Doncaster Interested in Stead
Doncaster Interested in Stead

Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll has admitted that he would be interested in signing Town striker Jon Stead, if his club could afford the 26-year-old's wages. Stead is believed to be one of the players Town manager Roy Keane has told is unlikely to play for the Blues again.

O’Driscoll said: "He's a good player with a good character and he has been mentioned to us before.

"His agent seems to feel that he would thrive on the environment down here, but as soon as you mention the dreaded word 'salary', our interest slightly wanes a little bit because of the cost implication.

“He's a very good player. We'll always follow things up, but at the back of your head, you'll always be thinking 'can we afford it?' And the answer is probably not."

Stead is contracted to Town until 2011 and the Blues would want to recoup a fee somewhere in the region of the £600,000 they paid Sheffield United for the former Huddersfield and Sunderland striker a year ago.

Meanwhile, reports in the North-East say Sunderland pair Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards are on their way to Portman Road to discuss personal terms today, a fee having been agreed for the pair. There is as yet no confirmation as to whether Town’s reported interest in Daryl Murphy and Nyron Nosworthy has reached a similar stage.

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Franny Jeffers has been transfer-listed by Sheffield Wednesday after his red card for violent conduct in the Owls’ Carling Cup defeat to Port Vale earlier in the week.

Maybe we can get Jeffers in a swap deal for Garvan (plus some cash!) as they are apparently after him.

I hope we don't sell Stead. If we sell any striker it should be Pablo, if you calculate all of Counago's easy misses last season we would of been in the play-offs!!!

gooders, if you calculate all of magics losses and put them into wins, we'd have won the league!

I think we need a player like Pablo, because at the moment we dont have a player that will hold the ball up, thread balls through to the other striker, make things happen etc..

Coming from Counago. I just don't rate the player at all. Out of Priskin,Stead,Wickham and Counago I know which three I would keep.

I rate Stead, I would like to see him given a chance with what we hope will be a more creative midfield by the end of the transfer window. Lets be honest all he has been given is hopeful long balls for 90 mins.

Also a very handy presence at corners. We have the cattle at the club, just haven't found the right combinations. I would be disappointed he and Garvan were sold, surely they are worth keeping as fringe squad members????

Selling more strikers - just what the team needs at the moment. Look how many Rhodes has scored. Basically, if you're not oirish or from Sunderland or ex Man Utd also ran, you're not playing for Ipswich. Steads a good striker at this level. Try motivating him! RK won't see Christmas. Guaranteed.

I would keep Stead for his work rate alone when you compare him to some of the players around him,& why isnt anyone ,since Swansea, asking for Pablo.

An incredible array of comments as usual.Confirms my belief that many of my fellow ITFC fans are woefully unknowledgable about the game.
Facts:
1) Garvan is easily our best midfielder.
2) Stead is our best striker
3) Roy Keane doesn't know his a**e from his elbow

1) Hae you seen Garvan play this year? He'smade one good pass during his time on the pitch.
2) Are you sure? Stead isn't our best striker, he's somewhere off that I'm afraid.
3) You muppet!

It's funny how you can seem to comment on your other ITF supporters and there array of comments when you clearly have no idea what you're on about, dear boy.

Very happy to see Stead go. If it was between Pablo or Stead what would most fans want? Stead has failed to score since the end of last season (which includes pre-season). His performances this term have on the whole been awful. People have - wrongly in my opinion - slated Priskin, who has only been at the club for a short while, yet Stead who was a rash JM buy has failed to impress for much longer.

Simply not good enough in my opinion.
