Clegg to Look at Friendly Pricing
Clegg to Look at Friendly Pricing
Monday, 9th Aug 2010 08:59

Chief executive Simon Clegg says he will look at the pricing of Town’s pre-season friendlies in the wake of the disappointing 5,770 attendance at last week’s 1-0 defeat to a Spurs XI. A number of TWTD posters were unhappy at paying £15 to watch what was essentially a reserves fixture with neither side fielding more than a handful of first team regulars.

Clegg told TWTD: “I think with the benefit of hindsight we might have done things slightly differently and certainly it’s been a learning experience for me.

“There’s no doubt about it, I’d prefer to see more of the stadium full for friendly matches and we’ll have to think very carefully in terms of the pricing structure to get the optimum price for the fans and for the club in future games.

“For me as a chief executive, it’s a case of getting a balance between a full stadium and trying to generate the right level of income to offset the expenditure we have.

"People forget that even for a friendly we carry huge overheads as a result of opening up the stadium - putting in turnstile operators, putting in stewards, floodlights, first aid, the police, the whole operation. Those costs have to be covered or it just becomes non-cost-effective.”

How about reviewing match day ticket prices as well?

They might just do that if attendances drop dramtically ^

I still reckon we'll get in over 20k though?

And season ticket prices. If they were cheaper more people would get them and you would probabaly make more money as more people would be going.

Providing free admission would have generated more income than the attendance at that match - think of the money generated through mercanidise and the profit made behind the bars on food/drink. No brainer Clegg.

ffs. he'll look at ticket prices for friendlies then, will he? and the next friendly would be when? so they have a year for dust to settle on this and then conveniently forget about it. in the meantime there's 23 league games ahead of us, perhaps a cup game or two - will they look at pricing for those so we get at least close to a full ground to create some atmosphere for the players to perform in, and put opposition on back foot?

surely all expenditure is known for a game? ok, so variable given size of crowd (eg more stewards/police) but this still trackable. is it not a simple case of costing this all out and see what lowest you can charge is against costs encurred?

perhaps they do do this but, comparing our pricing structure against other clubs, I doubt it. then again, perhaps all the other clubs are prepared to run match days at a loss? hmm.

How about getting the nets and posts behind each goal removed as well? I didn't expect to pay £15 for my usual seat, only to get a restricted view.
Sort it out, Mr Clegg.

I think season ticket holders should get into friendly games for free anyway (and, no, I have never had a season ticket myself), and should always have the option of buying another match-day ticket (for a friend), for any game, at a hugely discounted price : I would say £10 for a league game, probably about £3 for a match like this one.

are prices are stupid, my mates a fulham fan and the tickets there are cheaper and there in the prem and were not.

well actually if you got a ticket on the day for west ham it was £20 which is a disgrace, if it was £10 or £12 on the day conscenions about £3-5 then they would have got atleast 15-20000 there and may be 10000 for spurs and doesnt take a geneous to work out they would make more money ,

and if they got the food back in house then they would make more money there.

i think a standard season ticket is not a bad price as it works out £16 a game but think a on the day price is about £30 which i think is to steep may be £25 would be better and attract more on the day sales.

i still think the under 11 deal was good and is one reason me and my mum both got one to but i will loose that next year and my daughter loves going so just hope they play better this year, and so far its going good so better pull out a good performance on sat

This really is one of my bugbears. I'm absolutely no businessman, and I know business people don't see it like we, the fans, do. But, business people, it might be important to understand that football is not just another enterprise. Even if it were, I still maintain that it must be good business practice to lower prices and increase attendances. Having spoken briefly to Clegg about this, I think the official line goes something like: if we reduce prices, people will get used to paying less and won't be willing to pay more again if we improve our league position/get promoted. OK, my priorities are different. I want to see the ground full so that our friends up the road can stop taunting us about our attendances and so that we can get the atmosphere back at PR. But surely, even to the business mind, there must be "creative" ways of pricing games: Family tickets? Bring a friend for free? 10 tickets at a reduced price? It's not my job to think of the ideas! Even loyal supporters will eventually say enough is enough. And for the inflated prices they pay, I think ITFC supporters are extremely loyal because they are already milked as hard as the policy makers dare. Like many others, I still am willing, as often as I can, to pay the fare over from Sweden and the exorbitant single-day match ticket, knowing full well that I'm being fleeced. Finally, I agree with Daleyitfc above: surely a loyal season ticket holder shouldn't have to pay anything to watch a second-rate friendly? C'mon Town. Do something to get the people back into the ground - on the pitch and in their pockets! Rant over!

@steve_itfc_sweden... actually, clegg does think it's your job (as a supporter to think of creative pricing structures). at a supporters forum in london last season it was put to him that we'd be better served with lower ticket prices to get bigger attendances to get better atmosphere. his response? "if fans have any ideas we'd be happy to listen."

I'm confused. What about matches played behind closed doors? How does money get generated from those? Aren't pre-season friendlies about getting match fitness/ experience and therefore not about making money? Will we be charging for watching training too?

Wasn't the game at PSV Eindhoven about €4.50, which included an afternoon of entertainment and admission to the match?

Surely a fiver would cover all our overheads?

Another fan who paid £15 for a restricted view of a reserve game here, not nice walking away from portman road feeling like my club has ripped me off.

About time too. £20 to watch a friendly (Hammers game) is just a joke. If the wife hadnt of booked the Novotel on one of those "£69 and ya cant get ya money back if you decide not to come" deals i would have taken one look at the ticket prices and not bothered with the 6 hour round trip. £10 at an absolute maximum for friendly games IMHO and free for season ticket holders.

The owner and to a lesser extent his Chief Executive have loads of dosh;so dont probably appreciate the fact that they are overcharging for some season tickets, certainly match day tickets, definitely friendlies and also food and drink.Seems Mr Clegg had some of this suggested to him last season. As Cloughie once said 'I listen to what they have to say,and then do what I want'

Hopefully the club made some money from the programmes for the Tottenham game. The club used to provide single page team sheets with the players appearing and shirt numbers when reserve matches were played at Portman Road. Why they feel the need to charge £1:50 for a glossy piece of paper which has no relevance to the match being watched is beyond me. The whole episode was a Public Relations disaster.
