Keane: Penalty Miss Crucial
Keane: Penalty Miss Crucial
Wednesday, 26th Aug 2009 00:14

Boss Roy Keane felt Tamas Priskin’s penalty miss was crucial during the Blues’ Carling Cup exit at Peterborough on Tuesday evening. The Town manager was unhappy about the defending which led to the Posh’s second goal.

Keane said: "The penalty miss was a big factor in the game of course, but if you don't take the opportunity you still have to deal with that.

"If we had gone 2-0 up it would have been very difficult for Peterborough to get back in the game.

"We started well and when we got the ball down and passed it we looked a decent team, but the second goal was a major disappointment.

"The first goal was an outstanding strike but the second was very poor defending. I've said it before but you just can't give away goals like that."

Keane says he is still looking to sign players ahead of Tuesday’s transfer window closure but says there’s nothing imminent: "There is no progress on the transfer front and there are no guarantees.

"We will have to see what the next few days bring us. I don't want to talk about any players who may come here as we may have to deal with who is still here."

The Blues boss says he replaced Pablo Couñago as the Spaniard is not yet fully fit: "We didn't want to risk him for too long because it's his first game back but his awareness and hold up play gave us a boost."

Posh manager Darren Ferguson was well aware that there were other bosses watching his players but says it would take large offers for him to consider allowing them to leave: "There are a lot of managers interested in my players, but last season we had 15 or 16 teams watching us some weeks so we are used to it.

"We will not sell any of our players unless it's a ridiculous bid so I am not concerned. I am backed by the chairman here and there is no chance of any of our best players leaving this month.

"We needed to stop the rot but it doesn't mean anything unless we get a win next Monday night against Crystal Palace."

What? Counago gave us a boost? But I thought he could leave? Does RK even know his own mind? I'll be singing for the boys on Saturday, but I will be going more in hope than expectation!

no what was curcial was you keane taking off our 2 best players when we were on top! its your fault we've lost & its your fault were we are in the leauge, if theres not an improvement i'll be giving up my season ticket. year after year its high expectations and then another dismal season, im fed up of giving my weekends & weekdays to watch crap every single season.

saying he is free to leave and telling him to go are very different, every player has his price, swansea met keane's valuation of pablo so he gave pabs the opportunity to speak to them, he always has maintained that he is more than happy for pablo to stay but if he or any other player wanted to leave he wouldnt stand in there way. him and priskin sounded a promising partnership tonight considering it was their 1st start togethr, after they went off we never really tested Lewis by the sounds of it (anyone else noticed the amount of chances we have had cleared off the line already this season? starting to annoy the hell out of me now) it will come together in the next few weeks, lady luck is not with us atm.

Would have loved having Sol Campbell out there in a leaking defence tonight. But I guess its tough for a CC side like Ipswich to compete for quality CB when they are being snapped up by league 2 sh*thole clubs.............

What is this world coming to??

Sol Campbell is earning 50k a week, that's why he's gone to league 2!!
Yes keane took pablo off but he wants him for the weekend, for me the league is mote important at the moment, if keane had left him on and he suffered a recurrence then you would be whinging he should have took him off!!

RK can't win! He takes off a player who's just back from a groin injury & he gets it wrong? We need to get a reality check, RK took over a mediocre side. They are fitter than last year, and it's work in progress! Come on you blues! The players left at ITFC will really want to wear that blue (or red) shirt; & that is something I can't wait to see!

After the stick I got for my comments on him, I guess a penalty miss is all part of Priskin "settling in"!!

Trouble is throwing money at the side is not necessarily the answer. At the end of the day he inherited a pretty poor side who obviously had had a pretty easy time under the previous manager. Far too many players were playing week in week out know matter how poorly they played. Look at Richard Wright and how poorly he played for a far few games at the start of last season. Was he dropped for a keeper we all knew was good - no!
Keane has obviously come in and got stuck in and some dont like it. Fine move on!
Trouble is there are a few on here who think we should be top of the league and certs for promotion. Get real and take the blinkers off. No one has a right to win every game - or even one!

Getting the players to play to his way of thinking will take time but I honestly think he will get it right. Give the team a captain who leads and get that right formation and that first win will lead to many more.

