Keane: It Could Have Ended 7-4
Keane: It Could Have Ended 7-4
Saturday, 30th Oct 2010 18:15

Town boss Roy Keane felt his side’s 2-0 home victory over Millwall could have ended 7-4 with both teams having plenty of opportunities to score. Lions boss Kenny Jackett thought his side were unlucky with two penalty decisions.

Keane said: “I thought it was a cracking game, both teams did well, it could have been 7-4. I thought we looked dangerous today.

“Credit to Millwall they caused us lots of problems, had high energy and a good spirit, even when we went a goal up.

“It was a pity we couldn’t have finished the game off earlier but 2-0 and a clean sheet was a good result for us. It was a good performance.

“The back four and the keeper did well and Millwall did very well too I thought, they gave us lots of problems and were unlucky not to score themselves.

“I thought we would have to play really well to get a result today and I thought the players did well.”

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett was unhappy that referee Kevin Friend failed to award a penalty when the ball struck Grant Leadbitter’s hand in the first half and thought Town’s spotkick when Danny Shittu fouled Tamás Priskin was similarly debatable: “I felt we came out on the wrong side of the penalty decisions. My first impression was that that handball was a clear penalty.

“But I’ll look at the DVD, I haven’t had an opportunity to look at it again and sometimes when you do that as a manager your viewpoint changes, but for me it was a clear penalty at the time on one look.

“The other one was similar to ours. Sometimes you see them given, sometimes you don’t and between the two of them you do get one generally.”

Keane saw things very differently: “I would disagree 100% with that. In the Coventry game we were punished when the striker got the other side of Gareth McAuley and there was a coming together. If that was a penalty against us, then that was definitely a penalty today.

“I think the handball was more ball to hand. If it had gone against us like a couple of weeks ago you wouldn’t hear me complaining about it.”

Jackett had particular praise for Town’s central defensive pairing of Gareth McAuley and Damien Delaney: “Ipswich have some power at set pieces. Their two centre-halves defended very well, headed a lot of balls out from six or seven yards out, which we have to match, whether that’s scoring goals or defending because they had opportunities from set pieces.

“We probably had the better of it in between the boxes in terms of possession and passing. We put a lot of very good balls into the goalscoring area with quality and either it didn’t break for us or their centre-halves defended very well and headed the ball out of their box.”

Fans that booed Eastman hang yours heads in shame!!

At the end of the day all he has to worry about is keane picking him for the games and he has done that so far so he must be doing something right!! I hope this doesn't distract him from his game!!

nice one boys great result keep it going. Priskin my motm.
Right I'm going to rant about those robbing scum down the road now 33 quid for derby if you buy ticket early then charging 39 quid after that . I'm sorry but that is a disgrace and they shouldn't be aloud to pump up price just because they're playing us.
Sorry I would rather give my money to an illegal imagrant than give it to them .

i have been supportive of ITFC as much as i can and i am very proud that we won on Saturday and after improving the team this season from last, getting rid of many players and bringing in new blood maybe even leaving us with a chance of the play-offs this season it is time to take stock of where we are. I cannot believe our fans are booing youngsters on the pitch (even if we were in a relegation fight i would not boo players) but i think there are some fans who see what i finally understand, is a manger who has done some good but to be really honest tactically he is very very poor. I have not jumped on keanes back at every opportunity and hopefully with the good squad that we have we might get into the playoffs but all i see is players playing out of position, wrong players for selected formations, formations that dont match the strategy of the opposition and to be really honest when we play better quality teams we get well beaten! It is ok beating the Millwalls etc but that is to be expected if we want to rub shoulders with Cardiff etc (no disrespect to Millwall) and i finally come to the conclusion that keane is not in the league of the Aidy boothroyds or mouth all mighty Neil Warnocks and if Evans wants the glory days back at Ipswich he needs to F..K Keane off.
I hated writing this as it hurts my pride but i have now seen enough to come to this conclusion whether you agree or not so i say with a passionate heart COYB!

I know he's young but can someone teach Eastman the colours and specifically what blue looks like?

Great result yesterday and I think we showed some good fight and deserved the result. I would agree with our penalty decision but think that the handball would usually be given too. About time we had a bit of luck like that though. With regard to the atmosphere I was sat in the south stand lower and was complained about due to cheering on the boys and standing up when we had a chance. I can understand not wanting people standing all the time but when the game gets exciting I expect the fans to too. Shame as I thought it was a cracking match and would just prefer to see all the fans getting behind the team.

Just to remind the handful of moaners: Your team won 2-0. I can't believe that people are moaning about a 18-year old Eastman playing in his first full season. No wonder Keane (rightly in my opinion) spoke out against some of our fans. Can we not get behind the lad and aid his confidence rather than slag him off? I think I read one post that said 4 centre halfs still isn't working - they kept a CLEAN SHEET - what more can they do to please some?! In fact what more can the club do for some to give praise for once?!!

jas0999 - there are people who post on this site who would complain if we won 10-0 every week.

COYB!

We now move onwards to Sheff Utd, who I saw yesterday, because of work committments, and were absolute garbage, with the exception of Andy Reid. They have no confidence, hoof the ball at every opportunity and the crowd were slaughtering them. Let's take advantage of that and give them the good hiding that we should have done last season.

