Middlesbrough Targeting McAuley? Monday, 31st Aug 2009 23:20
Middlesbrough are reported to be considering a £1 million move for Town central defender Gareth McAuley. The Northern Irish international has lost the captaincy at Portman Road this season and was dropped for the recent game at West Brom.
Boro have sold Robert Huth to Stoke and may sell David Wheater and the Teessiders firming up their interest in McAuley may depend on whether the England U21 international defender moves on before the transfer window closes.
McAuley, who is due to join up with the Northern Ireland squad on Tuesday, was reported to have been involved in a bust-up with manager Roy Keane prior to the West Brom game, a claim Keane subsequently dismissed.
The Blues are believed to be closing in on signing Sheffield Wednesday's Richard Wood, which would almost certainly see McAuley relegated to the Town bench, Alex Bruce having been handed the captain's armband and likely to fill one of the central defensive roles on a regular basis.
Boro are also interested in signing long-term Blues target Daryl Murphy from Sunderland, according to sources in Ireland.

i think he would have been good if jimbo didnt put so much pressure on him, he would have settled with less pressure and could have been sol,id but again jim ruined that, so thanks GMac but goodbye

@Luke8644 You are a plonker. JM is the blame for everything. He put too much pressure on the wee poor boy, the fact he was on 10k a week to kick a fecking ball he should be under pressure to perform. Think what your saying before you speak out of your ar$e boy.
tommyblue added 06:54 - Sep 1
if he was 21 when we signed him then made him captain then yeah that would be putting him under pressure, but the mans 27 - 28, its simple he is not good enough

Never actually thought McAuley was that bad, and I think he'll be better without the captaincy, less weight on his shoulders.

afaid i am in the minority and thnk without the captancy he would do a good job....... him and bruce central would be pretty sound, Balkenstine scares the life out of me each time he gets the ball........ ok so he is 'learning and growing' but surely not at the expense of loosing every week :-)

I like him and as I watch him play for the glorius NI as a right back with a fantatsic long throw, I think he's been hard done by. At the start I though he was slow and lumbering, but he has grown on me.

I thought McAuley looked better on Sat without the added pressure of captaincy. But given the negativity on here and on the terraces against him, its probably best for him if he does go ... but as someone else said - if Boro want him, he can't be THAT bad??!?

McAuley is a pretty decent defender who will do a steady job at any club. Unfortunately for him I think his body langauge and hang-dog expression make him an obvious target for our club's shameful bully boo boys.

I also think McAuley is a decent, solid defender. Keep him for another season and see how he improves without the camptains armband and if he plays poor then sell him at the end.

Rayman, I couldn't agree more! McAuley is a very decent defender. There was one captain on that pitch on Saturday and it wasn't Bruce! He commanded the back 4 [as best they'd listen!] He made a couple of stupid passes at the end that put a black mark on a very decent 90mins. He made a couple of top class tackles and only looked out of place when left with a static midfield and a hopeless strike-force stood still leaving the Centreback looking for the impossible ! Space [mind you he did find the one are with no players in it twice!] Selling the Big G' for £1m is not a good deal. Wood? have you all gone mad! We need at least an impact in the back 4, flair in the middle. Trotter hasn't a clue and looks awful at best. Lil Jack C looks to be class with some quick passing and plenty of backbone - Gio or someone of that ilk should be top target for us at the moment. Not that sure we can blame the frontline too much - the 7 or 8 behind are just not making any chances for them to take! - apart from Pablo who else put in a good shift up front against PNE...? Shame on us as so called Fans - The North Stand at times gave it go at the end of the first half but the Atmosphere in the South has gone [apart from about a small group of 20+] - Fans? NO, we were far from fanatical... I came close to loosing my voice as always but then that's me... I love ITFC, the 450m round trip from Bath is a balls ache at best. The biggest let down for me was the so called 12th player, us! Don't sell the Big G, give him a year - it seems no remembers how good he was at the end of the season and the injury picked up in May! Most of the comments on here have some truth but many are just frustrations at a club that should be doing better. Don't try and put that on one person! What CB are we going to get that's much better than McAuley for the same money? get real. C'mon you Blues

mcauley was our best outfield player in the 2nd half of the season, so i'd love to hang on to him if we can afford it, we need some continuity in the club! a million's a reasonable price though, just hope it doesn't go through at 500k or something ridiculous...

Godzilla, spot on about the bully boo boys, most of them men in their forties and upwards just being plain horrible to what are young boys in comparison.
DrJeckyll added 11:10 - Sep 1
Corshamblue, spot on mate. The atmosphere in the south stand saturday was absolutely horrible. I came away feeling really horrible and it had nothing to do with the game, as yet again i think their was a marked improvement in performance up until the 12th man started getting on the teams backs and undermining the effort again. These people are the true enemy!
