Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Saturday, 11th Dec 2010 18:07

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues were again made to pay for their failure to take their chances as his side slid to their sixth successive league defeat at Preston. Iain Hume’s second half strike gave the Lilywhites a 1-0 victory at Deepdale.

Keane said: “The first half was fine, no problem, but the game is 90-odd minutes long. We had good possession, we got into threatening positions, particularly in the first half and at the start of the second, but we don’t seem to be capable of scoring many goals, and that puts you under pressure constantly."

The Blues manager felt his side gifted the opposition another poor goal: “Repeating myself once again, we gave a soft goal away. It’s not as if teams are opening us up. After that we huffed and puffed without having that quality in the final third to get us back in the game.

“The second half performance was a bit disjointed. Once they’d got the goal they had something to hold on to, but we always expect more from the players, whether that’s in terms of creating that chance, that bit of quality, when in shooting positions hitting the target.

“But that’s been going on for a few months now, even last year. We don’t score many goals. Whether we play one up front or two up front, we don’t seem to have that little bit of quality in the box. And that’s the hardest part of football.”

Keane says there is no issue with his players’ application: “There’s no problem with the commitment and effort and possession, but you’ve got to score goals, and we don’t score enough of them.

“That’s nine defeats in 11 now and at any level in any league, in any country that is not good enough.”

The Irishman, showing signs of the return of the beard he sported during his latter days at Sunderland, still feels he can turn things around at Town but conceded that whether he will be able to is ultimately not up to him: “That’s out of my hands, don’t ask me questions I’ve got no control over.”

Preston manager Darren Ferguson, whose father Sir Alex was in the crowd, was pleased with the three points despite a poor beginning to the game: “We started really slowly, we couldn’t keep the ball well enough and they penned us in a little bit. It was a slow start and a nervy start.

“But we got a spell at the end of the first half of about 10 minutes where we got a lot of corners on the bounce and in the second half it was far, far better.

“I had to have a bit of a go at them at half-time, but they responded. We played really, really well in the first 20 minutes of the second half and that alone was enough to win us the game.”

As for Keane's current predicament, Ferguson said: “I don’t have to worry about Roy, he’s a very, very strong character. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

I amongst many have been questioning RKs tactics and selections and believe that he has not got long to go as manager if he does not start getting results.

However, the article in todays Daily Telegraph is perhaps worth considering before we sack another manager. Comments by Sir Alex Ferguson 'Great clubs need continuity'. He says he survived his bad start at Man U with support from within the club. ie Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton. The presence of these two gentlemen are given credit for letting him ride out the storm of his early years at Man U. The article goes on to say that his early years were marked by turbulence, underachievement and, at their nadir, the prospect that a defeat in an FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest in Jan 1990 would cost him his job after just over 3 years in charge. Man U won at Forest and the rest is history.

Ferguson says that it is time for chairman and directors to play the long game. A lot of clubs will realise that giving their managers a length of time works.

Is it possible that we are all wrong and keeping RK could turn us into another Man U?

May be I am reading too much into this but very strange that at 22:40 on a saturday match day the clubs sms service have not sent out a Roy Says.... Txt message. I am a true blue and will always support this great club and until recently I have supported Mr Keane.

This farce must come to an end Marcus Evans is a very shrewd business man and I honestly believe a true blue and he must be hurting just as much as us probably more because of the money. Its time to say ouch pay the 2,000,000 to get rid and move on even if that means the new manager has 2mil less to spend in January. He needs to forget this season get a strong manager in who I truely believe would with the current squad avoid relegation and bild for the future..

Dear Santa I have been a really good girl this year and I just wondered if that means you will get me what I really would like for Christmas, I don't wish for much, it won't cost you a penny and will make thousands of people happy. please can you make sure when I go to see my beloved football team on boxing day that we have a new manager who knows what the f**k he is doing? Sorry to use such a naughty word but as you can tell this Christmas wish means a great deal to me yours very hopeful.

Hughton!!!! Really?! I know he did a good job at Newcastle but the players he inherited were not too shabby and he let the players pick the team each week.

My choice would be Sean O'Driscoll - manager who believes in playing football the right way and done an amazing job at Donnie Rovers. I just want to see our team play good footbal - it's our heritagel. It feels like we are re-living the Duncan years all over again (except it's worse).

Unfortunately, if Evans did get rid of Keane, he would go for another high profile gobsh*te just so his brand can be displayed on Sky Sports News everyday. Robbie Savage anyone?

To those who say it "takes time" and great managers struggled to start well in their early management years at a club etc etc that is true, Alex Ferguson, Bobby Robson and probably many more had similar career starts at certain clubs, Ipswich included. But i find it very hard to compare Keane to this scenario because you just know in your heart whether a manager can become good (whether results are going your way or not) by the style of football played by his team and the player selection, player confidence attitudes and tactics. You could like the style of your team and become passionate in your support because your team are having a go tactically as well as effort even though results are sometimes frustrating, this is not so at Ipswich. Players try but they look like headless chickens to say the least, boring, predictable, formation very bizarre at times but substitutions and signings are an absolute joke. This is not something we must be patient with any more! 18 months and any one who knows football knows that the current manager will not come good, he would not even get us promoted from division 1 next year (and i am not over reacting), that is where we are going with our current form and squad/team selection and tactics. This could become a horror show if action is not taken before xmas, please please remove Keane before he gets more money to waste in the new year and hammer more nails into our coffin. If we sign a new manager before xmas, we have the financial clout (gonna cost Evans but serves him right for sticking with Keane for too long) to sign one or two players in january and at least keep us in the Championship. I am very confident he will be gone soon but the question is, with a NUMPTY like Clegg who we gonna get to replace Keane and the whole current coaching staff?
Me personally, NOT Curbishly you need some one who is in management or recently been in management and i dont think any carlos vandango foreign managers neither because who ever it gonna be they are going to inherit a seriously sh*t situation at first!

Why does everyone want Hughton all of a sudden? I want someone with more experience. Hughton hasn't had long as a solo manager and that was quite a talented squad he got promoted. Not for me.

Just come in and watched the X Factor, which I had recorded. I see that Cher is out. How about replacing RK with her, Mr Evans? She has a very high profile and let's face it, results can't be worse than thesy are at the moment !!!
