Keane Targeting Two Loan Signings
Keane Targeting Two Loan Signings
Monday, 28th Sep 2009 10:57

Boss Roy Keane says Town have two loan targets they are hoping to bring to the club before Saturday’s game at Barnsley. Keane is understood to have been involved in a meeting at the club yesterday which presumably also included owner Marcus Evans, who attended Saturday’s game against Newcastle.

The Town manager says he is getting closer to adding to his squad and hinted that one of the additions is likely to be a centre-half, with Alex Bruce likely to be out of action for up to a fortnight with a groin injury: “Maybe this week. There’s been a little bit of progress over the last 24 hours. We’re trying. It’s a touch closer.

“I’ve got two targets in mind and we’re working very hard and there’s a bit to go yet on the negotiations.”

Keane admits that there have been one or two setbacks as he has sought to add to his options: “We’ve hit one or two brick walls, but I think there has been progress over the last 24 hours, however, there’s still a bit of work to be done over the next few days. Nothing will happen before tomorrow night but by the weekend I’m a bit more hopeful.

“I’ve been saying for the last couple of months, there are one or two areas of the club I think we need improving. It’s very good talking about the problems have in certain areas, in terms of defending, particularly set pieces, but we need to talk about the solution and get one or two players in.

“Trust me, it’s easier said than done. I could draw you up a list of players, but it’s trying to get the ones we think will help improve us.”

The Blues boss dismissed weekend newspaper claims that talks have been ongoing with Sol Campbell since last week, but again failed to rule out a move for the former England man: “No, not that I’m aware of. I mentioned him [on Friday] because I was asked a question about him. Am I interested? We’re interested in all good players.”

Keane says he is well aware that there will have to be an upturn in form sooner rather than later: “The bottom line is, if results don't improve there will be changes. I'll be losing my job if results don't improve.”

While Alex Bruce is definitely out of Tuesday’s game at Bramall Lane, Gareth McAuley trained yesterday and will be involved in a light session today and could be available, havin missed out at the weekend due to a calf injury. David Wright and youngster Troy Brown are also expected to travel to South Yorkshire.

Striker Connor Wickham will remain behind after suffering with a groin injury in recent weeks.

wright shouldn't be out of favour, he's a top class championship defender, he's our best since in my mind harding. and ever since de vos left, we haven't had a good strong central defender we lack someone like him

It will probably be a long time before RK is gone.

He will be able to run a football club for a substantial amount of time.

He has man management skills. He does speak to his players and backroom staff which is normal.

He may or may not win a few games in next week or so. Let's hope for the latter.

He will not walk away, so no need to blame anybody.

The Truth-Fair play to you mate, ive been checking this story all day, and for all the sense you talk, other morons keep on coming back with crap arguements and you keep making them sound even more stupid!!! (If possible..)

IMO saturday was dissmal, no doubting it, but to get rid of Keane now would pretty much confirm relegation now. Now I know what your all going to say 'Stick with Keane and we'll defo be relegated!' but Keane's got his players now who obviously have to gel and bringing another manager in who probably wants different players would just be a a waste of the last 3 months and let's be fair, Leadbitter and Edwards wouldn't have come here if the story's about his temper, man managment blah blah blah were true. Think there's a few people who have read Yorke's bull in the paper and instantly thought 'oh, how disgraceful!' not actually thinking that all Yorke's trying to do is cash in on big names.

I will be greatful with a point tomorrow nite but then look at octobers fixture's. Out of 15 points there's a good 12 to pick up which could really build on our season.

No doubt i'll get slated for these comments but unfortunatly this will be from prats who seem to have a vendetor against our club doing well.

Sensable talkers like the truth, dobbie73 and so on get to work!!

Well said Mr Bluewein. People also forgot that the two performances against Notts F. and Doncaster were not bad, in contrast to the last one. Am afraid some do have a vendetta against RK.

The Truth - I wish all fans thought as rationally as you!

It's very unlikely Jim's team would have got us to the prem but if by some fluke they did they wouldn't have lasted. Keane is trying to build a team that will get promoted and have a chance of staying up and he has been given 2 YEARS to do this not 2 months!

Things were bound to get worse before they got better considering the overhaul Keane has had to make but they will get better given time, patience and SUPPORT!

Keane has made mistakes, I won't deny that. He shouldn't have said he was happy with the current CBs and he's not looking for further additions and he was wrong to think the squad he inherited wouldn't need many changes. Hopefully he can get in the CB (s) he wants and have a settled side from now until the end of the season. We might not get promoted but at least we can start next season with only minor changes needed.

