Clegg: Managers Need Time
Clegg: Managers Need Time
Wednesday, 25th Aug 2010 16:06

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he and owner Marcus Evans realise managers often need time in order to build a team. Blues boss Roy Keane endured a tricky first season at Portman Road but received the backing of Evans and his chief executive.

Clegg said: “Marcus Evans and myself discussed the situation but we believe that Roy Keane is the man to take this club forward.

“He is doing all that is possible to identify the changes that were necessary and the team is playing differently this season. It takes time for a manager to build the side he wants and to play the way that he wants.

“We have a perfect example of that in the way Sir Bobby Robson was given a number of years to prove himself. But of course it is important that we do well this season — without any doubt.”

Earlier in the week, Clegg dismissed suggestions of tensions between him and Keane over transfers.

ChambersM - have you been able to post anything positive? 4 away wins in a row - first time EVER for the club. 7 points out of 9. AND STILL you slate the manager. I have said it before and will say it again - this pain is not good for you - why not go away and support another club? This is all too painful for you. So much hate. So much pain. It's not worth it!

Admittedly we need one or two more players. However, as i've noted before; we cannot be held to ransom by players nor their clubs. ITFC is a business, there is no endless pot of money.

When they release the financial statements each year, the same people moaning about this situation will undoubtedly be the same people enraged that the club makes a significant loss, and will no doubt turn to Clegg and look for answers as to why he can't run a football club!

Clearly, Keane needs backing. Clearly, he is frustrated.. many are.. but I don't believe that that frustration is anything other than general. Sometimes clubs have a certain reality to accept. This is ours, it's still very positive, far more positive than most even - but throwing toys out of prams seems.. futile.. naive.

Honestly, if there is a single area that I would be knocking on Mr Evan's door requesting budget, then it is to improve, and grow the scouting network promptly. It's truly important.

Clegg you really are a wally, yes they do need time which has been given and now is starting to the fruits of it but you as a chief exec arent doing your job and have suddenlly found your voice over the past few days.Is that cause we have played 5 games and are doing great on a threadbare squad that wouldnt be in such a state if you got off your bottom and showed the ambition of the board and Mr Evans and sanctioned at least four decent permanent transfers which are needed for the manager and his players to sustain the good results or do we have a man in charge that hasnt the bottle for the premiership and is happy to trollop around in the championship.Speak out Mr Clegg about why we have signed so little and also to what extent financially Mr Evans is prepared to back our great manager in the transfer market.Otherwise stop playing mind games making out that your a great fella and its up to Roy after this.

I would just make one comment - Alan Curbishley can only remain available for so long. Him, along with Matty Hollland, are proper football people.

And personally I would also prefer to owe the bank £ 40 million rather than Marcus Evans. At least the bank can never +%^& off, it is in their interest to support the club for any chance of getting their money back.

If Evans is a true businessman wouldn't he sell the advertising space on the front of the shirts to the biggest bidder rather than have his name on the front of the shirt. He is in it for one reason, Marcus Evans - and when he is bored with that we are in the deepest poo poo ever.

The club has been in trouble since Sheepshanks stated that our new stands were being financed in a similar method to Leeds, and followed that by allowing the purchase and contracts of George and Sereni.

Too late now but what we should have done is got the council to help us out when they wanted us to move to the Airport so they could develop the area. We could have insisted on compensation, worked with the developers of the Portman Road replacement for long term revenue chains and got a nice new ground almost rent free.

Roy keane is the luckiest man in football to still have a job! He was a disgrace last season and despite the good start I still want the thug gone! I wasn't saying we should have gone up last year but the fact is we were in a better position with Jim and a weaker squad!

Oh come on and dont tell us were being held to ransome? An Idiot would see something is going on with the ever so quiet ME whos mouthpiece is Clegg who has done nothing and said nothing till the past week when were on the back of a few results, with what is happening and the way most potential new signings are saying in the national press that they have been messed around coming to ipswich to discuss terms it really looks like Marcus is doing the bollcus and were bidding farewell to the so called saviour who got bored and is hoping for a bid to come in while we still have a high profile with Keane in charge and do a runner with a few quid in his back pocket. He hasnt done anything this Summer to show ambition ,who agrees??????

Clog knows even less about football than Evans. He's just reading from a script. It's embarrassing. He was a typical media appointment, just like the thug was. Go back to athletics!!! Football would be better off without you!

I am flabergasted at some of the comments that have been posted on here. There have been some insightful posts and you can tell the true fans.

And then you have the utter drivel from "so-called" fans like Chambersm and kerryblue that just don't warrant being put up here except to highlight their stupidity.

I bet you are part of a large group of the "Fans" (I call you fans because you are no supporters of this club), that lived in the area saw a club doing pretty well back in the late 90's and then jumped on the premiership bandwagon. You are a disgrace. You are like little sheep being herded by the media.

Some comment - Does it show evans has ambition, - well the fact that he is securing the Clubs future with getting rid of the dead wood shows he cares and shows he is here for the long haul.

What would you rather do, spend a stupid amount of money get promotion, have a couple of big teams come to Portman Road so you can have a nice day out and sit in silence all game and then do a portsmouth or worse a chester? and quite frankly I question whether you would actually care, I doubt it.

Keane, Clegg and Evans are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't.

I for one would like to see new players in, However it not that easy.
Look at Bellamy 85k a week Murphy 25k a week one a very good player and could do us a job the other an average player and no better than what we have.

My point being we are not Man City, Chelsea etc we get gates of around 20,000 and we cant afford these players. We need to look at lower leagues.
When we do and we get Healy, Quinn, Lisbie, etc but the fans then slag them off, look at the stick Miller got.
So the fans moan because we are not paying 4 million and possible 25k a week for Chopra but they will then moan if we buy Smith for 50k and pay him 5k a week.
But its a striker and its a transfer!!!!!!!!
So why buy a player we cant afford or buy a player who will not improve the squad!!!!

IRWR- re :your comment . Calling Keane a thug is hardly disrespectful looking at his playing and managerial record . It is accurate if not an understatement !
He also does not have the correct / required managerial qualities due to his erratic ,surly and tempermantal personality.

With the very differing types of successful managers, personality methods ect. I wonder Kent blue, just what is the correct / required management qualities you refer too?

kentblue added 10:16 - Aug 26
Wickets - most, if not all successful managers gain/have the respect of all their players/ supporters . The best managers are generally consistent in their behaviour towards players and encourage and bring out the best in them - settled teams with players knowing where they stand.. Roy Hodgson managed to " overachieve " at Fulham by doing the above . Wenger manages to bring out the best in all his players .

MMMMM Interesting so would you say this is the way all managers have to work to your agenda above?
