Keane Delighted With Town's Bounce Back to Form
Keane Delighted With Town's Bounce Back to Form
Saturday, 18th Sep 2010 18:32

Boss Roy Keane was delighted with his side’s performance as the Blues jumped to second in the table via a 2-0 victory over Cardiff at Portman Road. Cardiff manager Dave Jones felt Adam Matthews’s own goal was the turning point in the match.

Keane said: “I thought it was a good performance, I thought it was a good game. It was a good victory. I think we deserved it, once we got past the first 10 minutes when we were under a lot of pressure.

“I enjoyed it and the players reacted well, which I knew they would. I was pleased with the workrate, the strikers did well, the subs who came on did well, against a very good Cardiff team.

“Sometimes you can play teams at the right time and obviously Cardiff are missing some important players, but they’re still a handful and we saw that in the first 10 minutes when we looked like we were never going to get out of our box, let alone our half but we stuck at it.

“I think we did a lot of the basics wrong the other night,” he added, “but I thought we did the basics well today, in terms of defending, closing people down and hold-up play from the strikers.

“Cardiff will win loads of games in this league and we knew we’d have to be at our best today. We weren’t the other night and we got found out.”

The Blues manager was delighted with Connor Wickham’s display with the 17-year-old making his first start of the season: “Connor did well, it’s always a gamble when a player’s been out a long time and not kicked a ball in the reserves. His cameo performances last Tuesday and in the Portsmouth game have just about earned him his start.

“I think he and Jason gave us that foundation today with their workrate, their hold-up play and they often threatened.

“The keeper made a very good save from Connor in the second half. We could say he was unlucky, but I give credit to the keeper, he’s come out and made that save.”

Keane thought Wickham was unlucky not to win a spotkick when he was felled in the first period: “We were unfortunate not to get the penalty in the first half and his general play was very good but he’ll be tired for the next few days because it was a big shift for him. He was on for about 81 minutes and ideally I didn’t want to play him for that long.”

Cardiff manager Dave Jones thought the game was heading towards a goalless draw: “We started brightly. The second half wasn’t the best of games and it probably had a 0-0 look about it.

“I didn’t think they were causing us any problems and we certainly weren’t causing them problems, but you can’t give away the goal that we gave away."

Jones says own goal-scorer Adam Matthews wasn’t the only one to blame for his side’s second defeat in a week but was in no doubt that the own goal was the game’s pivotal moment: “It wasn’t just down to young Adam, other players around him didn’t step up to the plate in the second half.

“But the own goal was the turning point because it lifted everyone around the place, the crowd got behind them and they got a spring in their step.

“There’s no hiding place for anybody in this world, certainly not at this level. It’s a good job he’s a young player so he’s got a long, long time to get over it.

“It’s one of those in your career that you’ll mull over many, many times, but the one thing you can’t do is let it affect you. You can think about it and try not to make the mistake again, but we’ve not got time to mollycoddle anybody, he’s got to learn quick.”

Zippy is a retard. He delights in being negative and thinks we care about his opinions. Actually we laugh at his obvious ignorance.

Come on ChambersM - you are one of the few Keano knockers pre-season that are still posting albeit still a bit negative, surely you must be happy with the start we have had? go on say something positive about the team , I dare you....

Zippy words fail me or this is a wind up. We have now played 4 of the promotion favourites and as stated by another correspondent the hardest start to the season than any of the other Clubs. We now have a great foundation to build on unlike last season and whilst we cannot rest on our laurels at least we can enjoy where we are at the moment. A decent right back, another holding midfield player and a striker coming in then I will start to get excited. Oh and MaCauley must not get injured. Next three games will be tough make no mistake but then they all are in this division.