Some fans think they helped get Magilton sacked and now want to do the same with Keane like some crazy power-trip. Take a step back and look at the wider picture, if we're still in the bottom three at christmas Keane should go but how can you judge him on 10 games, especially when we had a lot of hard games when we were low on confidence and just getting used to playing together.

Oh and for those of you that argue Blackpool beat Newcastle with hard work, do you really think the Newcastle players wanted to play at Bloomfield Road on a Weds night? NO!

But then they come to a nice packed stadium with a good atmosphere (for once!) and a perfect pitch and they play alot better, what a suprise!

Our squad may not be the best in the Championship but its certainly not the worst.
At the moment we lack direction and organisation, things that could and should be dealt with on the training ground by any decent Coach.
Every time I hear Keane his solution is getting yet more players.
He should talk more about working with the group that he has- unless of course he isn't any good at that!!

The problem is everyone had high (probably unrealistic) hopes of what we would achieve this season. Now that things are going so poorly some people are naturally calling for the managers head, that's football. Keane must be given time, yes but how much? We're nine games without a win, what happens if we go another? I would then say you have to admit that the manager isn't working out and has to go. However I'm not calling for him to be sacked, let him get in whoever theses two loan signings are and hopefully things will soon pick up. I think once the first win comes along then many more will. I want Keane to do well, I supported his appointment and still do but a time has to come when a decision has to be made for the best, I for one am hoping that it soesn't come to that and that Roy will achieve what he came here to do.

The question is if this was later in the season and we had started well and were now in a 9 match run without a win what would people be saying? Can't see all the Keane out's then.

Lets not turn into QPR by sacking people every five minutes.
Give Keane a bloody chance for gods sake!
We have played the top three teams so far.
Lets see how we fair in October, (some normal games)

We may all have unrealistic expectations but wh is that?

JM had a mediocre team that consistently made mid table. He was sacked because ME demanded Premiership football.

We were told, by all at the club, that RK was the man to do it and he would be given two seasons. RK himslef said why not do it in one!

My expectation was that under RK the team was going to move forward. He came here and announced that he had a good squad of players, but all he has done is ripped them apart and told them they are no good.

If he had come here and said that this was a poor team punching above its weight and it was going to be a long haul, he would still have my backing. Instead he promised glory days but all he has delivered is a squad of individuals that are too scared to make a mistake for the fear of never playing for him again.

bluewein you're spot on mate-by the way, where is Dobbie-has he been kidnapped to ensure his silence?

The biggest problem is that now the circus has really started in the media-the kicking RK got off the hacks on Sky on Sunday morning was pretty comprehensive, and you just have to look at some of the comments on here and from Radio Suffolk etc.-what worries me is that it has already gone too far. If we lose tomorrow, and let's face it it's likely, it will kick off again that's for sure, when we've got Barnsley, Plymouth and Swansea around the corner. If we come out of October in the bottom three then I'll be worried, but with approximately 10 points between relegation and playoffs at the moment I can't see it.

Changing managers at the moment is surely crazy. Come On You Blues.

I dont want to see RK leave I want the blues to get promoted playing good passing football like we want

At the end of the day the manager stands over his decisions which I admire

But Truth be told that his comments are all over the place -

He set out his stall and said 2 years for promotion..i wont post again till his contract is up

This is my first post on this site. How many of you negative posters were actually at Saturday's game??? Up until Newcastle scored the match was evenly balanced and if, a big if, Town had scored first, the result may well have been entirely different. As a long standing Town supported, I was at the Cup Final with my son all those years ago.

To those of you calling for Keane to go at this early stage, think back, if you are old enough to the 'Legends' time at PR when the same calls were being mad for his departure. None of the celebrations of his life might have happened if the Cobbolds had have listened to those voices. It is a bloody good job that no Internet existed then to allow these so called 'supporters' to get such a good platform for their misguided views. What ever your opinion of Roy Keane, he is the current Manager of ITFC and deserves and should get the support of all genuine supporters.

heard the saying, 'if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it'? Were we really that bad? No. Ok, few people had to go, few had to come in but I don't like Keane's style. Certain players no longer look happy. There is a real lack of passion on the pitch and you have to look at Roy Keane. No good keep bringing in new faces, be it long term or loan. We have some good players, work on them, get the team to gel. Bringing more in just makes a bigger squad, more rotation and that is not a good thing!

The challenge comes now to the men in blue,
The supporters, ground staff and manager too.
For bad defending has got us in the mire,
And goals we need to take us higher.
Have heard so much and for so long,
That we want him out the manager gone.
Since Burley came and Royle went,
Mowberry, Magilton and millions spent.
We want to see our youth shine through
And raise the roof chanting blue!
But what we want more than most
Is Town shine on from Robsons ghost.
Show us your passion starting tomorrow,
Clean sheets will come and goals will follow.
Tie up your boots, wear the Punch with pride.
We love you Ipswich you are our side!

