Stead Close to Coventry Move
Stead Close to Coventry Move
Friday, 12th Feb 2010 09:02

Town striker Jon Stead is weighing up whether to join Coventry City on loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer. Stead, the Blues' joint top scorer along with Jon Walters with six, has been on the bench since the arrival of Daryl Murphy and David Healy earlier this month.

According to reports in the Midlands, Town gave Coventry permission to hold talks with Stead yesterday and the Sky Blues hope to have the deal completed in time for the 26-year-old to face QPR — for the second time in a few days - on Saturday.

Coventry boss Chris Coleman has already added West Ham’s Freddie Sears to his squad and says he is hopeful of landing his second striking target: “We’ve been working hard to get a striker in before Saturday but we are still working away hard to get one more in before the weekend.

“Everything is agreed with the club and it is just getting him to sign, so I don’t want to tempt fate but we are very optimistic.”

Stead joined the Blues from Sheffield United at the start of the 2008/09 season, initially on loan before Town paid the Blades a fee of £600,000.

A switch to Coventry may well suit Town and Stead with the player appearing unlikely to play too many games now that Murphy and Healy have signed on loan from Sunderland, while the Blues are looking to make savings on the wage bill as they target further loan additions.

Meanwhile, new Town loanee David Healy says he is enjoying his time with the Blues. Writing in his column in the Belfast Telegraph, Healy said: "Two games into my new career at Ipswich Town and I have to say I’m loving it.

"After sitting on the bench or in the stands for most of the season with Sunderland, it’s fantastic to feel part of things again at a football club.”

Poor control, for a man of his size he cant header, cant question his commitment as he does always put himself about but that im afraid isnt enough, nearly every club he's played for he's fallen down the pecking order after about a season probably due to the fact he doesnt get enough goals, i wish Steady all the best as i dont feel he would be here next season.

I agree ITFC1985, he isn't comfortable on the ball. Very poor ball control. OK, I accept that he scores some spectacular goals, but he has missed a few as well. Not an instinctive touch player, the sort we need more of.

Best of luck to him.

"Pablo should be sent out before Stead the trouble is no wants the lazy Spanish north stand idol "

i WOULD PREFER pABLO TO GO BUT he wants to stay here and see out his contract it seems , unfortunately.

As for the bloke who recons i should put my specs on re wickham, well you need to go to specsavers aswell. It wasnt him that made pablos goal against coventry with a brilliant pass, it was walters

I know he is very young etc but wickham has done absolutely NOTHING in the first team . Im not even sure he will make it as a footballer. Next Rooney , your having a giraffe

agree PimsNumber1 - apart from a couple of goals against Shrewsbury in the league cup Wickham has been very disappointing he obviously has potential but i fear he may have been exposed too soon, always looks off the pace.

Unfortunately for Stead i fear his days are numbered, for a big guy he doesnt win anything, and now we have Murphy who looks pretty good in the air and we have Walters, his control is often very poor and he cant hold the ball up, 1 thing Pablo does very well and Stead doesnt have pace, but thats been a problem 4 us all season, and lastly doesnt get enough goals, again has been a problem for the whole team but hopefuly Healy will be the man to get us some goals till the end of the season.

it was indeed Walters who made the pass to Counago to score the last gasp winner even though the commentary says Wickham

60 appearances - 17 goals. Not a brilliant return IMO. Must agree he's a 100% man, but bottom line he is highly paid and we need to offload. People bang on about getting rid of Pablo. Fine as long as someone wants him. The deal on the table is for Stead. The club have to make a financial decision and for me, Stead has had more poor games than good. Just my opinion.

Another example of the Manager not knowing his rear end from his elbow i.e
one day Priskin 'not going anywhere' - next day leaves the club - Stead talented player 'I must give him a consistent run in the team' - now likely to leave the club without that run ever happening. It goes on and on.
All symptomatic of this season as a whole, too much playing players out of position, changing team week after week - no continuity in anything whatsoever from start to finish. Doesn't that explain why we are where we are ? - and without doubt deserve to be.
Positive for you jas0999 - things can only get better !!!

