Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Friday, 26th Mar 2010 08:51

Roy Keane has launched a surprising attack on Town legend Paul Mariner for failing to join him for a drink after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. Keane always makes a point of meeting up with opposition managers after matches and has previously spoken out against bosses who haven’t bothered with the convention.

The Blues boss, who had lauded Mariner’s achievements with Town before the game, said: “I’ve no problem with Paul coming back here, but after the game Paul didn’t have the decency to come down for a drink with us, to see my staff, to see the opposition manager. He was too busy up here seeing all his mates.

“You remember these things in football. It’s not bad blood because I couldn’t have spoken highly enough about Paul before the game, but have the decency to come down for a drink after the game.”

Keane said he asked the former England striker to join him for a second time but he was with Town’s former chairman: “He found his way up here with Mr Sheepshanks and all them when I invited him for a drink again.”

The Town manager says he and his management team always make a point of meeting with their opposite numbers after games: “It's not going to change the result, I appreciate that and it's not bad blood, far from it.

“It gets me because when we go to away games I make sure that all my staff go in for a drink, win, lose or draw. That's representing your club, particularly when you're asked.”

"It gets me because when we go to away games I make sure that all my staff go in for a drink, win, lose or draw."

Maybe you should cut down on the drinking Roy?

We're all set for a relegation battle and this is all we can talk about, pathetic, just pathetic, as I said earlier maybe Mariner got delayed or just doesn't like Keane, so what.......Taxi for Keane!
PS Mariner will always be a God for me, those of you saying otherwise are probably too young to remember what a great player he was.

Well, we don't know the full details of this story, but it sounds like a massive storm in the confines of a very small teacup. C'mon Keano, many of us appreciate your straight talking, you have some admirable qualities, but this just makes you sound paranoid. Don't react! There probably was no malice intended at all. In the words of more than one well-known football manager: "we move on."

Mariner was fizzed up after his win. He'd lost his glasses. Give the guy a break.

Just goes to show the mindset of the man, he saw the greeting Mariner got from the fans so thought he'd try and get back somehow, i despair, he's like a child!

He always was an awkward so and so Mariner, loved his attitude when he was banging them in for Town, not so sure now.I love these traditions in the game, its just nice to uphold them.

Tradition of what?? Sitting in Roy's room after a match having a drink!! A tradition all of half a season. Mariner couldn't be a nicer bloke, was very gracious, loves ITFC & to slag him off for not going to Roy's little room is beyond a sad joke - particularly when we got done 2-nil at home & could still go down. Come on Celtic, tap up the clown.

I have to admit, keane - shut the hell up!

WHEN YOU'VE DONE HALF AS MUCH FOR THIS CLUB AS PAUL MARINER HAS THEN YOU CAN HAVE A POP AT HIM FOR NOT SHARING A DRINK WITH YOU. UNTIL THEN KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.

ridiculous, who does he think will read these comments? US! THE FANS! DOES HE REALLY THINK WERE GOING TO TURN ON PAUL MARINER BECAUSE HE DIDNT SHARE A DRINK WITH OUR NEW LOUDMOUTH, UNDERACHEIVING MANAGER? WHAT IS THE POINT IN SAYIN G SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

STICK TO THE FOOTBALL PLEASE, YOU HAVE ENOUGH ON YOUR PLATE TO WORRY ABOUT BEFORE YOU START SLAGGING OFF CLUB LEGENDS!

THAT IS ALL!

If Keane has asked Mariner then he should have popped in for a drink or declined politely, however Keane's reaction seems a bit over the top to me. Really did not seem the type of person to be affected by trivial things like this, but perhaps he was so frustrated by result and performance that he took umbridge.

the fact is, mariner was back at portman road for the first time in however long, as manager of his relegation struggling side, where he in fact started his career. his team, against the odds (ish, considering our form) beat the club he loves and he received adulation from fans with fond memories of him as a fantastic player. mariner will have got caught up in the emotion of not just his return but a fine win for his side, he most likely had a lot of people he hadnt seen for a long time to go and see, all of them, most likely, vying for his attention and to buy him a drink, so i think this club legend can be forgiven for forgetting to have a drink with keane, who in turn has decided to stick the knife in and moan about the fact that he couldnt have a drink with him, its neither important or worth talking about!!!