Like many others i was embarrased to be an Ipswich town supporter on Saturday night. But after reading certain people's posts tonight i'm even more embarrased!

Yes it has been a very poor start but it does not justify some of the personal remarks about Keane.

We as a football club and as supporters are much better than this. It has only been nine games and i'm not holding out for much better tomorrow.

However, we have three very important games coming up that could easily pull us clear of trouble.

All of this negativity will not help anything neither will a change of manager at this stage.

As has been said many time before lets get behind the team and Keano get this seaoson rolling!

I can see Danny Welbeck being the perfect loan signing, and it is also very possible. Keano has his contacts in United, Welbeck is one of Fergasons best young players who isnt playing at United at the moment, so it would be a perfect challange for the youngster to come to Ipswich and prove himself as a week in, week out goalscorer.

Aswell as Welbeck i would love to see Campbell at Portman road, although he wouldnt come until Janurary he would definatly secure the defence, he may not be the quickest player but he is a leader, and will head the ball whenever he can, he will also bring experience to the defence and tutor the younger players, Smith, Pim and Brown.

And perhaps more unrealisticly, Gio and Dyer. Get these players in and watch us fly up the table.

Fantastic tributes to Sir Bobby on saturday, it was a great occasion. And as a minor positive from the match I thought we looked good up until their first, and Trotter had a decent first half.

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those that think RK is not getting the support he deserves from the crowd and supporters, I actually think the crowds at P Rd on match days have been pretty supportive during the game given the desperately clueless and embarrassing fare on offer. Its only on here that most vent their spleen and that's because they have good reason to be fearful of what we have become in suchg a short space of time.

Its one thing to make a (strong) point that sacking RK gets us nowhere and he needs more time but - The Truth and others - to abuse those who criticise the judgement and leadership of the man as "prawn eating Britannia standers" pig ignorantly undermines the strength of that argument. Even if you think that we have to soldier on with him, there is a mounting and powerfully objective wall of evidence that says he has terribly flawed judgement of players we need and can get rid of, has no clear system or shape he wants us to play to , has chopped and changed the formation way more than JM ever got villified for , raised expectations unwisely to the roof and made other embarrassingly silly comments to the press ("they'll never play for me again" ; "any half decent manager can get to mid table in this league etc") and has fundamentally failed to address key weaaknesses of the team. Those that still trust in him have little in their locker other than ...er, I don't know actually - is it just hope? Gut feel? I mean what else can you point to that says this guy can dig us out of the mess he has created?

There is no dodging - and to be fair, he's not trying to dodge it - accountability for our worst ever start in professional history. He was bequeathed a golden legacy of a generous owner and an adoring crowd and has singled handedly destroyed it with his own inadequacy. No one in this business - and again , he himself accepts this - can expect to be given time if the humiliation and embarrassment that we have squirmished through nearly 20 % of the season (not just Saturday) is sustained.

I'm not sure where marcus sits or what he eats but you can bet your bottom dollar that he will be deeply concerned about the state of his business and his investment. I give our man the next 5 games, no longer.

many differing views on here today. For me getting rid of Keano now would be rash and would lead to further problems. think his last 3 signings are good with only Healy and Delaney looking dodgy at present. i think the hype has got to everyone and i think a lot of the pre-keane players are now out of their comfortzone and fear they are not good enough to take the team where the management want them to go. i dont think they are scared of keane, i think they are scared of not being good enough and scared of crowd reaction everytime they make a mistake. he needs to be given time to build his team once we get a win the confidence will flow as will the results of that im sure.... as for blowing jims team apart...the players released in the summer were going to be released by jim anyway whilst Shumi, Haynes and Rhodes werent in his side anyway, garvan just isnt good enough and D.Wright was also not believed in by Jim as he got in Simpson then Volz on loan

Hi La_Paz - no not kidnapped! I started typing out a post several times today but found it hard to tell the ever-vociferous anti-Keanites to shut up for a minute, yet I was unable to offer any positive gloss or spin on the situation! Many people (both pro- and anti-Keane) have posted on TWTD today, many of whom give good arguments and make good points. And then there is also a lot of dross which is downright depressing.

I dunno where we go from here, and like many others I feel that tomorrow night against the Blades is almost a write-off, which is a horrible feeling to have. I think that whatever happens tomorrow night, October is absolutely key for our manager and our club - Barnsley and Plymouth at the very least are winnable and MUST-WIN games - they are down in the mire with us. Watford and Swansea are tougher prospects but we should still be able to get at least a point from each.

