Murphy Hoping to Be Back for Southampton
Murphy Hoping to Be Back for Southampton
Wednesday, 13th Jan 2010 11:33

New goalkeeper Brian Murphy is targeting a return to the squad when the Blues face Southampton in the FA Cup at St Mary’s a week on Saturday. The Irishman injured ankle ligaments in the warm-up ahead of Sunday’s game at Leicester, the first time he had been in a Town squad since his free transfer move from Bohemians.

Murphy told the club site: "My initial worry was that I was going to be out for seven or eight weeks. Connor Wickham was set to shoot but pulled the ball back instead and as I tried to rebalance myself, my ankle went one way and my knee the other.

"It was very sore and I was frustrated and disappointed obviously. I would have liked to have got a few games under my belt at least before getting injured!

"Thankfully the scans have shown the ankle is not too bad and I'm looking at being out for 10 days or so, which is bad enough but a relief in a way.

"I want to get back into training as soon as possible and if all goes well, maybe I can make the Southampton game at the end of next week."

On Friday manager Roy Keane said he would like to see Murphy play a couple of reserve games before he comes into contention for a first team start.

What a lame excuse. Nothing againnst the guy but surely players with more experience that Connor are going to pull better tricks in real games. He also seems very sure of himself (which isn't a bad thing) that he will go straight in to the squad. Alan Lee-barret has been superb and fully deserves his place. Jury's out for me on this guy.

so you have never twisted an ankle, it does happen and it doesn't take much to do, the worst thing to do is come back to soon and aggravate it as it will never go away.

But I agree no point saying how it happened, its made him look weak! He could have at least said he twisted his ankle whilst being chased by Triggs across bent lane in a Simon Clegg military exercise.

A lame excuse? I think he was just explaining how it happened! Players can injure themselves in the most innocuous of circumstances! Also with regard to him being sure of himself, we don't know what Kean has said to him. We haven't been hearing conclusive reports of ALB staying in the number 1 spot (although I think he's done enough).

Lets hope he is right and be back for then and then ALB will have a tough time on his hands keeping the number 1 spot and hopefully make him a better player

this is assuming ALB gets re-signed seeing as his contract is up in a week and haven't heard anything about it being renewed

i suppose when Dave Beasent told everyone that he dropped a bottle of salad cream on his foot that was a "lame" excuse that makes him weak to......unreals comments on here the guy was just saying what happened and people are ripping him apart for "lame excuses" and being weak doesnt make any sense to me, im glad hes not out for as long as it could have been

I can't see why ALB wouldn't be signed up? Local boy, confident, commanding, fantastic reactions (Leicester game) It makes sense to keep him.

Hand it to Keano though, he is the master of tactics and mind f**ks. He'll probably wait until Saturdays game and announce it over the tannoys at PR that ALB has signed a 2 year deal - Give us fans some good news....

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

ALB has done well. However, maybe worth seeing what Murphy can do at Southampton? For me though, ALB should be No 1 for the remainder of the season.I doubt Wright will play for us again.
