Big Crowd for Town-Newcastle Clash
Big Crowd for Town-Newcastle Clash
Tuesday, 22nd Sep 2009 12:13

Town are expecting a crowd of around 27,000 for Saturday’s home game with Newcastle United (BBC2, from 5.05pm). So far the club has sold 25,000 tickets with Newcastle taking up the whole of their 1,800 allocation in the Cobbold Stand.

Ticket office manager John Ford told the club site: "Tickets have been selling well for the game and as well as the attraction of Newcastle coming to Portman Road, there is obviously the Sir Bobby Robson factor and the stand being renamed.

"We are closing in on 25,000 tickets sold and by kick-off on Saturday, we could have another one or two thousand on top of that.

"As always with a bigger crowd, we advise supporters to get to the game early."

SOUTHCAOSTBLUE you are not being petty, all the media coverage is of NUFC, they are perceived as the bigger club, hence Sir Bobby will always be linked with the Geordies.
To any Geordie who reads this,I hope you realise what an honour that is, and as a Town fan, born and bred, I welcome you to the wonderful world of Sir Bobby fan worship.
Sir Bobby didnt belong to us,NUFC or Barcelona or any other club that were lucky enough to have him as their manager.... he belonged to football, what other manager can that be said about?

Now its up to us, ITFC, to show the media that NUFC may be perceived by them to be a bigger club, but we are the better TEAM, get behind that team for Sir Bobby and all at PR present time and lets beat those Geordies, and put ourselves on TV for weeks to come as the team that did Sir Bobby proud!

COYB!!!!!

personally i think it will be close 2 a sell-out on what will be a very special day and i think we could sneak a win here which will kick-start out season, at the end of the day things take time to work and if not this season we'll be a much better team next year and people should get off roy's back if he wasnt up for the challenge he wouldnt be here, we've all got to stick together we all want instant success these days but we all got to take the good with the bad nobody said it would be easy and this is proving to be the case. keep the faith!!

ToonBilly...couldn't agree more! Although Mugsykets has a point but I think it is more a rant against the media and their very short memories and outlook rather than at Toon fans.

Let's hope for a top game, 5-4 Town would be great, I'm sure our defence will lend a hand to NU at the back. Let's hope Priskin and Pablo make some magic.

If the lads don't get the lift from this game to kick start the season, not sure what will!! RIP Sir Bob

Toon Billy, well said, i work at a large offshore engineering company in Lowestoft with many many Geordies / Macems and Smoggies who work here, we also have a very large construction site in Northshields Newcastle, the warmth in rememberance of Sir Bobby by all the lads from the North East regardless of their allegiance is overwealming and many will be attending the game on Saturday. Yes we all feel that the man was "ours" he loved this club unconditionaly and i'm sure that he loved Newcastle fondly as well as all the clubs he graced with his services. The Geordies will be in full voice as always which if you have experienced it is something to behold and difficult to match so forget about the media and belt it out for Sir Bobby. After all ,the great man did label us as Zombies many years ago so lets hear it for him.

To Toon Billy and others ,
I would love to see a sell out 30,000+ on Saturday in respect of a great man who loved BOTH clubs but for all sorts of reasons this may not happen ; televised , credit crunch , odd time, and too many prem shirts in town etc.
It seems a shame that there are NUFC fans who want to come to the game but cannot get a ticket.
It would be great for once if the NUFC were allowed to buy any tickets we had left over. I am sure that the mutual respect for Bobby will prevent any trouble , create a better atmosphere and show the rest of the country of plastic fans what real football fans are like.
I know its completely different sports but it works at rugby , cricket etc..

I only wish I was going on Saturday.

I genuinely think this will be a game where shirts are swapped in the pubs, the atmosphere will be fantastic from start to finish and Sir Bobby's name will be sang loud and proud from every part of the ground.

You might have to excuse a bit of abuse thrown at your current manager though lol

It should be a genuine occasion though and everybody should enjoy it in a manner befitting the great man

Children, children, children!

Let's not squabble over such a great man, we all know he history, including the fact that he owned and regularly used his house in the Ipswich area from 1969 through to time he got the job at St James'.

It is not the Geordie's fault that the media focus on his time there, most of the so called journalists were still in nappies when he was in charge of what Addidas described as the 'best team in Europe' in 1981/2.

It was the older, nasty scribes who dragged up his private life, rubbished him, and even accused him of betrayal while boss of his beloved England team - it is them who should be ashamed, making him part of a turf war between Murdock and Maxwell newspapers.

