Town Complete Scotland Signing
Town Complete Scotland Signing
Monday, 23rd Aug 2010 13:26

Town have confirmed the signing of Wigan striker Jason Scotland for a fee understood to be £750,000. The Trinidad and Tobago international, whose move to Town was first revealed on TWTD earlier in the month, has signed a two-year deal.

Scotland was unveiled at a press conference at Portman Road this lunchtime and says he’s pleased to have joined the club: “I’m delighted to be here and an Ipswich player and hopefully I can continue to score goals in the Championship and carry Ipswich Town into the Premiership.”

Manager Roy Keane said: "Jason is a good player and I'm delighted to have him at the club. He will bring us something different.

"He is more of a poacher than the other strikers we have here, who do a lot of work down the channels.

"We are always going on to our front players about being in and around the six-yard box and Jason will do that.

"He has proved he can score goals at this level but we have to be patient with him and give him time to settle in."

Town chief executive Simon Clegg confirmed that the move had been expected to go through last week but Wigan manager Roberto Martinez wanted to keep him for the weekend game against Chelsea.

Clegg says he’s pleased to finally get his man: “I’m absolutely delighted to have completed the signing of Jason. I think we as a club recognise that one of the areas we were short on last season was putting the ball in the back of the net and we wanted a striker with a proven record of doing so at this level.”

Scotland started his career his career in his home country with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force, where he played alongside his close friend Carlos Edwards.

In 2003 he joined Dundee United after a trial, moving on to St Johnstone two years later and then Swansea City for a fee of £25,000 in 2007.

Scotland enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans, netting 29 goals in all competitions during their 2007/08 League One promotion campaign and 24 in the Welsh side’s first year back in the Championship.

Last summer the 5ft 8in tall striker moved on to Wigan for £2 million but the switch hasn’t been a success, the Trinidadian netting only one league goal last season.

Nicknamed Rocket, Scotland has won 41 full international caps and has scored eight goals, playing alongside Edwards and former Blues loanee Stern John.

The 31-year-old, who has been handed the number 10 shirt will be in the squad for tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Crewe.

Dont see the fuss here. We've been after a "proven striker" for years, we've now got one who scored 20+ in the last two seasons he was in the championship. Grante we've got rid of Stead, Pablo and Lisbie but none of them contributed a decent number of goals and was never going to be first choice. As for shifting Walters, decent bit of business considering the fee and the fact we spent so much on Edwards who plays in a similar position. We used to have a bloated, over-paid squad and now we dont...

A great signing Roy, play like you did against us at Swansea a couple of seasons ago Jason and it will be wonderful move for us and you, I'd still like Chopra as well though or another really good Striker.

A decent signing, proven goalscorer for what is essentially not very much money considering what Wigan had to pay for him.
Getting sick of this Chopra business now, HES NOT GOING TO SIGN!
....Scotland has a better goals ratio at this level anyway..and hes going to be grateful for the chance to play regular football. Chopra will just go where the money is...

This is my first post so sorry if you've heard it all before..
I live on the otherside of the country now (since 1989) so I don't get to home games. I think my last was the 2-2 draw with Forest in 1984! however back then as now we were always of the opinion if you were good enough you are old enough...or at least worth a go in the side for a few games. I hope Jason doesn't get a run out at Crewe tomorrow. Knowing our luck he will probably pick up a knock. I would like to see Ronan Murray start up front? He's about the same size as Jason and I would want a fresh scotland for saturdays home game to counteract the inevitable Stead goal.

At last, all the deadwood gone (Lisbie, Bruce, Garven, Walters, Stead, Wright (R), Martin, Pablo) just Quinn to go! I always said it was time for the culture of the club to change and Keane has achieved it in one and a bit seasons!

Welcome on board on Jason..... Just cant wait till Wickham is back to partner you...... A decent back up would be good. I reckon if we are any where near the play offs come xmas we will be back in for Mr Chopra!

I wasn't moaning. I just think it would be fair for Ronan to have a go and give Jason his debut in front of the home fans thats all. We want him fit and fresh to put one over on BC

Crazyblue, agree with your post but u forgot the legend that is Colin Healy ;). Still think we need more additions to remain competitive come November and December

Denham i totally agree, whatever happens people find a way to moan!
I hope fans can let scotland settle in, and not get on his back after 2 games if he hasn't netted for us. I would rather spend money on 3 or 4 players than splash out 3-4million on chopra. The way that scotland has moved from the prem to us shows hes willing to do that just to play football. Excited to see him play now!

We've got Scotland so we don't need Chopra - if we've got the kind of money to make another bid for Chopra lets get McCormack instead. And don't we have any lower league or foreign (i.e. Dutch) scouts anymore? We never seem to be looking at these options which is frustrating when you think about our past successes here (Gus Uhlenbeek aside!).

I'm more than happy with Scotland joining us, think he will prove to be a V.good signing, However, my concern is we still look so low on numbers, we reall need another striker, another midfielder & a right-back. Keane states that he doesn't expect any more signing before the window closes, but for me this is utter madness....

Yes!!!! movement on the transfer front!! Welcome Jason, got a good feeling 'bout this one. May need some time to settle in, but i'm sure he'll do fine. Still think we need more tho, would rather have permanents than loans, don't quite think the commitment is there from some loanees ( Healy springs to mind). would like to see more this week but who knows. looking forward to sat, i'll be cheering from the south stand upper, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Jon Stead was a fine striker.Valuation? £3m probably. If Scotland at 3 times the price and a quarter of the credentials can succeed, well great. But this seems to be a salary question. What a great shame.
