Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Keane Hits Out at Mariner
Friday, 26th Mar 2010 08:51

Roy Keane has launched a surprising attack on Town legend Paul Mariner for failing to join him for a drink after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. Keane always makes a point of meeting up with opposition managers after matches and has previously spoken out against bosses who haven’t bothered with the convention.

The Blues boss, who had lauded Mariner’s achievements with Town before the game, said: “I’ve no problem with Paul coming back here, but after the game Paul didn’t have the decency to come down for a drink with us, to see my staff, to see the opposition manager. He was too busy up here seeing all his mates.

“You remember these things in football. It’s not bad blood because I couldn’t have spoken highly enough about Paul before the game, but have the decency to come down for a drink after the game.”

Keane said he asked the former England striker to join him for a second time but he was with Town’s former chairman: “He found his way up here with Mr Sheepshanks and all them when I invited him for a drink again.”

The Town manager says he and his management team always make a point of meeting with their opposite numbers after games: “It's not going to change the result, I appreciate that and it's not bad blood, far from it.

“It gets me because when we go to away games I make sure that all my staff go in for a drink, win, lose or draw. That's representing your club, particularly when you're asked.”

@devontractorboy Rk isright and even though I am hugh Mariner fan having watched him play for us many many times, he was out of order in not spending 15 minutes going for a drink. As for who should shut it I think it should be you. RK has interestuing things to say and the majority of fans want to hear him. You on the other hand only have your ignorant posts that no one but other morons want to read.

why would mariner want too have a drink with a cry baby ' useless manager and renowned football cheat .i think we all know who the better man is the bloke who has many people wanting to greet him after a return of many years or the bloke who whinges cause the other manager didnt have a drink with him.and the scoreboard tells us who the better manager is as well. imagine what mariner could do here with the money and resources roy has squandered

JAS0999...IM CALLING KEANE A TW'T BECAUSE HES GOING CRYING TO THE PRESS BECAUSE PAUL MARINER, AND IPSWICH LEGEND WONT GO FOR A DRINK WITH HIM AFTER THE GAME BECAUSE HES CATCHING UP WITH SOME OLD FRIENDS FROM IPSWICH, IS IT SO WRONG FOR MARINER TO DO THIS, IS HE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK TO PEOPLE HE HAS BEEN PROPERLY AWAY FROM FOR YEARS. WHY SHOULD KEANE BE WORRIED ABOUT THIS, IF HE WAS A PROPER MANAGER HE WOULD BE MORE CONCENTRATED ON GETTING US HIGHER UP IN THE LEAGUE AND PROPERL OUT OF TROUBLE!

Like all Ipswich managers you have my full support Roy, but I don't think this is the best way to endear yourself further to the Ipswich fans!!

There's more to Ipswich than Roy Keane. He needs to drop the ego and the whinging and get stuck in!

Paul Mariner - an ITFC legend - every right to talk to who he wants at this club.
Roy Keane - not proved himself at the club in any way, shape, or form to date - therefore I suggest he stops trying to influence such people as Paul Mariner and concentrate on his own job in hand.

Well Done Paul on your teams win here (although it hurt) - and well done for doing your chosen thing afterwards.
Totally understand why you would prefer, with your limited time on the night, to spent time afterwards with people such as David Sheepshanks, old friends, etc; - you'd done your bit on the pitch with Keane and shown how to extract three points from the 'fortress'. lol.

Always good to see proven legends return to the club.

WickedBlue - get a life - and some manners and respect for others, at the same time.

The first town match I saw was in the 1950s when we beat Torquay 6-0 at home. Being young and quite stupid [!!] I thought that that was supposed to happen at every game. [55 years or so onwards, I still expect us to win every game 6-0].
I've seen so many managers, players, leagues, internationals so many ups and so many downs etc, but I must confess that this season and this particular manager have been the worst ever and the situation at the club is testing my quite considerable patience. This man harbours grudges like no-one else I have ever come across in any walk of life. He treats his players with contempt, the fans little better. It's great to have someone who is passionate about the game, but that passion requires a large application of intelligence, integrity and human understanding to avoid offending and upsetting everyone around you. It's really quite easy - engage brain before opening mouth!!
