Town Complete Scotland Signing
Town Complete Scotland Signing

Town have confirmed the signing of Wigan striker Jason Scotland for a fee understood to be £750,000. The Trinidad and Tobago international, whose move to Town was first revealed on TWTD earlier in the month, has signed a two-year deal.

Scotland was unveiled at a press conference at Portman Road this lunchtime and says he’s pleased to have joined the club: “I’m delighted to be here and an Ipswich player and hopefully I can continue to score goals in the Championship and carry Ipswich Town into the Premiership.”

Manager Roy Keane said: "Jason is a good player and I'm delighted to have him at the club. He will bring us something different.

"He is more of a poacher than the other strikers we have here, who do a lot of work down the channels.

"We are always going on to our front players about being in and around the six-yard box and Jason will do that.

"He has proved he can score goals at this level but we have to be patient with him and give him time to settle in."

Town chief executive Simon Clegg confirmed that the move had been expected to go through last week but Wigan manager Roberto Martinez wanted to keep him for the weekend game against Chelsea.

Clegg says he’s pleased to finally get his man: “I’m absolutely delighted to have completed the signing of Jason. I think we as a club recognise that one of the areas we were short on last season was putting the ball in the back of the net and we wanted a striker with a proven record of doing so at this level.”

Scotland started his career his career in his home country with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force, where he played alongside his close friend Carlos Edwards.

In 2003 he joined Dundee United after a trial, moving on to St Johnstone two years later and then Swansea City for a fee of £25,000 in 2007.

Scotland enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans, netting 29 goals in all competitions during their 2007/08 League One promotion campaign and 24 in the Welsh side’s first year back in the Championship.

Last summer the 5ft 8in tall striker moved on to Wigan for £2 million but the switch hasn’t been a success, the Trinidadian netting only one league goal last season.

Nicknamed Rocket, Scotland has won 41 full international caps and has scored eight goals, playing alongside Edwards and former Blues loanee Stern John.

The 31-year-old, who has been handed the number 10 shirt will be in the squad for tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Crewe.

A close friend of Edwards--that's good news, as it suggests he may genuinely want to come here and do a job. And two years of ghastly Scotland puns has got to be worth it.

Our recent history with Caribean frontmen hasn't been great, Lisbie, Stern John, though i have high hopes for this one!!
And no one can moan about him being either Ex-Sunderland or Irish.
Welcome aboard Jason and lets the goals floweth!

I do agree with some of you who are a bit concerned that Keane has come out and said there will be no more permanent signings. It does question Stead's sale, which is cheap!! This season is supposed to be the promotion pushing season in Keane's and Clegg's so called 'two-year plan'.

if it is gonna be loans they will have to be very good ones. i would love to see TOM CLEVERLEY!!!!

Welcome aboard Jason and good luck!!!
Now we need another one like Scotland up front and we are grat in terms of strikers. Should we get a midfielder and a defender it will be even better!!!

I have read on a few different forums for other clubs (Swansea etc.) that Scotland really excelled at this level as a lone front man, which is perfect for our new formation. Edwards, Scotland and Townsend (when back from suspension) is a fantastic attacking trio at Champ level. I would love McCormack too though, who can play in all three positions.

Welcome aboard Jason!!
I have heard that M.Evans wants ITFC to have a wage cap of around 10k a week.
Hence the sale of Stead, Pabs, R Wright.
If Stead was on 8k a week he would still be here! the last thing we want in our club is massive debt again so Thats the reason Steady has gone.
Good on you M.E. im glad we are not one these clubs who pays silly wages (Cardiff)
Make them play for ITFC because they WANT TO!! not because they are getting a good wage!!! We need players who are starting to feel hungry and a bit of pride wearing the blue and white shirt and not just someone picking up a hefty wage each month!

Good signing. It seems no coincidence that Town have targeted not only quality players at this level but ones with friends already at the club (Fulop/Priskin, Edwards/Scotland). I believe this is all related to building a strong bond and unity between the squad which was clearly lacking in the last few seasons and one of the main reasons we haven't looked like a team in the past. Can't fault the way of thinking...

Excellent news! Welcome aboard Jason.
1 of the 4 signing we are hoping for.
Just a Defender (RB), a midfielder (Holding) and maybe another striker.

disagree JayITFC - if we had an offer for Priskin we would have bitten someones hand off. Just so happens we have a couple of people from the same country... a lot of people if you're Irish.

I wouldnt say Town is a"shambles"...leaner and keener maybe !
But we do need a couple more signings, which I suspect will be season long loans after the window has close !

Stead "awesome" ?....hard working , putting himself about a bit more , but still would never be a prolific goal scorer. "Good Luck" Steady, a decent and honest striker !

I s'pose playing English or/and local players would be asking too much.

Anyway, let's enjoy a rather pleasant start to the season

I have this feeling that Scotland is another panic buy like Priskin (as the Chopra thing hasn't worker out)

But then again, his 31 and for £750,000 - it 'could' prove to be a bargain.

I hope that Clegg/Evans can push the boat out now for RK's other targets, he needs to be rewarded as he has done what has been asked

Good to see that we've got in a player who's proven at this level, hopefully his confidence hasn't been too affected by his unsuccessful spell at Wigan...

Still think we need another 3/4 players in tbh, though have been quiet impressed by the signings we've made so far...

We fans know / accept that we need 2-3 more players....Roy Keane knows this too. But does Clegg / Evans ?

Apparantly not !

A little upset he hasn't got those "MAD" dreds he had at Swansea...

Looks at absolute unit though, and will do fantastic for us im sure! Number 10 being handed to you too is an instance boost for a new signing! Come on Jason!

PS: This will be the only period in my life where I will cheer for "Scotland" - IF you know what I mean
