Burley Hopeful on Garvan Deal
Burley Hopeful on Garvan Deal
Friday, 30th Jul 2010 10:34

Former Blues boss George Burley says he hopes to complete the deal to take Owen Garvan to Crystal Palace in the next couple of days. The Irish U21 international was in talks with the Eagles over the last few days after the clubs agreed a £225,000 fee.

Burley says the move could be completed over the weekend: "We've agreed a fee with Ipswich for Owen Garvan and that's one we are hoping we can complete in the next 24-48 hours.

"I met with the boy [on Wednesday] and that went very well. But contract talks are always a tricky business so it isn't done yet by any means.”

Persuading Garvan to leave the club where he has played since his days as an academy trainee may be Burley’s most difficult task. The Irishman is reported to have sounded out ex-Blues Alan Lee and David Wright regarding the move.

Elsewhere, reports in Lancashire claim Jon Stead's switch to Blackpool could be in the balance with initial talks not having gone well.

Earlier in the week, a proposed move to Bristol City broke down with wages reportedly the sticking point.

Seems like we pay our players too much ! And some reward us with little effort and commitment .

Spot on Pims

I like Garvan and Stead but dont feel they have what it take to take us to the next level. Counago and Quinn would do the same sort of job as them. So there Wages can be used to buy better replacements Keane has said he need a misfielder is Garvan goes and Striker when Stead Goes.

Why oh why does every transfer feel like it goes on and on and on!
just get on with it so we can go after a replacement. Season starts next week and we have no real new blood in the team. Im seriously concerned about our future at this rate!

Owen Garvan has proved himself. Did none of you notice the quality of his passing and set pieces last season. Especially when compared to the alternatives. There are a lot of Ipswich fans that need to open there eyes to the football rather than just conveniently believing that Roy knows best!

Dietmar - I totally agree. Apart from 2 shocking games last season when he got subbed off early (and where arguably any of the team could have been subbed) he did well for us - giving a different balance to the team than just the similar styles of Norris, leadbitter and colback. He played a part in some of our better spells.
But I do think it's yet another example of a player keane doesn't like, and not necessarily anything to do with football.

If he builds up his strength and puts a bit more aggression into his play, I think Garvan could be a top Championship player. He reads the game well and is skilful on the ball, especially the quality of his passing.

However, there's only so long you can wait for a player to develop and Keane, rightly or wrongly, seems to have decided that he's had long enough.

He's the best passer we have, or had!

i agree this bloke is young a good manager exciting style and he would dazzle. he could do with getting off his arse a bit more and wanting it but a lot of the team seemto be in the same boat .i think the keane confusion has messed around the team and club and the sooner we get rid the sooner we start rebuild and to climb tables.hopefully when keanes gone end of year we can all start feeling a litle more positive.shame 2 years look like they are wasted but what you do eh ? i reckon keane mightnot be only problem at top as well and a couple of other chiefs might need sorting

Id like to see him stay as he is a quality player but from his point of view he needs a fresh start.
If Palace sign him, they will be a serious threat next season with Ambrose and Garvan pulling the strings for Burley. Expect to see some free flowing football at Palace this season!

Funny, RK gets rid of Garvan, the best passer of the ball we have, but continues to give Priskin time to come good. Priskin to score 5 goals this season.

I really do worry about keanes judgement on players...I really believe he makes too many decsions based on personal feelings rather than what they do for team. Garvan is very laid back so about as far from mr 24/7 intensity keane as you can get.

Garvan is too hit and miss for me, even when he played for Magilton on a regular bases. Garvan was going to quit football not so long back and the club put a arm around him then, as they are with Priskin at the moment he came from a London club and was then loaned back to a london club (Maybe he is finding it hard to settle). Everyone keeps saying Keane dont like Garvan maybe its the other way round. Keane will run the club different to Magilton and Garvan does not agree.
(John Terry and Capillo or even the whole of the french team)
How long before a club who are paying someone 5 -10 grand a week say enough is enough. What would your boss say to you at work?
Before anyone say's I am anti Garvan and pro Keane, Not at all. as i said he is just too hit and miss for me and I feel he is not the player to take us forward.
As for Keane and Priskin they have to provide the goods this season or I feel they will need to follow Garvan.
Before I am call every name under the sun, Its just my opinion and points of view and I could be wrong. Time will tell

What a waste. The reason he hasn't reached full potential is because Keane hasn't played him. Had the potential to be another Ipswich great but has been failed by our current boss & cast aside for the likes of Colback, Leadbitter etc. Await the sale of Wickham with baited breath.

KJarlosfanangal: agree with you > had high hopes for garvan but feel if he really was that good then a premiership team or a high flying championship team would have taken him not a team who escaped relegation on the last day of the season. As for the best passer of a ball this club has had I am sure a Mr Muhren may have a few things to say about that. And Monkey Blue - how do you know this is based on RK personal feelings?? Are you hiding the fact that you are "in the know"

Good move for Garvan and the club - even though I am a Garvan fan, it is time for him to move on.

Man of the match at home to QPR last season. So immediately gets dropped, and that says everything about our manager.

I hope the remaining RK fans have strong stomachs and enjoy their hoofball.

Gutted.

Good luck to the boy... best for both parties that he moves on. I'm not gonna go over ground I've written about time and again, but basically Garven has not fulfilled the potential he showed when he first broke into the squad. Move him on... get a better replacement and everyones happy.

Going to be sad to see him go, was outstanding agaist QPR, I wonder what some of these fans watch, for me he is our best midfielder, Leadbitter & Norris together simply don't work, My worry is who is going to replace him? Keane simply doesn't like him because he doesn't run round and make lots of takles, sorry but you need a balance, but forgot we don't play football any more. Very Depressing times.
