Keane Set for New Deal?
Keane Set for New Deal?
Sunday, 29th Aug 2010 10:18

Town have begun discussions with boss Roy Keane regarding a contract extension, according to a report in one of Sunday’s papers. Keane’s current deal is up at the end of the season.

The club are said to be ready to offer Keane a two-year extension to his current Portman Road contract on improved terms.

Earlier in the week chief executive Simon Clegg said that talks regarding the former Ireland skipper’s future would take place at a later date: “At some stage before the end of the season we will sit down and have a discussion with the manager.

"Without any doubt he loves living in this part of the world and as I have said before he is the man that the owner and myself believe can take this club forward.”

no point in chop and changing the manager so if he's willing.. keep him! next manager will just do the his own thing anyway and take another 2 maybe 3 seasons to get it the way he wants.

awesome that scotland scored yesterday!!! and also that priskin found the net!

I'm struggling personally to understand fully how what Keane is bringing can be so overlooked. He has come in and is one of the few managers in the game able to remedy the ITFC squad issue that we were completely encumbered by.

He has ruthlessly purged a raft of players most managers at this level would be too scared to get rid of, for each of those player's peculiar attributes [where in reality, Keane know's they're miles away from Premiership standard or even Championship winning ability].

Keane is honest, matter of fact and effective; he's not messing about.

My only doubts about him revolve around his ability to pull modern players, though I believe may change now that results have at least started going our way; and then only mild concerns about the style of play. The qualification on the latter point is only Mowbray (West Brom) and Burley (us) have ever managed pleasing football at this level that I can recall.

I believe Keane is still an investment.

I think the contract question is generally better asked two months from now in the next International Break - purely because there is no need to upset anything, at the moment.

I also think this is paper talk : P

This is just pure media speculation, something picked up by the nationals on what was said by Clegg earlier in the week. Personally, I believe we should wait until January before discussing a new deal with Keane. By this time we will have a better idea of where the team is going!

I would wait a bit longer before offering a new contract. Bright start to the season, COYB!

after being so cautious with money over the summer, I can't believe we would offer RK a new contract now. ME seemed pretty determined that there were 2 years to make a promotion challenge, and that was why he had a 2 year contract, no reason to change that plan now.

Realistically, no one is going to start knocking on RK's door for a bigger job until he gets us in serious promotion contention anyway.

p.s. ChambersM - I totally agree with Tom_The_Blue; I am afraid it is very difficult to take you seriously. All you do is moan. Fair enough if you don't like Roy - but refusing to comment when we do well and then demand RK is sacked after a poor result doesn't add up. Take a leaf out of H32's book - not a Roy fan, but always willing to give credit where it is due. By moaning and refusing to say anything positive, you really do come across as not being a Town fan. Hopefully 99% of people on here will ignore your negativity if you can't find anything positive to say.

Chambers M, I think you will find it is you who knows nothing about football since the comment regarding play-off form is spot on! If there was a league table starting October 31st 2009 (The date of our first win) you would find that at the end of the season we would have finished joint 6th! Therefore the comment about us being play-off form since winning for the first time last season is FACT not bollocks! I respect your opinion and If you don't like Keane that is fair enough however please when he actually does well for us give him and the players the praise they deserve.

Also Chambers M, I understand that last year the football was atrocious to watch but like I said earlier bottom line is that it was play-off form if not play-off style. At least this year I am excited about going to watch us!

"Roy Keanes days were looking numbered only a few weeks ago"....really? To whom? one or two knee jerk fans on here?

This Club will always give it's manager time to do the job. That is what's wrong with football today.....this fundemental urge to hire n fire at the drop of a hat. Clubs that generally do well, are those that offer stability to the manager and allow him (whoever it is) time to do the job he was brought in to do !

Mr Evans ! If you are reading this , give Roy Keane and 4 yr contract !

Can't see this being true to be honest. It would make sense to wait until later in the season but we do need the continuity. He has such a young squad there that maybe giving ourselves another year or two before we expect promotion would be a good thing. Let the lads develop under his management and we could be on to a winner.

people on here calling for 4 year contracts and all that are mental, frankly. It's not like RK has been so successful that we can be certain he'll lead us for years to come. Why on earth would we set ourselves up for a big hit in the event that we have to sack him eventually? This is how football clubs get themselves in problems, desperately trying to hold onto people by throwing money we can't afford at them. Look at Liverpool and Benitez. They gave him 6 years when they should've said, we'll offer you 2 and if you don't like it, walk.

I just don't understand this need to overstate RK's achievement, to demand that he's still in place for years to come, when there's little evidence to support it. It stinks of being more interested in "Keano" succeeding than the long-term future of the club.

Results of our last 36 games...

W:15 - D:13 - L:8 = 58 Points

Those results carried over 46 games would translate to 74 points = PLAY OFF FORM

We've managed that without playing particularly well over the whole of that period, and with less-than-prolific strikers. Both these problems are being addressed, and we've managed to rack up some good results in the first month of the season despite injuries / suspensions, and an exodus of players.

There are clearly some that don't want RK in charge under any circumstances; my view is that purely for the job he's done in sorting out the wheat from the chaff from the squad he inherited (most of whom had a whole season to prove themselves to him), he deserves to be offered his new contract a.s.a.p.

Fully agreed.....Mr Evans , sign him up ....FOUR YEAR CONTRACT PLEASE !!!

kentblue added 16:19 - Aug 29
Don't do it ! A few good results so far - this does NOT warrant a new deal . Look what happened with Capello . He was given a new deal and was/is a complete disaster as England manager . Keane needs to prove himself over a period of time and only then should extension of contract be considered.

eastblue added 16:37 - Aug 29
Sign him up! We'll never have success if we keep changing managers!

Far too early. Good managers, some of whom are properly qualified are always available. Some of them at a percentage of the price.

I for one hope Keane is given a new deal and stays at the club for a long time ala Burley and Robson. I like the no-nonsense man management, i like the no-nonsense press interviews and i like the way we have a great blend of youth and experience in the team and are now looking very hard to breakdown.
I also like the competition for places and that there's no rotation rubbish going on. Yes we're short of a few, a striker maybe and definitely cover in midfield and right back.

For those who seem to believe Keane has spent a fortune already, well, that's not necessarily the case. We've shelled out in the region of about 8.75million but then recouped 5 million of that in sales since he's been here (Walters, Haynes, Garvan, Stead, Bruce, Shumi and Rhodes). I count about 12 in and 20 out since he's been here so the wage bill will have been cut.
Fairly sure no-one in their right mind can argue that the quality we have for that extra 3.75million or so has been worth the investment (Lee Martin clearly the only bad buy for the price tag to date...).

I think the board would have looked at the first 10 games of this season to make a call as we all predicted. Won 5 out of 6, still unbeaten and looking comfortable. So, all-in-all...new deal please before someone else moves in.

hahaha, listen to yourself keaneish, what club on the planet is going to "move in" and take RK after winning 3 league games and 2 cup-ties against lower-league opposition. What the hell is wrong with looking after the resources at the club sensibly?

Keanish. As soon as we get loanies in there will be rotation to protect the youngsters, according to kean.
