Keane Pleased to Progress But Town Could Have Played Better
Keane Pleased to Progress But Town Could Have Played Better
Tuesday, 24th Aug 2010 22:54

Boss Roy Keane felt Town could have played better but was pleased to see his side progress into round three of the Carling Cup after beating Crewe 1-0 after extra time at Gresty Road.

Keane said: “The performance could have been better, but we know what these cup games are like, even in my short period at the club.

“It’s about getting through to the next round and we’ve done that tonight without playing particularly well. I made one or two changes, we got a good goal and we’re just glad to be through.”

The Blues boss was impressed with Dario Gradi’s League Two team: “Credit to Crewe. They were very good technically and physically they were very strong, so it was a good test for us.”

Keane says it’s been a difficult beginning to 2010/11 with four of the first five games away from home, two going to extra time: “We’ve had a tough start to the season with a lot of away games. We’ll look forward now to playing at home on Saturday.

“Tomorrow, Thursday and Friday we’ll do very little with the players, it’ll be about recovery and getting ready for Saturday, and then after that we’ve got lads away on international duty.

"It’s been a tough start to the season and some of the boys have shown good character tonight.”

The Town manager was pleased with new signing Jason Scotland’s performance from the bench: “I thought he did very well, he wasn’t supposed to play for that long. The plan was to give him 45 minutes but he did well,

"He showed some good signs and he’ll be better for the game because I don’t think he’s played too much football over the last month or two with the speculation.

“I’m not sure he’s played much in pre-season, so I’m sure he’ll be tired tonight, like a lot of our players.”

Keane, whose side now go into Saturday’s Carling Cup third round draw, was unaware of any new injuries after the game.

4 wins out of 5 (1 minute away from 5 out of 5), 1st time in the clubs history that we've won the 1st 4 away games in a season and we have finally signed a good striker with a good record in Jason Scotland. Add that to being in the 3rd round of the cup, getting rid of a lot of the players in the sqaud who needed to go and the other good signings such as Marton Fulop and Mark Kennedy and you have to say it has been a fantastic start to the season! It is definitly much more than I even dreamed of and If we beat Bristol City on Saturday then it will be the best 1st month of a season I can remember. Now lets PLEASE GET SOME FANS DOWN TO PORTMAN ROAD ON SATURDAY! I'm fed up of going to a game when we play quite well but theres always less than 20,000 and very rarely an atmosphere. This is the start we dreampt off and if we give all our support to the team they may just pull off something special this season! COYB's! KEANO etc etc

Priskin played really well according to the beat on radio suffolk, would be interested to hear what fans who went to the game have to say.

I agree with big foot and dan. Probably not a pretty game today but 4 wins (all away), one tie (against Burnley), Wickham, Kennedy, Delaney and Civelli to return, Scotland to get match fit, Priskin to show us what he is really capable of plus a couple of new signings is a very good place to be.

UP THE TRACTOR BOYS!

SouperJim - Priskin had a good first half playing in the centre, but seemed to drift out of the game when moved out to the left side. O'Conner also had a very lively first half in a more forward left sided role, but my motm would have to be between McCauley (won everything in the air) and Murphy.

Yep, great start although i'm nervous that when every week goes by and there still no cover of any real pedigree for Norris and Leadbitter in the middle. Give me a veteran like Nicky Butt (all be it on low wages!).

Have you not seen Hyam? the lad is a better prospect than Wickham but of course does not get the publicity of a centre forward.

I'd just like to say that although Murphy has had his number 1 place taken away from him he still showed us a very professional attitud and in my eyes was MOTM if not very close with Macca.
It actually felt like we have a squad that really want to play for the club and are all willing to fight for there places rather than think there name is on the team sheet already like i felt they did last season....... Well done Lads it's good to see and also well done the Management i.e Keano and the coaches (Not Clegg) for at last getting the Boys playing like a team.......

Good times!!!!

not a great game ,but, in cup games against low league oppo's i think sometimes where people expect the top team [as in higher league] to trounce the lower, they are more worried about losing. It then becomes a bit tense. However,we progress, and for once i thought Priskin looked useful, tho didnt find net, and against league two opp. Hoping for three points Saturday COYB

A good victory and very pleased we have gone through. Not ideal having an extra 30 minutes but there we go. COYB!

Went to the game. Hyam looked excellent in that holding position and we definitely missed him in the second half. Top players for me Murphy, McCauley and Norris. And ODea in the first half. Priskin showed good touches but lacks energy and commitment. You'd never back him to win a 50-50 ball. He's just too "soft" in my opinion - can't see him being first choice barring injuries. Scotland looked promising given he's not fully match fit. Plenty of strength and power, good positional play and lay offs. Pleased we won. Let's get our first home
win on Saturday!

Perhaps i have a downer on Priskin ,but i dont think he did well ,he didnt look like scoring worked a lot less than Stead has done and was not even in it when moved out wider and didnt seem bothered . If he doesnt look like scoring against Div 2 opposition why will Keane persist with him ,he has had a lot of chances since signing and i think the whole fact Keane was picking Stead a player he knew was leaving above Priskin says it all ,with Scotland in and Wickham on the way back and i am sure another arrival i dont think Priskin will get many more games, hopefully he will prove me wrong but i am doubtful

I noticed Pablo and Garvan got a run out for Palace. Pabs got pulled off about mid way through. Garvan scored one of his penalties after extra time. No real surprises or loss to us there then. Walters, as mentioned scored for Stoke. Good on him, hope he's happy there. Shame on the manner of his exit through.

Good to see another win under our belts and Roy's development of Iron Man football - Having a squad of players who (whilst all specialists in their positions) can be moved around the field to do a different job.

That's going to be very important with such a thin squad.

hope we didnt waste good players on another mickey mouse game its a long season and the first 14 - 15 should not be involved in these type of games

Went to the game last night. It's the first time I've seen this years team live. Macauley was outstanding as was Murphy. Overall conclusion was that if Norris and Leadbitter can stay fit, then we stand a decent chance this season. Hoping for an away draw against a West Mids club so I can pop along. Shropshire is a really long way from Suffolk.

It was an important win but lets not get carried away. It is still early doors and our season could still disintegrate quickly. Let us hope we can continue this fortuitious start, as we are still very thin on the ground in terms of squad numbers and injuries.