Thinks it will be a shame if he goes as he does seems to be more of a goal threat than Pablo, Priskin, Walters or Wickham right now. If Murphy or Healy get injured or lose form then we would be very light upfront.
However if Keano has a better replacement lined up then i would be happier.
Be interesting to see what happens

Agree with jas0999, that ratio is more like what Simon Milton used to score for Town is his prime 1 in 4.
Stead does alot of running and pressurising the opposition but lacks the ability to jump and head the ball or control the ball that well. Has a powerful shot on him but too often chooses this above a pass to a another player in a better position. Agree that strikers having a little greed isn't a bad thing but its knowing when a pass is better or a shot.
Counago's game is different to Stead, he doesn't chase the ball down as much as Stead (although he has done more of late). He has alot of skill around the box and can skip past one or two defenders to put a pass or shot in. He has a great vision/awareness of who is aroung him and can put some great weighted passes in. Should be scoring more goals, particularly at this level and maybe a run in the team with the new guys will help?
As has already been mentioned, turned down a move at the start of the season perhaps wages perhaps happy to play for Town? The current request is for Stead anf if Murphy, Healy, Pablo are ahead of him is he needed as much (especially if Priskin gets into form at QPR and comes back next season)?
Good luck Jon if you do move.

Ray Crawford knew his stuff as a striker - and proved it - ask his opinion on Stead.
Given service he will score goals - as indeed most decent strikers would - but what service have any of our strikers had this season ?? - mostly one up front ploughing lone furrows week after week.

Really concerns me as to what we will have left at this club after all the loanees return at the end of the season ........................................... or will start next with.
Sorry positives - but this season has, so far, been a stinker - if you're honest you must think the same.;

Any 'Trueblue' and I mean 'Trueblue' must be concerned about our club and it's current state of play - I certainly am.

Good job a lot of you morons are not managing the club. RK knows what he is doing so if he is happy to let Stead go so be it.

a lot of people are talking as if Pablo is favoured and will be staying... he should and will be off eventually (unless he suddenly turns into Wayne Rooney) along with Lisbie.
Leaving us with Priskin Walters Wickham for next year Murphy/Healy if 1 or both stay.....
If they don't or they are not Keane's main targets for perma. signings then there is this magical thing b4 the next season starts called the transfer window which is nice to be prepared for, if the players he doesn't want in the squad already have deals in place and are gone then all he has to concentrate on is getting the new target/targets knowing exactly what wages/money he can offer.

Another one impressed by the name only.

Surprised and disappointed! Having said that, if this is true, I'm sure there's a plan and some proper thinking behind this agreement. We would certainly need to bring someone else in as an injury or two up front would cause us big problems. Good luck Jon if you agree to a move. Who knows how the season would have panned out for Jon had it not been for the ridiculous red and 4-game ban.

There are obviously people posting on here who are sensible, logical thinking people who understand football, and what is being presented to them by the Club, Manager, and indeed Team. Others just haven't a clue and are completely blinded by a name.
As a supporter of 40+ years I have never been so despondent during that time as I am now. The possibility of losing Stead at a time when we have a relegation battle on our hands, leaving us with only Counago and Wickham as cover for Murphy and Healy, really finishes it for me as it defies logical thinking.
To this end this will be my last post - as I really cannot be bothered to be concerned anymore - I suspect there may be others thinking likewise.

I dont think dear old Steady can do the job for us ultimately; but in the short term, I think i'd prefer him to stay put and lend out Pabs, or dare i say it, Wickham..
I feel we're a little light up front - it would want to be on an instant return clause ideally.

Otherwise, it could mean there is someone good coming in?

Conscientious professional, our Stead. Like the boy. Perhaps not cut throat enough. He should try being an asshole for a while. Bet he'd improve as a player.

I just don't get it..... he's a half decent striker.

Loan out pablo instead, yes he's got good technical ability but he's not half the goal threat that stead is.

blue_floyd added 22:20 - Feb 12
If this is true, it's another bad decision by Keane. It will also leave us short up front, unless he's got someone else coming in. Even if he has, I'd rather we got rid of Pablo.

keanes never known what he's doing hence one of the biggest if not the biggest form reversals in the clubs history over a very short time

KEANE YOU BUMDER!!

Stead is our joint leading goal scorer, works hard, will score goals when played as a STRIKER!! and given a decent run. As proved before the regrettable incident involving a red card.

Counago goes off the boil more than my morning eggs. Murphy is only here till the end of the season, as is Healy, but is certainly more Proton than Ferrari at the moment, Wickham is too young, Walters is better on the wing.

I support Ipswich, so I support whatever manager is in charge of my club. But Keane is certainly becoming harder for me to stand by due to his stupid decisions.

I had hoped to be watching a play off dog fight, not a relegation battle.