It is also not the Geordie fans fault for what their stupid chairman and directors did, but at least Shephard did say he will go down as 'the man who shot bambi' again not very respectful, but I understand what he was at least trying to say.

It is also not the fault of 99.9999999% of Geordie fans who did not spit on him after he dropped their beloved Kevin Keegan; they were just a few nutters which all teams have attached to them.

So let's join together on Saturday, and together sing 'There's only one Bobby Robson'.

I support Ipswich but i don't begrudge Newcastle for the media attention they are currently getting for Sir Bobby. We don't need to shout from the rooftops how much we loved him... it's obvious that we do. He is in our town centre and Portman Road! We don't need to talk to the media and oversell our love.
I can't wait for Saturday - it's going to be electric!!!!!! (Although that wasn't a swipe at the newcastle away kit) Ha ha ha.

As a Newcastle fan I feel your comments about us are totally unfair. It was the board of Newcastle United who sacked Bobby Robson and not the fans who were also disgusted at the way he was treated by the club. Remember we turned out in force at his last public apprearance at the football match for his foundation. Apparently he lost the dressing room at Newcastle to the overpaid which most footballers are and young and naive players who he couldn't quite understand the mentality of has they have to much money these days. We won't hijack the occassion as want to be part of it so don't worry about it as we have only been given 1800 tickets anyway so surely can't make more noise than 25,000 of your fans. I think you will see both sets of fans applauding a great man unless they all think like some people on this blog.

2-0 to us by the way. Enjoy the game pity about your choice of manager though

i think every ipswich fan who cared about sir bobby should be there, he was a great man who did wonders for this club. As a memorial match i think a draw wuld be the farest result, and not a bad one at that, although i can see us pushing for a win. If all 27,000 of us there get behind the team it should be a special day. RIP sir bobby - true legend

Yes it should be a tribute to the 2nd greatest manager that we have ever had.
However is it being hijacked by the present owners to cover our dismal season?
Why no sir Alf Ramsey stand????

i also agree that we desperately need our crowd noise levels rising, as well as our attendances. i think the twelfth man is underestimated greatly. how are we going to show that we really want IT if we are as quiet and empty as usual? its time to massively get behind the team that we want to see in the premier league as quick as possible and pay tribute to Sir Bobby by bringing his zombies back to life this season.

Totally agree with comments by Campo that it would be nice if Newcastle fans could buy any spare seats to fill the ground to honour the life of Sir Bobby. I guess the police wont allow it but it would be nice. Saturday is the time for everyone to show their appreciation of the great man and then get behind their teams for(hopefully)an exciting match played in the sporting way Sir Bobby loved. No negativity, no booing, no moaning at players just a wall of noise and support. There is only ONE Bobby Robson

WELCOME TO ALL GEORDIES on Saturday !

Please may we ALL UNITE for this one day to commerate this Great man Sir Bobby Robson, that has had such an impact on so many lives.

Id be happy to sawp my shirt with a Newcastle fan, in the acknowledgment that we have a common cause to celebrate Bobby's life.

To all Town and Geordie fans - just for once lets focus on whats' good in English football - the PASSION that was surely personified by Sir Bobby Robson.

So lets sing HIS name on Saturday - raise the ferkin roof, and although Town desperately need the points, Id go so far as to say "sod the points", lets pay homage to the Man !

Unfortunately I was only a 1 when town one the fa cup, my dad was the lucky one that had the pleasure of seeing a truly great team play managed by a true legend in sir bobby, some of exp and games he saw back then do make feel very jealous
Saturday will be a day when we can celebrate this gentleman for what he did for town and football in general
I have been like a kid in sweet shop all week, really looking forward to this game, its just a shame that the ground can't be this full for every game,
I really do have a feeling that we will get a result on saturday, there should be no need to motivate the players for this one, they should just be able to hear us from the dressing room
The game should be a sell out with town fans not sending more tickets to toon bit us,
Its all very well when we were in prem and sold out all week where are all them now, no where
Apart from watching man city on sky in there big fat armchairs which has a remote holder and a beer in a foam holder to keep cool

Sorry to rant but I get hacked with some town fans for only turning out at big games, look at derby 32 thousand week in week out as an example

BBC HD - don't be silly, the game has been pushed off HD and off BBC1 because of pseudo celebrity sequin rattling on BBC1 up against trash-factor on ITV1.
