Walters: We've Not Been Good Enough
Walters: We've Not Been Good Enough
Thursday, 25th Feb 2010 18:39

Skipper Jon Walters has admitted that the Town squad have underperformed this season. Walters says the league table doesn’t lie and that the Blues deserve to be in the lower reaches of the division.

Walters told the club site: "We can't hide from the fact that it's been a thoroughly disappointing season so far. We've not been good enough, simple as that. The table tells the story. We are where we deserve to be.

"We've got good enough players to be doing far better but we have not matched the expectations. When the manager came in, those expectations shot through the roof and maybe some players thought that would be it, we would just turn up and go up because of the manager, but it doesn't work like that.

"Maybe mentally it's been a problem for us this season. When you look at the players here, we have got a good squad yet we have underperformed.

"We have worked hard on the training ground and on the pitch but it's not happened for us. We've got to improve. We need to get away from where we are in the league and make sure we are OK first and then come the end of the year, take a long look at ourselves because we have to move forward."

Meanwhile, Bristol City have revealed that "a few" unnamed members of their first team squad have missed training due to illness this week ahead of Saturday’s game at Portman Road.

I'm sick of all these comments about not being good enough. we've had them for the last five years! Time to go out on the pitch and give us something like we saw against QPR and Blackpool at home. That's how good you really, go and prove it!

Yes he's stating the obvious, but at least he is being honest and not blaming it on bad luck. I remember a certain team in yellow last season kept claiming they were too good to go down and had just been very unlucky with results.

bluelass7 - your faith in the players is touching but I'm not sure at 10 grand a week it hurts as much as when I have to fork out 30 quid to watch the dross on offer this year.

Gonefishing - If I were earning less than 10K a week I'd still give a sh1t when things weren't going well. And no-one asks you to fork out 30 quid a week - If you don't like it, don't go.

Of course, and maybe not yourself, but I suspect there are people on here that
1) Don't even go to the games but just wanna moan
2) Happy to pay the 30 quid just so that they can moan whatever the results
3) or are budgies in disguise

Too many on here think we are a big club and have the right to be up there with Arsenals and Man Utds - We are no more than an average club with an above average fanbase.

So what things aren't going that well but they could be a lot worse too.

Stating the obvious as many of you said... but what else can Walters say... That is th etruth and I really hope next seaso we can bounce back. The other thing I am hopinf for is to be ale to keep Healy and Murphy on permanent basis.

Really there are some dead set freaks that write on this site.

The captain who plays his heart out week in week out, may state the obvious but is truthful and to the point. I would love to see ITFC top of the league and bound for the premier league but we aren't and Walters just says it how it is. I find it refreshing to listen to him speak honestly rather than give us drivel about being unlucky, it takes time to gel, or we have had injuries etc etc.

Im all for listening to other peoples opinions but really, its embarrassing being a town fan when you see some of the pointless crap written by so called fans. Pathetic.

I think that whilst it's good for players to come out and show that they understand the frustration that we fans feel in their lack of performance this season, enough is enough.

We know that they have underperformed, they know that, RK knows that. Stating it over and over doesn't do any good and just gives the negative thinkers the chance to say "I told you so" again... ..and again... and again.

I'm a fan of JW, but as the saying goes "ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS"

COYB - good performance and a win tomorrow please.

Blimey, professional footballers are stupid, aren't they?

Totally agree with you BlueLass. Jon probably didn't go out to make that statement. A player get asked a question and they answer it and then it gets posted on here. What more can he do? Its not as if he is coming out and saying how great we have been. Just because you the majority haven't had anything to moan about this week (Notice how quiet it has been on here) you pick up on the little things.

Jon is the captain and he is saying what the majotity of you have been saying, so surely wouldn't you be on his side. The players know they have been bad and they are not rying to make excuses about it.

As for going on about how much he earns, that's just a pathetic old argument by people that don't understand football. You can tell how much Ipswich means to Jon and whether he was £10k or £50, he would try his hardest for the blue shirt. If people watched the game rather than concentrating on how bad things are they may get more enjoymenet from spending their £30.

Jon is an honest bloke and as captain cant do anything other than be contrite, especially after the second half debacle at P'boro. I dont think that he has had a good season because of those long diagonal panic balls where he is left to sort things out on his own with no support from other members of the team. I would rather have him in our team than play against him. As a team are we too good to go down but not good enough to stay up? Fortunately it seems that there are a lot of slightly dodgier sides around us but there are some must win games coming up like Reading and Scunny at home.

Finally is it me or does there seem to be a curse of the captains arm band this year because whoever has had it has suffered a dip in form.

I think that JW is a good, hard-working player who has taken on a lot of responsibility since becoming captain of a team who have let themselves down.

Being captian of a winning side is easy - and the converse can be true, if you take it seriously - which I believe he does.

I don't think that his form has been helped by being played as a striker. He's not a striker - he's best-suited to being played on the wing, where he thrives.

I hope he scores tomorrow and shuts some people on here up. I also hope he is on the cover of the matchday programme - you can't beat a nice glossy cover, easier to keep clean....

FROM DUST, I MEAN, yeah honestly!!

Comments are a bit déjà vu but it's just something for the press office.
And as for Walters form, he puts in more effort in one game than a lot of players do in a month, so is understandable that he may be exhausted and have a slight dip. Plus keane plays him virtually all game every game. And of course keane plays him in a variety of positions which can't help.

Real fans want honesty and you get that nowadays from Keane and the players, i think we have come a long way in these last three months, when you are down in trouble it is not easy to express yourself and play with confidence results are key and slowly but surely (excluding Peterboro and Saints away) we have improved massively with a huge wait of pressure on the players and manager, Get behind them, pay your money as those of us who do still reguarly even from a long distance away for our club is the Best football club in the world with the most loyal well liked group of supporters in the country (maybe excluding the Adams family up the road). Get behind them tommorrow three points will take the pressure off and then you will see the real Ipswich Town. P.s can not make tommorrow PLEASE HELP MAKE PORTMAN ROAD ROCK!!!
