Laws Confirms Town Offered Swap Deal
Laws Confirms Town Offered Swap Deal
Thursday, 3rd Sep 2009 09:34

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has confirmed that Town offered the Owls a swap deal which would have seen central defender Richard Wood join the Blues. Striker Jon Stead is again reported to be the man who would have moved in the other direction.

Laws said: "I'm not going to deny Ipswich made contact. But we were not interested in the deal they were possibly talking about.

"I spoke to Roy Keane and it was more to do with players swapping. What we would be looking for is cash but we don't have to sell.”

Laws says he is now looking to secure Wood on new terms at Hillsborough: "I'm hoping we can conclude a new contract with him shortly.

"Although we know there is interest out there in Richard, we're happy with him and he's happy here. He's already indicated that he's enjoying his football and wants to get the contract sorted out as much as anyone else."

The Blues may now have to look elsewhere for central defensive additions when the emergency loan window opens next Tuesday.

Get Jay DeMerritt in Keano & stop trying to offload Stead-the guy deserves more of a chance.

Let's just hope Laws doesn't offer Jeffers as an alternative. He's been a total waste of time and money at SWFC.

Although stead hasn't scored goals galore since his arrival, noone can fault his work rate. I think with wickham being a similar build who looks like a bigger goal threat stead may well be off soon. Shame really, we've got worse players in the squad

Jon Stead seems to very much divide opinions.

It seems for some having a go at him is seen to be the accepted thing.

For me his work rate is always good, not our worst performer, oh and last seasons leading scorer.

Has suffered this season in the early game as the spearhead of a 3 man attack. The system did not work and left him isolated. Not had much of a go in a 4-4-2 set up

I think he deserves as much of a chance as the rest. So lets lay off the poor guy.

I agree ,it seems a lot of our players are coming in for stick at the moment lets get behind them and watch their confidence rise, they are suffering from all the pre season hype that everyone has put on us. A good win is all we need to get us going again

Personaly I found Stead to be an excellent buy last year but in the games so far this season he just doesn't seem in the game especially in the Preston game when he came on. I hope it is just poor form

when stead picked up a head knock against Preston, he was clearly concussed and want with it, Keane had used all of his 3 subs so you cant blame Stead for that at all

He may have also had an inkling that he is surplus to requirement at town for the Preston game, would put me off!!

shame it didnt happen as we need a cb more than a forward, even tho i do like stead and i think he could do well for us this season but dont think he will get much of a chance

I've noticed Stead gives the ball away a bit much which is quite a sin when the team have worked it all the way up to him. Stray passes.. I think he's not a Roy Keane player, I thought he was good but not so sure this season yet..

I firmly believe that Stead is suffering an inferiority complex after Keane discarded him at Sunderland. It must have been the lads worst nightmare to see the Keane appointment. I like Stead but he is not a natural finisher and has to really work for his goals - said that I hope he stays as a member of the squad. I agree we badly need a centre back in the mould of Damien Stewart or Shittu and until that position is sorted I will not be content.

Stead deserves a better chance playing upfront on your own for the first 5 getting nothing created for you must be difficult, so whats the porr lad meant to do?