These are the sort of games that can make your season.First you lose 0-3 at home when the expectations are clearly getting higher after a disappointing season. The you meet another team from the top.IF you lose that game as well
selfdoubt will creep in. Now we can really make something out of this season. Need that fifth forward for cover though. Scotland-Wickham-Priskin-Murray.
That's all we have and we really need to be lucky with injuries if we plan to go through the season with that.

well done today lads,i think most town supporters were a little nervous going in to this season, although its still early its a great feeling to be up with the pace setters hope this continues,we will have blips along the way because this league is so tough, we do seem to have a bit more to the squad this year so hope most people will back the boys.coyb

I do find it surprising that people can come on here and criticise the team and a seventeen year old lad making his first start this season. Zippy has a history of negative comments and of course won't come back and defend or substatiate his comments. He'll just continue to think he could do better. ChambersM has at least answered people's responses on his comments, despite being rather negative.
Connor is 17, he will of course look a bit inexperienced at times. That will happen in particular in the air as an experienced defender will win many balls in the air using tricks they've learnt over a number of years. A wiley old striker will know these tricks and counter them if they are good enough. Connor will soon find a way of dealing with these tricks and come out the stronger. If he is out of his depth at this level, why do we have top flight clubs chasing him for £8-10mill?
The Scotland/Wickham partnership looks very good, I can see a number of goals coming from them. (Shefki/Bent... experience/youth?). I am delighted with the start we have mad and let's hope they continue to exceed our expectations.

Chambers i think Priskin looks a bit donkeyish at times and his rythym is not right yet but believe it or not he is still adapting to Ipswich style of play, maybe long balls dont suit his style and the point i want to make is if we can get a quality passer and playmaker in the middle Priskins game will improve because he looks strong and can play but i agree with a point made in a earlier post that our strikeforce still looks a little threadbare.

lunatic some fair comments and agree Chambers does substantiate his claims, and i love nothing better than a debate!!! Prisken has some lovely touches and can change a game, not sure he is one to start with each game but a great player to come on for a good 30 mins.... not sure he is happy with that though!

Excellent results lads and well done. Thought it was a good game and in the end we deserved the result.
Fulop- very solid. Every time I have seen him (even against QPR) has been a VERY good shot stopper.
Back 4- played really well. Eastman had a good game too and even surged forward a couple of times.
Leadbitter and Norris- kept it calm and kept it on the ground
Wingers- both had a great game (especially Edwards who was outstanding)
Strikers - both played well.

Priskin was a little frustrating when he came on (that pass back to Colin Healy who then striked at goal and nearly hit the corner flag for example). Peters was good.

Agree with previous post- could do with a really threatening striker to come off bench (Cardiff would normally have Chopra/Bellamy- then Boothroyd to come off bench). By the way-thought Adam Matthews was excellent (did some great runs and passes). Also headed in a goal that one of our Strikers would have been proud of-unstoppable! Haven't seen Murray or Calian Lavery play yet- could they fill the void?

Zippy, any chance you went to the game today? Granted, the first 10-15 minutes looked bleak, but from then on we were nothing short of brilliant. McAuley, a brick wall as usual, Fulop with a clean sheet, Norris being here there and every flipping where as usual, and Scotland and wickham looking a decent partnership.

Guentchev : Priskin did very well wen he came on held it up well and slowed it down, Leadbitter and Norris did not keep it on the ground cos no one did. Good result but not liking the long ball style we play cos it doesn't work and it's borin as hell to watch. No need in Keane putting in a midfield as it goes straight from defence to attack in one long 50 50 ball. Edwards and Townsend looked very promising but we desperatly need a creative midfielder and right backs!

ChambersM added 23:16 - Sep 18
'brilliant' is a HUGE overstatement. The only thing that annoys me about fulop is his distribution, refuses to play it short and therefore keeping it 'on the ground' (whcih is what we want) and there was one kick in particular where without even thinking about it he just booted it upfield to no one. And imo norris had a poor game today and i thought he was very quiet...not convinced about his effectiveness tbh, rather have garv.

Priskinsrightboot: we were not briliant, the patnership on the two strikers could show cos all we did to them was long balls with no link up play between them because of thecm style we play. Imagine if we played under Burley with our team, with stylish passing football,we could do very very well.

Chambers M : 100% agree with u there. But I think that is wat Keane was told him to do, just punt it up to Wickham and Scotland.

moomoosereni added 23:57 - Sep 18
Plus Chambers he had very little to do until towards the end and pulled off a very impressive save from close range.

Cheer up mate, I'm sure Town will buy Messi soon enough so you can finally be satisfied with something.