We won 2-0 and thats the most important thing. If we had lost the knives would really have been out and the pressure would have been on next week. I think this was a pivotal result in our season however it was achieved, and if we can get a point next week and win the 2 home games who knows what we can achieve. One thing that is absolutely clear is the effect the absence of O'Dea has on the team. It is not Eastmans nor Smiths fault that they are playing full back but they are not up to the mark I'm afraid and our forward play is restricted with long balls continually being pumped forward by both of these players. On the plus side they are both good in the air but we need at least one raiding full back. Taking all things into consideration I thought this was an excellent result against a very useful Millwall side and to all the moaners just count the number of chances we created as we could have had 6 or 7. A word for Mr. Friend the Referee he certainly was our friend in this match.

The fact is we rely completely on the centre backs, smith and eastman were continuously getting caught out and millwall were putting numerous balls into the box from the by-line and it was GM and DD that were always clearing it out

Well i thought it was an open entertaining game and fair play to Millwall for coming and making a game of it. Perhaps that was Priskins best performance in a Town shirt and that should help him along as he is clearly a confidence player. Can't believe the sniping about the youngsters who are being played out of position and are still very much learning their trade.Remember the reserve league thing is rubbish and they have been thrown in at the deep end. Let's give them a break.

Whatever about his footballing limitations as a full back, Eastman is now performing better than any others who have been tried in the RB position this season, and if a specialist RB is not being signed, he should be given a good run there. To those who are saying players like him should be played only in their natural position, I dont agree. The centre back position demands experience, and there are good experienced centre backs in the team. It is very common to blood a young CB at full back, and for me he can make a player and eventually fill the McAuley role at RCB. He seems like someone who will learn. Smith now has a fair bit of experience, but still unsure about his reading of the game. Peters is just not a defender by instinct.

There are now some good partnerships developing, Priskin/Scotland, Wickham/Murray (who in my opinion should now always be introduced together), McAuley/Delaney. The squad on paper isn't top six material, but because of the improved form of the strikers, and the development of the youngsters, could well get there.

4 centre halves = clean sheets well how mad is this wot u got to remember is wiv mcauley and delaney playin well it can only make eastman and smith stronger as keane has said they have not let the team down so i think we will trust keano on this one coz im sure his more qualified at this than any 1 that has been booing these players plus portman road yesterday was like a morgue town score big noise then boom nothing so turn the boos into cheers and be heard sort it out fans quickly

Three things

1. We got away with it. A better team than Millwall would have beaten us yesterday. Even their own supporters recognised that they did not have enough class or quality to win it on the day. Remember though that this was a League 1 team last year and one that we would have expected to beat if we were to be serious challengers for promotion.

2. While booing of younger players is not to be condoned it is inevitable that anyone who wears the shirt will be expected to meet required standards. Younger players are going to come up short sometimes and it is part of the education process to be on the wrong end of criticism. It was ever thus; I have seen a young Terry Butcher verbally abused, Alan Brazil, Mick Stockwell and more recently Owen Garvan. It may be unwelcome but it's always going to happen. If they're any good the players will develop regardless. As it happens I believe our younger players have huge support, much more than young players blooded by the so-called bigger teams where expectations are crippling.
3. A couple of weeks back RK told us that we were not a team that could score masses of goals but that we could be relied on to score one at home. Now he tells us we could have scored seven yesterday. In my view this is not something to be commended. The finishing yesterday was appalling and in a couple of cases was totally unacceptable for a professional football club. We don't score enough goals at the best of times; to waste the clear chances that presented themselves was not simply down to bad luck but more to sheer ineptitude. This is something that needs to be addressed. All the strikers had chances but failed in an environment where to anyone watching 'fill your boots' was the order of the day.

All in all my view is we got the result, a hotch pot of performances and no clear indication of what to expect in the future.

Nice to see us trying to play the ball on the ground when possible. Nice to see 2 up front. Nice to see Priskin begin to show some class and nice to see a decent result.

The game was hardly compelling though, we still lack the ability to retain possession, the interplay is still severely lacking (too many times players are being caught stranded with the ball without options). And why did we play with no width?

I like Colback but he's a central midfielder, not a winger. Square pegs do not go into round holes. I think Townsend has been a lot of bluster with little finish so far, but I would certainly persist with him. Defenders, especially in this division, hate a player who will run at you and take you on. And he's young enough to improve.

Anyway, I hope that was a sign of things to come, and not a blip. Please persist with 2 up front Keane, but please play full backs not central defenders - what has Peters done wrong? He's been excellent. If he's been a little short defensively (literally!) then why not swap Edwards and Peters over? Edwards has played many games at full back in his career.

And I hope O'Conner is injured because if not I'd be really annoyed to see Smith ahead of me. I like Smith, but he's not a full-back. Mind you, Kennedy has done nothing for me this season other than look as old as he is. He offers nothing going forward at all, so if that's the other option I'd rather see Smith who is at least young and improving.

foster i think you will find thats Scotlands style of play, he is a fox in the box and not a runner - he was like it at Swansea too, always looks a little overweight, but get the ball at his feet and he will get goals!