Dont agree with many of Roys tactics i'd like to see us play with more width and when needed simply go for it a bit more, a bit like Royles team used to do but i do feel Roy might well be the man to bring us into the 21st cent. Living in the past, soft touch Town has been going on to long for my likeing. The past was great i have wonderfull memories of the past ibut i am greedy i want it again, perhaps just perhaps Keane is the man to remove the old boys club from Portman rd and move us onwards and hopefull upwards, he does deserve his chance and our support. He get mine for at least another year or 2.

Keane hits out at Mariner .... 'I prefer the fist to the spoken word' Keane - probably why old Paul did nt bother - everyone at the club thinks he is n@b jockey - FACT

Yeah, Keane should get worked up about how the season has gone and not whether Mariner should have had a drink with him. Wrong priority Roy !!!!

I actually just called Mr Mariner to find out what actually happened ...Seems that paul was in with the press until 10.45pm with it being his return to the club etc ...and the team from Plymouth were waiting for him . He hadn't showered or anything and actually passed on his regards to the ipswich team through RK's staff and apologised . He did bump into D.Sheepshanks ( who he has known for 30 years ) and had a word ...but did not have a drink with him !!! basically one has to wonder why RK would go to the press with this story !! sounds like someone deflecting a bad day at the office ( some may argue a bad year !! )

Oh dear - people are now saying that RK is an embarrassment a joke etc because of this. I really do worry about some of these so called fans (and no naa I am not referring to you). Here is the situation:

1. RK does nothing but say good things about Marriner before the game. Very well said and interestingly receives few compliments from the people who constantly slate him. Moreover nothing is said about these positive comments being made public.

2. RK arrives late to the dugout to ensure Marriner receives the reception he deserves. RK receives little in way of compliment from the people who constantly slate him.

3. RK invites Marriner for a drink - despite losing the game. Marriner shows a total lack of respect by not responding. People on here who have failed to compliment Roy on his PUBLIC praise for Marriner now MOAN that he speaks out in public.

This simply is unbelievable. People talk about RK and a lack of respect. I suggest it is YOU who lack respect. ChamberM calls RK a 'TW@T' because Marriner shows total disrespect. Deary me. Pathetic.

I have to say again - if some of you hate RK so much that you will moan and slate him over the most petty of things, perhaps it is time to find another club to support.

Mightytown sums it up perfectly. I'd be pissed off if I was the home manager and the visiting manager got a better reception than I did. I can't believe Keane is still managing ITFC. Paul Mariner is and always will be an Ipswich legend, Keane is an overated billy big time who even by his own admission is on borrowed time.

Not only are you the worst manager weve had since Duncan but you are also a complete knob. Paul wouldn't have a drink with me Boo f**kin Hoo.
First hes making out how hard he is with the I throw punches line now he's whinging like a 5 year old girl who's just been told she cant have a pony for xmas. Embarrassment isnt the word, total Bell-end is more suitable.

Jas00999 - i think the simple thing is ..people have had enough ..it is not about disrespect or anything to do with mariner ...all he is doing is deflecting things away from poor performances ...anyone who knows PM knows he is a great guy and is totally down to earth and will drink with anyone ...why actually bring it up in the first place !!...i am a fan of RK and hope he does better than he has done over the past 12 months ...but i really don't see us moving forward . This is a 24 month project and it is tough to see any improvement ..i really hope he it all works out but i totally understand that most people have had enough ..

Jas00999 has gone quiet, just because fans don't support leaned disentangle mean they should go and support Another team, keane is a mug and shocking manager but will never stop supporting ipswich, can't believe keane is spekin out at an Ipswich legend, unberlievable fans hate him as it is! Keano out!! No doubt jas00999 goes and supports who ever keane manages next

I agree 100% with Jas00999 for what its worth. Unfortunatly many of the keyboard warriors on here have so little to do in their sad, pathetic lives that slagging off RK for whatever new wrong they see is all they can derive pleasure from.
