. Would much rather of seen Rhodes given a punt this season, at least he was 'one of ours'!!

EssexWellerhead added 18:00 - Aug 5
Who is to say that approaches for Beckford and co haven't been made and we've either knocked back by club or the player himself? Murphy could prove a revelation as could Priskin if either or both came here. I'm placing my trust in Roy as he's not had the chance to show us what he can do with US! Roll on Sunday.

CarrotCruncher added 18:16 - Aug 5
Gets on my nerves all this complaining!!

Whatever we think we were rubbish last season, so give Keane a chance to turn it around. Lisbie, Schumi, Haynes....the list goes on they didnt cut it for whatever reason.

As for Rhodes? Well I would have been disappointed if he was our front man for this season. My thinking is we must achieve promotion this season or next. Then build a team capable of staying up. Can anyone think Rhodes and the above mentioned would ever make it in the premier?

So everyone, Roy may sign the odd pile of shite, but he may also get us up.
If you've given up already why not go up the road where Div 1 football is the toast of the city!
