Bruce Unsure of Future
Bruce Unsure of Future
Thursday, 6th May 2010 15:50

Central defender Alex Bruce says he is not yet sure about his future as he looks to end the season on a high with loan club Leicester City in the play-offs. Bruce has been at the Walkers Stadium since January.

The former Birmingham man is now recovered from a hernia operation which he hopes has finally got to the root of the recurrent groin problem which has hampered him this season.

Bruce, who has made only two starts and one sub appearance for the Foxes, says he’s currently concentrating on Leicester’s play-off semi-finals against Cardiff: “I feel as right as rain now and am concentrating on helping Leicester into the top flight.

“After that I’m not sure where I stand as I haven’t heard from Ipswich since January. It’s nice to feel wanted and appreciated, and I’m enjoying my time at Leicester.

“If Ipswich want me back next season I shall be proud to pull the shirt back on again as I’ve always had a good relationship with the fans and enjoyed my time there. But if I’m surplus to requirements at Portman Road then I’ll look elsewhere.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but I’ve an Ipswich contract to the summer of 2011 and will enjoy coming back if wanted.”

Meanwhile, further TWTD Swedish football experts have suggested central defender Ragnar Sigurdsson as a possible reason for the Blues’ reported attendance at last week’s IFK Gothenburg-Malmö FF match.

Sigurdsson, 23, is a highly-rated Icelandic full international who plays on the right-side of the centre of defence, where the Blues are short of cover, particularly if Bruce moves on this summer.

Elsewhere, former Town centre-half Chris Swailes, 39, has been released by Blue Square Premier Gateshead.

No problems with Bruce coming back and fighting for his place but I suspect Keane has other ideas.

So, Alex Bruce "hasn't heard from Ipswich since January."

Not a very good indication of our manager's 'man-management'......

You're not the only one, Alex. I think we're all a little unsure of the future. Who will win the election ? Will the other volcano blow ? When will Britain bounce back from recession ? Is climate really changing ? Who will be our right back next season ? Alex, it could be you.

AB is not the first player out on loan to say "I haven't heard from Ipswich since I got here". Not good, town, not good at all.

AB is a good squad player only if he can stay fit, something he has trouble doing, but definately a 100% committed player so surely should be in RK's plans?

I really dont like the way that alot of fans can so easily assume you can Just keep a player as a "squad player" yes Alex Bruce would be great on the bench as cover for CB or RB but unless he is willing to take a pay cut and sit on the bench behind somone else its not very sensible is it.
same goes for John stead..David Wright, Richard Wright, Pablo counago etc.. al these players were bought to be our first team regulars
As such they will be on our highest pay band unless you significantly want to increase your whole wage budget these players have to go to get the new first team regulars you want

Simply so oh no way Keane your a joke we should keep him as back up is simply not sensible and makes no real sense what so ever

I suspect may will see this as RK's fault. Short memories. Lets not forget; JIM hung Bruce out to dry and wasn't even going to offer him a new contract. Roy did. So before you condemn Roy, think on and get your facts right.

Chris Swailes - wow let's get him back. Still a mere lad at 39. Always remember his fantastic own goal against Aston Villa, or is this old man's memory going...

a mate sorted me tickets in the players lounge for the Wigan-Hull game Monday (glamorous I know!) where I was thanking Mike Pollitt for his brief but brilliant Ipswich career when he turned to the guy next to him and said "you should thank this guy, he's a real Ipswich legend". Cue a blank look from me before the man introduced himself as Chris Swailes, I'm sure his nose had been broken a few times since his Town days!

I would class Pollitt as more of a legend anyway, as good a pro as Swailes was Pollitt had arguably the most fondly-remembered single game Town career of all!

Hopefully - it won't be with us. One of the worst players we've had for a few years. Not quite as bad as Drissa Diallo.

Always gives 100%, and is good cover for McAuley and Delaney if either gets injured, or is suspended

Also Ragnar Sigurdsson any relation to Gylfi of Reading?

Bruce is an awful footballer, he's got alot of heart and commitment but he just hasnt got the skill that we need to push on, i think it would be best for the club to sell him

do we really need him? he is a centre back and def not a right back, when delaney is fit again he will go straight back into the team alongside mcauley, as that is our best CB pairing by far and is probably the biggest plus in an otherwise poor season. Bruce isn't the soloution at right back and so would only be back up to Mcauley and delaney at CB, we have smith and eastman for that, not forgetting Troy Brown if he signs his 1 year extension, Brown looked comfortable on the ball when he came on against sheff utd and almost scored. so in my eyes Bruce isn't really needed and he hasn't played that much up at leicester either, so cant be that gd

ITFC1985: It's not true to say Bruce is an "awful footballer." I agree he may lack some polish (aka known as finer football skills) but then how many "polished" centre backs do we have in the Championship? Most of them do the defending job first, and it's a bit of a bonus if you get any "skills" on top of that. I thought Bruce defended very solidly against Cardiff today (9th May) and I'd certainly have him back in the squad as cover anywhere along the back line. And he does, as you say, also have all the drive and commitment you could wish for. Whoever we bring in in his place will have to be a damn good backup (and be happy with that role) if we assume McA and Delaney are our first choices.
