Town Linked With Swindon Striker
Town Linked With Swindon Striker

Town, Nottingham Forest and Derby are all being linked with a January move for Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin. The 20-year-old has netted seven goals in his first seven senior starts for the Robins after joining them from non-league in October.

Austin was with Reading’s youth set-up as a schoolboy but dropped out of the professional game, playing with Thatcham Town and hometown side Hungerford Town before joining Wessex League Premier Division club Poole Town last season.

The 6ft 2in tall striker scored a hugely impressive 46 goals in 46 starts and two sub appearances as the Dolphins won their league by 17 points and also picked up the Dorset Senior Cup.

In the summer, Austin spent time training with Bournemouth but was unable to join the League Two side due to their transfer embargo. Instead, he signed for Swindon until the end of the season for an undisclosed fee in early October, having already netted 18 goals in 11 appearances for Poole, who remained in the same division despite winning last season’s championship.

After four games as a sub, Austin, who previously worked in the building trade, has netted in all but one of his seven starts for Swindon, scoring twice in the 3-2 victory over Leyton Orient earlier this month.

Can anyone tell me what Ipswich has to offer that Leeds can't, enough to tempt Beckford into joining us? It not going to happen.

Philips is a natural goal scorer with a tremendous record, but could he last for 90 minutes? I somehow doubt it, he is the sort of player that its great to have on the bench because he could come on and turn the game. But I think we need someone we can play each match for the full 90.

Charlie does appear to be a good prospect. The only trouble is if he does come here and he fails to make the grade, it will be more ammo for the anti-RK brigade.

I scored a cheeky 4 goals in 7 minutes over the park the other day, sign me up, I must be prolific!!

He sounds like a good punt, sounds like a Kevin Phillips scenario! Having said that, is Mr Phillips available?? Love that man!

I agree with previous comments, we need to take some chances. We aren't going to be breaking the bank on these guys and we may find our next Stewart/Johnson. No one had heard of Johnno before Burley took a chance and he was a fantastic buy.

I say go for it if it's true, come on town up the table we go!!!

How about Beckford AND Phillips? 2 million for Beckford? That's ok. Phillips wouldn't cost a lot though. Too old to cost much, but very useful for a season.