And to the person who said he will give back his season ticket - do it. You are not a supporter!

i dont think its just me on here who are now worried we are now 6 games in and have yet to win (yes i know we won on pennos) we looked to have nearly a full strength side out there yet we could not beat one of the poorer sides in our league yes it was just a cup game so no 3 points droppped but come on we are a shadow of our former selves we need to get 3 points on saturday or the hill will start to get even steaper to climb COME ON GUYS SORT YOURSELVES OUT

Quote RK "I've said it before but you just can't give away goals like that." Yes we know, we heard it week in week out from Jim and now RK is saying the same thing. Of course we all know we are not stupid! It's doing something about it when it happens every game is the aim not telling everyone what is bleedin obvious. We have heard it all before! Don't tell us about bad defending RK we are experts. It is your job to sort it out!

Have to agree with floridaboy. If you aren't prepared to support your club during the tough times, then you are better off staying away. I'd rather see empty seats at PR than listen to idiots booing their own team. We all get frustrated when things don't go our way, but it's the club that we should support, not just the manager or players who happen to be in place at the time.

If RK is such a motivator why does he never get off the bench. Take the Palace game Warnock was up and shouting all the time and RK never moved. RK didn't pick up a mediocre side. A few players brought into certain areas would resolve the issues. But by the looks of it he is using a hammer to crack a nut hope we get the right end result or we are going backwards and not forwards. Money isn't everything and I fear this maybe a long haul. Hope RK proves me wrong.

ok we lost but i would much rather have 3 points on saturday. ok a win would have give us all a bit of belief and the team confidence but saturdays another game, hopefully we will win saturday and once we win one their will be no stopping us in my opinion as it seems a confidence thing .

seen on the bbc sport website were front runers for the celtic and scotland captain stephen mcmanus would be a great signing and a perfect player to play with bruce.

Get him and then a midfielder i see watson been mentioned and a forward in the mold of dave kitson i think we will be going places as these 3 would be quality.

R K was probably too weak to move about, he,s had sod all to eat since coming to I T FC...in our case IT IS ALL OVER TILL THE FAT MAN SINGS . Even the most optimistic on here are becoming subdued.

ruthiev and ipswich1984 - couldn't agree more. While i don't agree with all decisions roy has made so far, taking pablo off was totally justified for the reasons mentioned. I'm as frustrated as the next town supporter by our start, but we will get rub of green soon and i'm sure with huge unbeaten run will start to build up a head of steam. some people on here are just so negative and love to say "i told you so" eh suffolk_n_good?

Pity we didn't have somebody in the team who has never missed a penalty.

Oh we did - and along with several other players let go his replacements are much, much worse

healey and deleaney dont look good enough for norwich, let alone us, both played poor again both made bad mistakes and errors, Quinn, pablo,Bruce and R wright were our best players, build a team round these

A few years back, Palace were bottom at Christmas yet made the play offs, they nearly repeated the feat the following year.
I'm not panicking yet but I do wonder at RK's naivity with the press. Telling the world that you have players who will never play for you again, before you have lined up replacements, and then play them anyway, is ludicrous to the extreme.
He says that he has run out of patience and can't give them any more time. How much longer will he give Delaney and Healy, the latter being bought simply to give his old mates at Cork a financial lifeline?
It is evident that RK does not know what his best team is yet and he is trying to get the players to do what he wants rather than mould the team around the strengths of his key players
I hope RK is not like his Man Utd counterpart Bryan Robson who had one good spell then cocked up everywhere else he went.

It was the turning point in the game. If we'd scored the pen, game over.

"The penalty miss was a big factor"...another major factor Keane was publicly stating certain players will never play again and embarrassing the club. You just wouldn't hear that from real managers. Another factor is trying to mould everyone into a Roy Keane type player. Owen Garvan is a top player and is suffering because hehe plays a different type of game than Keane did. He's our most creative player and he's probably on his way out cause of a short-sighted manager. Fortunately Keane will probably walk out if things aren't going well so lets hope our next manager can appreciate different players can bring different qualities.

Some people seem to be saying that if you criticise the team's performance/manager you are not backing the club. Rubbish! I think if people take the time to post their views on sites like this it is because they have a passion for the club. Against that I would be slow to boo the team at a match (although occaionally tempted!), I think that can have a negative impact on the team, but (no disrespect to TWTD) but I doubt what's posted on here will impact on team morale, certainly not my rantings.
I have been disappointed with Keane to date, he keeps repeating the same mantra about soft goals and that we are one or two players short of a promotion chasing team, but surely he should have used the summer to sort that out, not September when we are already 9 or 10 points behind those pressing for automatic promotion. Some of his signings have been questionable, the same was said about his signings for Sunderland, but he did get them promoted from a very similar position.

I don't really care about last night's defeat - in the end it is probably irrelevant and just to prove I am not totally anti Keane he was right to take Pablo off.
