Town Agree Fee for Sunderland Midfielder
Town Agree Fee for Sunderland Midfielder
Wednesday, 26th Aug 2009 17:16

Town have agreed a fee with Sunderland for midfielder Grant Leadbitter and have begun talks with the player, according to PFA representative Matthew Buck. The 23-year-old was a regular in Keane’s side at the Stadium of Light.

Buck, who is acting for Leadbitter, said: "A fee has been agreed between Sunderland and Ipswich for Grant and we have been given permission to open talks with Ipswich.”

The Chester-le-Street-born player, who has won England caps at U20 and U21 levels, is a Sunderland fan from childhood, coming the youth system on Wearside.

The 5ft 9n in tall midfielder, who Keane has previously compared to Paul Scholes in style, made his first team debut in the 2003/04 season and has now made 69 starts and 54 sub appearances, scoring 11 goals.

Currently, Sunderland’s longest-serving player, Leadbitter, who is reportedly also interesting one or two other clubs, spent time on loan at Rotherham in 2005.

Keane was understood to be at Monday’s Norwich City-Sunderland Carling Cup tie in which Leadbitter played.

Bruce did say he wasn't for sale a week ago, but this could be a great addition...wonder what the fee is though? Not so fussed about Carlos Edwards though.

Please tell me can we not find any decent players who are not ex Man Utd, Sunderland or Irish. I was the first to moan about Jim but although early days when is RK going to waste more of Marcus Evans money.
I will give RK until Xmas then he may get an early present !!!!

Saw him in action against Norwich City the other night. I thought he looked quality. Sky Sports also reckons we're after Carlos Edwards.

We are all excited but the hard work has to be done in persuading players to come to the countryside and play for a team at the foot of the division. I will not celebrate until the signature is on the forms. Rest assured that idiot from Hull will now have been alerted. Carlos Edwards would be excellent as well as he could replace the struggling David Wright - heaven he has gone backwards. Top it off with Kevin Phillips - oh well we can dream.

Heart on sleeve type player, good stuff!

Not sure if the Mcmanus thing is completely believeable, it said on sky sports that he was only out of the game tonight with arsenal due to a knee injury.

A big Celtic fan at work who gets the Glasgow daily paper said that McManus is coming to us, recovering from injury but close to return...quality player!

would be a great signing, would play well beside norris when he's back, both hardworking players. Bring back REUSER! still need a proven goalscorer though..

Hello all, Sunderland fan in peace.

Grant, if he comes, will be a cracking signing for you.

A decent enough player who has just dropped down the pecking order at SAFC with our signings of Cana and Cattermole. No disrespect to ITFC or the Championship, but I'll be very surprised if he doesn't interest the likes of Hull, Wolves or Wigan.

Forget the daft Paul Scholes comparisons - he's nowhere near that level and never will be. What you will get however, is a very professional and honest grafter who probably lacks the pace and that x factor to be a real top quality midfielder. He has got a decent shot on him mind, and he's definitely capable of weighing in with a few goals.

Good luck for the rest of the season and especially good luck with Royston - it'll certainly be exciting - while it lasts. ;-)
