Wright Set for West Ham Return
Wright Set for West Ham Return
Monday, 14th Jun 2010 11:43

Keeper Richard Wright could be set for a return to former club West Ham, having been released by the Blues at the end of the season. The former England keeper is in talks with the Hammers regarding a move back to Upton Park.

If terms are agreed, Wright is likely to reprise the role of regular sub keeper with the Londoners, a position he occupied during the 2007/08 season, aside from three Carling Cup appearances, despite speculation regarding Robert Green's West Ham future.

The 32-year-old moved back to Portman Road in the summer of 2008, but was considered surplus to requirements by Roy Keane with his Town deal up at the end of 2009/10. League One Charlton are also understood to be interested in the ex-England man.

Elsewhere, ex-Town defender Chris Swailes has joined Blue Square North side Blyth Spartans as player/assistant manager. The 40-year-old left Blue Square Premier club Gateshead at the end of 2009/10.

Meanwhile, former Blue John Peddelty is recovering in Addenbrooke's Hospital after collapsing while out on a golf course last week.

The 55-year-old central defender made 50 appearances for the Blues between 1973 and 1976, scoring seven goals, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle as part of the deal which saw Paul Mariner join Town.

When DWright was told of his release he expressed regret and thanked the fans. RWright, not a peep.

I think murphy will prove to be a very average signing, which in fairness would be a bit of a sucess for keane, if only average summed up most of his signings we might have sneaked top half.
I would also point out wrighty was in top form at the start of the season but when the side are poor confidence will suffer.

Robbie you are right in some respects, if it was a normal 9 to 5 job but being a footballer is a dream job some people i.e Mogga were willing to pay for free just for the love of the club and the fans. Im sure a lot of people would love to get the chance to play professional football so if you have the ability why piss it up the wall? It shows a lot about his character and unfortunatly it doesn't look good from where Im sitting. Doubt he cares though, he's probably laughing his way to the bank. Anyway how is it less responsibility he's our 3rd choice keeper!

@ Yorksblue - read my comment it says lacked a quality keeper for too long. How long ago since those guys left us, 4 or 5 seasons ago (maybe it was sooner, but seems an age away). Also we only had Alexander for a few months a nice bit of business but quickly forgotten (was nothing more than a loan we got a good return on in some respects - could have been a good goalie though if he'd stayed), and Kelvin Davis - yeah, not a great keeper IMHO, but was certainly that sort of figurehead to command a defence which I think we still lack and also you can't fault his attitude look at what he did at S'ton, now thats a committed player.

ROBBIE - seriuolsy if you're the type of person who would sit in a job just for more money then you're not the sort of person a team or company would benefit from employing. I employ people in my business and if they just turned up to take my money and showed no commitment to improve, promote themselves or give anything back to me then they would not be an employee for very long and I don't think the rest of the people there who turn up and work thier socks off would be overly joyed to see that peoson day in day out!

Monkeyblue no one said Keane had bought Murphey to be number one.... i certainly didn't see it that way he got him at the start of the season knowing he wouldn't be able to play until January Therefore his thinking was to buy Murphey to be a youngish number 2 and try and push Wright For number one.
Only wright played crap so we needed a new number one.

someone tell me why we released him?

I'm guessing he was on really, really high wages and adding that to the fact he was 3rd choice here, it was sensible to release him.

I still felt Wrighty best keeper we had on the books we should have at least offered reduced terms - don't feel fair to say he's money grabbing when we offered him nothing - better west ham than the scummers up the road.
Still a good keeper he was used as a scape goat for a very leaking defence at the beginning of the season

How do you know he was not asked if he would take a pay cut?

monkey_blue, wright will not be there number1 keeper if calamity green leaves, they'll sign some one who is a premiership keeper not someone who thinks they are.

Haha well said Leadbitter6, Wright has way too high an opinion of himself. He's simply average.

Another slow news day at ITFC!

Some of the criticisms of R Wright on here aren't really justified or neccessary. So what if he wants to be a back up keeper at West Ham? Sounds like a reasonable gig to me, at the very least a reasonable plan B if no other decent offers are forthcoming. All clubs need back up keepers and West Ham could do a lot worse than signing R Wright on a free, especially with the new rules regarding home grown players etc.

Much worse/greedier/less dedicated players have come and gone before and no doubt many more will come and go in years to come, so best not to take it personally when they do...

He has a good chance of becoming first choice if Green is sold to save money.

Would be a fool to turn it down.
