Haynes Hoping for Good Reception
Haynes Hoping for Good Reception
Friday, 4th Dec 2009 07:36

Former Town striker Danny Haynes says he expects to get a good reception from his old fans when the Blues travel to face his new club Bristol City on Saturday. Haynes joined the Robins in the summer in a £400,000 move.

The 21-year-old frontman says he bears no ill-will towards Town or their supporters: "I had a good relationship with the Ipswich fans and I'd like to think I'll get a good reception.

"I have nothing but good memories of my time at Ipswich and I made a lot of friends there. I think every player looks forward to meeting his former club and I'm no different.

"Obviously, I'm a Bristol City player now and I want us to take the three points. But at the same time, it will be good to catch up with some of my old team-mates.

"I spent five years at Portman Road and they taught me the game and made me the person I am now.

"I came up from the youth team to the first team and they gave me my big break in the game. I cannot forget that."

Haynes says he didn’t spend long enough working with Roy Keane to make a judgement on his management, although he says he found him fine during their brief spell working together: "Roy Keane only arrived at the end of the season and he wasn't really there long enough before I left for me to get to know him properly.

"But given the little I saw of him, I thought he was OK. I know he has this reputation for ruffling feathers and upsetting people, but I didn't have a problem with him."

Meanwhile, Bristol City boss Gary Johnson says that there’s no rift between him and Keane despite the Town manager telling him he should mind his own business in the summer when both clubs were chasing Lee Martin’s signature from Manchester United: "He didn't need to say what he said, because he had hold of the wrong end of the stick.

"We made an offer for Lee Martin with Sir Alex Ferguson's blessing and everyone knew that. But the lad had worked with Roy Keane at Old Trafford as a young lad, decided he wanted to join Ipswich and that was fair enough.

"I was asked whether Lee was coming here to Bristol City and I said 'no, he's going to Ipswich,' which was totally true.

"But we know Roy likes to chew wasps sometimes and he chose to respond in the manner he did.

"He came out and said it was none of my business when, in fact, it was my business at that time."

Johnson says he expects to meet up with the Blues boss after Saturday’s match: "I'm sure we'll shake hands after the game and, hopefully, he'll agree to come to my office for a drink.

"I don't have any real problem with Roy — I don't know him particularly well and so don't really like or dislike him.”

of course we should have got rid, he was terrible at times, looking as if he had no desire to play football, onl;y wanting the lifestyle that comes with it! - he wasn't a nice person either.. best off without him!

Flattered to deceive. He'll be remembered for the Naarich goals for a while - but then, I suspect, forgotten.

Now that I've said that, he'll probably bang in a brace against us!

gave 100%, but never quite consistent/good enough.

Shame Bristol didn't sign Martin though - is he £1.1m better than Haynes?

I'd rather we kept Haynes and they'd got Martin TBH.

Hoping for a good reception, eh? Is he getting married? Or is he talking about his TV?

He was good in bursts, but he always struck me as thinking he was better than he really was, with the upshot that he often made daft mistakes trying to look flashy and just not pulling it off. For all that, he was a loyal servant and I hope he does well at Bristol City - starting on Sunday, lol.

Haynes gave us some memorable games and moments ,and his flashness was probably due to his age .Thought the money was not enough for a 20 year old who will only get better with age and experience and we certainly paid way over the top for Martin who is a lot more incosistent without the highlights

Danny Haynes is a lot better than some of the players we have now. I just hope Keano doesn't mess with the team too much tomorrow and let them gel a bit more from the last game. COYB!

Anyone remember when West Ham were after Haynes about 2 years ago - figures of £2-3M were mentioned .
We said "Hands off our Danny !!"

Nobody took my advice at the time. Martin spent a while on loan at Sheff Utd and was absolutely crap, just like everywhere else he's been. Now we're paying for it, dearly!

i agree with most of the comments on here, id rather have Haynes than Martin, its just a pity Haynes didnt score enough goals because he has the ability to be a good player

Anyone who consistently scores against the scum is always going to be a town hero. He wasn't the greatest of players to grace our turf but done a job for the time, £400k is a good deal for both sides. But no doubt there will be a few boo boys.

Very good impact player but that was about it. Never really used the tremendous pace he had as he too often had no end product. I personally did not want him to go as he had time on his side. As for his replacement Martin - well he is the worst buy Roy Keane has made. No pace no strength - £1.5m totally and utterly wasted. I'd rather have Haynes at half pace than Martin.