On the positive side .... we ARE still improving, albeit very slowly and in a stuttering way. Despite the horror show against Newcastle, we played OK up until the first goal, but once we conceded the heads dropped, and like any good side, Newcastle stuck the knife in and got their second. That was the killer goal, we collapsed and number 3 went in.

Like some have said, we have now played the top 3 teams, and after tomorrow night, we will have played what I consider to be the best 4 teams in this division. What it does show is that we are a helluva long way from Premiership quality, even play-off quality. A lot of that is down to confidence however, not so much from a lack of genuine skill in the side. Look back to Cov City on the first day - how good were we over much of that game? Yet we were defeated, probably unjustly. Sadly too we lost Norris, an absolutely vital player, and it wasn't until Leadbitter came in that we got a decent replacement. Forget Garvan - good as he was a few years back, he is not the player he was.

Although a Keane-believer/fan/supporter, I do have to question his insistence in playing Trotter over Quinn. No disrespect to the big lad, but I feel that Quinn is a better battler, and that is what we need at the moment. Likewise Walters is runing his socks off, Rosenior and Edwards are striking up a decent right-wing understanding, and Jaime Peters is starting to show just why he was worth chasing a few years ago. There is quality in teh side, just a bit disjointed at the moment.

But I also have to question Keane's refusal to play David Wright - a big mystery that one! Last season he was one of our better defenders, stepping into Wilnis' shoes. I'd like to see him come in at LB, and even try Delaney in the centre with either McAuley or Bruce. Balkestein I WAS a fan of, and still appreciate his gutsiness, but he is too young and inexperienced and makes too many mistakes.
And with Wright at LB, that would free up Peters to play left-wing as an alternative to Martin, or even as a roving attacking midfielder - free to cause havoc in the opposition half.

Up front ..... well, I believe we have the quality to get goals, but it has to be from good midfield service in a 4-4-2. There is a place for 4-5-1, but I'm not sure any of our strikers have the nous to play alone - they are better in pairs. Some bemoan the fact that we sold Rhodes ... move on, get over it. He is gone! He never made the grade here (OK, maybe he didn't get enough chances, I dunno), but he is GONE. There may also have been stuff in the background that we don't know about. Priskin is a decent player that given the right service he WILL get goals. Wickham will also add another dimension when he is fit again. He could be like Kuqi, but younger and probably more skillful (sorry, Shefki!) - bags of energy, bags of strength, and a huge physical presence.

So where next? I saw that as soon as Keane mentioned loan players, the daggers were instantly out - they will be the wrong players, Keane doesn't knwo what he's doing, can we replace the manager etc etc blah di bloody blah. Much seems to be being made of the fact that Keane has said that the squad is good enough, but then it isn't, so he wants more players etc etc. For what its worth, I would rather he reassessed the situation and if he wants more players, then bloody do it! Maybe 2 weeks ago he felt that the squad WAS good enough, now he has had to rethink. Better to reassess and react to changing circumstances than to say no and refuse to contemplate any changes, surely. If there is an issue with additional players, its that it complicates the selection of a first XI further, maybe making a settled side more diffcult. But as a qualified and relatively experienced football manager, I would hope that Keane has the intelligence to identify the weak areas, and pinpoint the EXACT player characteristics he needs to fit in and get those players accordingly.

I agree with some that the 'give him time' mantra is starting to wear a bit thin ... or is it? If we were to get rid of Keano now, we would have to go through all this upheaval all over again (twice in one season), and then you might as well start planning for League One because no team can survive that much disruption in such a short time. Horrible as it may seem, we may get relegated whatever happens - that is a hard truth, and nobody is too big to go down. Just ask Leeds, Southampton, Charlton and the feathered lot from up the A140. With a new manager it is almost certain that we would go, but with Keano I believe we stand a better chance of escaping it and building for a (hopefully) strong challenge on promotion next season. We are 'work in progress' at the moment - maybe a building site - but change our manager now and we will become a bombsite!

Yes, Keano has made mistakes (some odd signings, inadvisable press comments) but he is human and he is on a learning curve. If anyone out there thinks they can do a better job then they are welcome to try. Until then, despite a crappy season so far, I will support Keano in his position as Ipswich Town manager, because this journey is only just beginning.

Well said as always Dobbie! To change manager now is suicidal! I have made my comments in favour of Keane earlier now i just wish he would decide on his best XI and stick with it for next 6 games. Come the end of October we will have more idea of where the team is going. My hope is all ITFC supporters, which after all is what we all have in common, gets behind the team now and helps get us out of this bad run. Up the town!
