Stead Poised to Join Coventry

Striker Jon Stead’s loan move to Coventry is back on and is expected to go through later this afternoon. The 26-year-old was understood to have rejected the switch last week, but Coventry came back in for the former Sheffield United man early this morning and Stead is currently at the Ricoh Arena to sign on the dotted line.

The move can only be for a maximum 93 days which would take the former England U21 international to end of the season proper but not the play-off final if the Sky Blues are involved.

Earlier today, manager Roy Keane expected Stead to be in his squad for Tuesday’s game at Peterborough having been at training on Sunday, but Coventry boss Chris Coleman subsequently made another move for the striker.

Keane confirmed reports that Stead’s wife is currently pregnant but didn’t think that would have a bearing on the move: “I wouldn’t have thought so, not if it’s a loan deal, but you’ll have to ask Steady that. I’m aware she’s pregnant.

“I don’t know if that comes into a player’s mindset, I know it wouldn’t come into mine, but some players are different.”

According to a report, the clubs have agreed a £500,000 fee for the deal to be made permanent in the summer. Stead, who joined the Blues from Sheffield United for £600,000 in August 2008, is contracted to Town until June 2011.

Meanwhile, Keane refused to comment on reports that he had made a move for Cardiff City left-back Mark Kennedy: “We make enquires for lots of players and we get different feedback and I wouldn’t comment on certain individuals, certainly not.”

The Blues boss says there has been no progress on bringing in any further loan additions: “It’s been very, very quiet. As I’ve said, with the number of players we have, if I really can’t get in a player that I think will improve us, then I won’t be doing any business.

“But that changes on a day-to-day basis. Overall, in terms of the numbers we have, I’m fairly pleased.”

Connor Wickham and Lee Martin are both over their injuries and will come into contention for Tuesday’s squad.

Surco you have actually gone insane
as bad as pabs is even he has a better scoring record than stead over his career as a start.
try doing a bit of research before such comments.
the most stead has scored is his 16 for us last season and 22 in 68 app for hudersfield where he started.
he got 8 in 42 for blackburn
2 in 35 for sunderland

Blueknight as always you have not let me down ,let me explain how it works you add up the appearances and divide by the goals-

Jon Stead - games 262 goals 61 = 4.2
Pablo Counago - games 303 goals = 4.4
Jon Walters - games 245 goals = 5
Daryl Murphy - games 116 goals = 7.2
David Healy - 324 games 79 goals = 4.1

I admit Healys record is slightly better but his goals were scored between 2001 and 2005 over 5 years ago .
I would ask you to do your research before commenting on others then you wouldnt look like such a plank

Incredible decision.

Where would we have been in the table if Stead hadn't scored in all the games before that ludicrous ban?

I can understand with Healy and particularly with the very promising start by Murphy, that Stead may have slid down the pecking order, but what if Healy/Murphy both end up injured? It isn't an impossible situation, then Stead would have been top choice as striker.

As much as I love Jon Walters, and he does his best up front bless him, but is better on the wing, and I do like Connor Wickham - but he is nowhere near ready to be relied upon considering where we are in the table. As others have pointed out, if we were in the top 6, we maybe could chance him tonight - but we ARE NOT, and need our strongest team tonight.

Yes - Peterboro are crud, but it isn't an automatic given that we will win 5-0 just because they are bottom of the table. When WE were bottom, did opposing teams deliberately put out weakened sides as they thought we would be useless and just roll over for them - NO!
