Town to Renew McPhail Move Next Week
Town to Renew McPhail Move Next Week
Wednesday, 1st Sep 2010 09:07

Town are likely to renew their attempts to sign Cardiff City midfielder Stephen McPhail on loan when the ‘emergency window’ opens next Tuesday, according to reports in Wales. The Blues are understood to have been trying to get the deal done before the transfer window closed yesterday.

Meanwhile, chief executive Simon Clegg has reiterated that money will be available to manager Roy Keane for strengthening, but that there is not a limitless supply of cash.

Clegg told the club site: "After the excellent start to the season we will continue to cautiously build the squad to fit the vision of the manager within a reasonable budget.

"Any club can simply throw endless amounts of money at the transfer market but firstly it is no guarantee of success and secondly it simply undermines the financial viability of the business.

"We are fortunate to have such a committed and generous owner, but a very high priority for this club is to ensure that we do not get ourselves into the same position we have been in before, a position experienced by other Championship clubs last season and which I fear we will see again in the not so distant future."

would be a very good addition to the squad but i would still prefer a defensive midfielder through the door, as hymm is still very young.

If you're good enough, you're old enough.

bluelady before you blame mr clegg what club in there rite mind would sign a player on loan and pay his wages when we dont have a game for nearlly two weeks. Makes sence to have a chat with him then complete deal when loan window opens.

It frustrates me that you say "Mr Clegg failed to get it sorted", we have no idea or concept of all the variables involved in these deals. Look at the number of players travelling up and down the country yesterday to get deals done, that went straight back home (Babel), and all the last minute changes that clubs/players want to make to the deals (N'Zogbia).
Unless you have all the facts not sure you can level this straight at Cleggs door, though it does frustrate me that ITFC seem to drag their heels, i would rather than than pay over the odds for a player who really doesn't wanna come here, I.E. Liam Lawrence who quite clearly did not want to go to Portsmouth then suddenly changed his mind, hmmm wonder how much that cost Stoke!!

Well Mr Clegg two of the sides throwing money at signings are QPR and Cardiff who are top with us so lets hope we can continue to live with them .
And if money was tight why didnt you say so before the season tickets and transfer window had shut rather than say how we would sign 4 or 5 players . Agree with not putting the club into trouble obviously but an honest approach over the transfers would have been better

Sucro72 totally agree with you - we had raised expectations the promise of 3 or 4 players and nothing materialised which gives the impression that we are unable to sign players....... i do also agree that this is a business and we need to be prudent, i would really not like to be Cardiff where ever they stand in the league i dont agree with their ethics at all! Steed i also do agree with what you say about this player, i was just being slightly ironic thats all. I love the fact that our players seem to want to play for us now and give whole hearted performances, i was mearly referring to Keanes comments about a number of players who wanted to play for us but for one reason or another did not get a deal sorted..

Tractorroy are you saying Mr Holloway is a much better manager than Roy because he didnt spend any money and Roy has had to spend £10 million to get us where we are ?

doesn't sound good...

Bluelady, I do believe you are Tractorgirl in disguise. My memory is that we have signed at least six players this close season - Fulop, Scotland, Kennedy, Townsend, O'Dea and Hourihane.

surco... boro are the biggest spenders and are no where to be seen we were big spenders last year and clegg isnt saying money is tight he is saying they want to spend sensibly there is a difference to mney being tight and not wanting to be reckless.
Also no one was promised 3 or 4 players .. Roy keane said he feels he needs 3 or 4 more players its no ones fault but your own if you had raised expectations for the transfer market.

When he's fit, McPhail is one fo the best passing midfielders in the Championsip. He works hard too, which suits Keane's ethos. Although he would be better in the more advanced Norris or Leadbitter roles, I have no doubt that he could also fill in for Hyam in the anchor role.

I'm intrigued to see which Premiership players are left out of the 25 man squads. We still need a creative wideman imo to play on the left. Andy Reid was mooted yesterday and I won't mention a certain Spurs player's name!!! Priskin looked uncomfortable there and only really came into the game against BC when he played up top with JS as a front two. Townsend has shown flashes of brilliance but I don't like the idea of relying on a teenager.

Peters has been excellent at right back but who would replace him if he were to get injured or suspended? Ainsley is unproven and Brown looks far more assured at CB.

He would only be back up so there is no point having him for a few weeks .
He would not go ahead of Leadbitter , Norris ,Hyam ,Townsend , or Edwards on current form.
Also every year we all forget that the emergency transfer window is only 93 days max so most clubs look to the end of the 93 days and look at their fixtures (xmas /new year)
We have 4 games in a week ending with Forest at home on 3rd Jan , so take 93 days away and that is when we will be signing anyone on loan ;-)

Why would we want to 'live with QPR and Cardiff'
I'd lay money that we finish above one or both those clubs come the end of the season and anyway they are hardly shining examples of how to run clubs.
One has had more managers in a season than most manage in a decade and the other are skint and teetering on the brink of administration.
I'tll all end in tears and meanwhile we will tread carefully and hopefully be successful with foundations to build on.
In Keano and Clegg we trust.

superfranz i dont want to be predantic but it was after this that the promise of 3 or 4 players came i.e a midfielder, striker (which we got), RB..... i am well aware of who we have bought! Grief it was only a light hearted message :-)

Generous owner my arse, if he was generous he would have given us the walters money, also is this McPhail even any good, or will he be another Martin.

Keane foolishly said we dont need a right back, he was wrong.

btw anyone now how Hurihane (not sure if i spelt that wrong) is shaping up? havent seen anything of him since the Spurs game. He looked ok then. He could potentially offer some cover and so could Alan Quinn when fit. Ok so not a player to set the world alight but for me much better than Healy?

DanLyles added 12:08 - Sep 1
I agree with you regarding Quinn bluelady. He is the forgotten man of Portman Road. When he played centrally (and not out of position on the left under Magilton) he always looked to have great energy and his distribution wasn't bad. If Norris or Leadbitter were to get injured then I would be happy to see Quinn come in for a couple of games and be confident that he would do a job. Healy is no where near good enough to wear our colours. McPhail, Quinn and Hourihane would be excellnet back up to Norris, Leadbitter and Hyam.

Although I agree that we shouldn't be throwing money everywhere, I hate how Clegg always calls ITFC a business, sooner than calling it a football club.

Blue92 Have you not been looking at what is happening to football these days ? All football clubs are now run as businesses with the shops , the hospitality suites , the shares in the club being trade on the stock market etc ! Our owner via SC is looking to have a self sustaining business to ensure stability and a future for the club . It is not the way it has been done in the past ( look back at previous management ) and I am not sure it is the right way of going , as football is not a typical business , but if ME wants it that way as long as the club can compete with the rest on an equal footing I will back him .

blueknight ... boro nowhere to be seen they are two wins behind us and only 4 games have been played ,bit over dramatic and surely they are in "the new players gelling stage "that i heard so much about last year .
And the three biggest spenders last season Newcastle,West Brom and us ,two of which are now Premiership ,so money does work if spent correctly and as you say not on reckless buys £1.7 on players you loan out to a lower league a year later .

And sonian blue how does changing your manager a lot affect anything Chelsea have had 4 managers in two years and are double champions because of money spent .The reason we want to live with them is that QPR ,Cardiff and Boro will all be pushing promotion at the end of the season however their clubs are run because they have depth in their squads .If Norris and Leadbitter get booked at Pompey we will be fielding the likes of Healy and Quinn against QPR and Cardiff that is the difference
