Stead Loan Move Confirmed
Stead Loan Move Confirmed
Monday, 15th Feb 2010 15:58

Coventry City have confirmed that striker Jon Stead has moved to the Ricoh Arena on loan until May with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman said: "We've tried a couple of times to get Jon. He has all the attributes to be a very good player for Coventry City and we have worked really hard to get him here.

"We have agreed terms with Jon and it will initially be a loan deal but we will look to make it permanent in the summer because we would like Jon to be here long term.

"Hopefully it's further evidence of what we are trying to achieve and will be another exciting signing for our supporters."

The clubs have agreed a £500,000 fee, according to a report earlier today, although there is no confirmation that such an agreement is in place.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Blues from Sheffield United in the summer of 2008, is contracted to Town until June 2011.

Glad the donkey's gone at last. Never good enough to be an ITFC player. Typical Magilton crap signing.

im happy for keane to stay i can see what he is doing and understand that the amount of changes have held us back this year and think alot of things and 1 or 2 underachieving players will come to fruition next year.
But i have just read the story about Sven on sky sports about how he considers all offers now that he is looking to get back into management i would sack keane now if i could get Sven :D

Bit of shame, i like Steady. Agree with cbower though time will tell on this one for Keane.
On the surface of seems a bit odd but i would add we don't know what is happening behind closed doors as to who is coming in if anyone. I would be highly surprised if(although delighted), like some have suggested, it was the likes of a Chopra i think that is highly unrealistic!
I also agree with the posters who mentioned that the midfield should be popping up with there fair share of goals. Murphy has looked good so far but he won't score every game as even the Rooneys of the world can't do that and i'm sure Healy will come good aswell but if they are'nt scoring where will the goals come from?

I would rather we had kept him. He was becoming more dependable than Pablo and showed more effort. I am hoping Healey and Murphy do the bizz but had seen Stead as reasonable backup to be used as and when necessary. I understand though that Keane is looking at the bigger picture and that we are currently in a state of flux. Maybe he does have a replacement in mind for this window.

Sad to see him go, those who didnt rate his contribution here know nothing about football, 18 goals in 39 starts is very good by anyones standards. I usually back Keane but fear he may have got this one wrong, I hope over the rest of the season it proves a wiser decision than it appears right now.

and that appearance stat could have kept going up with the goal stat staying the same.
stats are good for one thing only and that's a measure of the past.
He done ok for us last year but is not good enough to be on high wages when he is only good enough to be on the bench for a serious promotion chasing team which is what we hope to be.

In my humble opinion, we have released a player incapable of pushing for playoffs in this league, and a footballer who is a country mile from being capable of taking us to the premiership.

In so doing, we have demonstrated our ambition as a club. We wont go down, we don't want play-offs. The rest of the season is avoiding relegation and building carefully so we hit the ground running next season.

Murph and Healy for me have ingredients Steady could only dream of. He probably watched them in training and thought, that's me finished.

At best, Steady will plod through his career, barely making double figures in any season, grateful to any club prepared to give him a Championship contract. Quite simply, he isn't good enough. If Jon Stead is the 'best' striker at your club, you are indeed in danger of relegation.

How on earth people defend him as 'our top scorer' beggars belief! Promotion contending clubs need prolific strikers. He will not ever be prolific, at any club. Think bigger and think longer. That's what RK+co do.

Nice lad, Steady. Just not very good.

All the best to him. I think RK is right and is shaping his side - lets face it, whatever folks think, Roy has been with half a season - he needs and will be given the chance to shape a side. Yes, he swaps and changes, but that to me is designed to counter attack and meet the challenges of the oposition. He has his strikers now - and I think he's realised that Pablo can actually play football. Yes, books need to be balanced - agreed and a fact of life I'm afraid. We all know that Martin, Priskin and maybe Edwards haven't been successful. But he isn't the first manager to make errors and he won't be the last.

With Murphy (both), Healy gaining match sharpness, Wickham fit, Walters playing well and maybe a left back / winger coming in, things are looking up. Managers need time = look at Fergie (no, not Bobby).

Good look Steady - I hope you find a club and a system that allows you to shine - but not at our expense.

People go on about 18 goals in 38 starts etc etc. They fail to take into account that sStead scored a few as a sub. Surely you should also therefore take into account his sub appearances? I think it's actually 17 in 60 appearances. Not so good is it?

Sad to see the Stead man go. Our loss is their gain.

Good luck Steady, hope it all goes well for you.

If you listen very carefully, you can hear the sound of Roy Keane losing his marbles. Absolutely ridiculous decision. Pablo's past his best and Wickham is not quite ready for the step-up IMO. We now have no half decent striker as a back up to Murphy & Healy, who, let's not forget, are only here on loan. I think I'll start keeping an eye open for the emergence of the grey hair on Keane's chin.

if keane had the same strike rate as stead we'd be 11-12 points better off and challenging for the playoffs.. its keane we should be offloading

If he is on high wages, I can accept letting him go as as a few people have mentioned, he will likely be on the bench the next few games. I hope we have a 24 hour recall on the loan though as we may need him in the event of Murphy getting injured/ Healy not regaining form or fitness/ Counago not being a threat etc. I don't take issue with those who have no problem with him leaving the club as thats a very subjective thing, I do take issue with those who seem to imply he's been some sort of disaster for the club which is well over the top. If people want to take into account sub appearances then his total league & cup record still stands at 19 in 62, nearly 1 on 3 which is still very decent. If stats mean nothing then Pablo would be in the team every week because he 'looks good' but you need some barometer of goal threat. Filippo Inzaghi often looks like he's never stepped on a football pitch before but that doesn't seem to have held him back through his career. People also need to realise that those of us defending Stead aren't all holding him up as the best striker at the club. I just personally think he is a decent player who hasn't been helped by a nomadic career, but who would make a decent contribution as one of 4 frontline strikers at the club but if he is on the high wages some suggest, I can also understand people's argument in letting him go.

ChambersM ,Why are you already critising Healy when he has just moved from the north and has only two games?I think when Healy is settled he could be a 20 goal aseason striker

Healy hasnt scored regularly since 2004 ,why do you think he will get us more goals than someone who has scored 18 in the championship in the last year ?

murphy hadnt scored for over two years before he signed for us, now hes got 2 in 2. these are good players. you cant expect them to have an amazing scoring record, playing inconsistently and at a higher level. stats can be very misleading, i like to inform my opinions on players based on having seen them play!
