Keane: If My Best Isn't Good Enough I'll Take the Consequences
Keane: If My Best Isn't Good Enough I'll Take the Consequences
Tuesday, 4th Jan 2011 01:37

Blues boss Roy Keane says he will have to accept the consequences if his best endeavours prove not to be good enough for Town owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg. The Blues are only three points away from the relegation zone after yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat to Keane’s first English club Nottingham Forest.

Asked whether he was concerned about his position the Town manager, who was involved in frank exchanges of views with Blues' fans both behind the dug-out and on the way to the tunnel at the end of the match, said: “My job is not important. What we have to do is to try and do our best for the football club.

“It’s not about me. The club is bigger, it’s had some great managers. We’ve got a manager here now, I’m trying to learn my trade, I’m doing my best and if my best isn’t good enough, then I’ll take the consequences.

“I don’t expect you to be giving me phone calls if I do lose my job. It’s the nature of the game. Managers who win football matches lose their job, let alone managers who don’t - George Burley last week, Darren Ferguson, Lawsy, Big Sam, blah, blah, blah. Don’t let my position keep you awake at night. What will be, will be.”

Keane accepts that Town’s current form is far from acceptable: “The table doesn’t lie. I’m a good one to talk about what we haven’t got in terms of options coming off the bench, but we’ve got a committed group of players, who I thought gave 100% for the club. I appreciate that that only gets you so far, but it’s a good starting place, let me tell you.”

The Blues boss again bemoaned his team's lack of quality in and around the box: “The final ball is the hardest part of football. We lacked a little bit of an aerial threat towards the end when Rory went off and we lost Gareth at half-time.

“Forest are a big, strong team and we looked more dangerous hitting them on the break and we had God knows how many corners and freekicks in decent areas, but Forest defended well.”

Keane refused to blame ill-fortune despite Damien Delaney’s own goal separating the sides: “In sport and football there are fine lines between winning and losing. I wouldn’t say we were unlucky today, I think we should have done better in terms of defending the straight ball.

“As for the own goal, you look back at the Swansea game, there was the same type of goal where it got caught under a defender’s feet. I’m always telling players not to be surprised when the ball lands at their feet, whether that’s in the attacking box or their own box. I don’t think it’s about being unlucky.”

Keane believes his side were worthy of more than a single point over the Christmas period: “We’ve got one point out of a possible six. I’m convinced we deserved more than that, but I’m sure you’re sick of me saying that, it’s been a year and a half of me saying the same old stuff.

"We need to do a little bit more. We don’t score enough goals and you’ve got to score goals to win football matches.”

DEAD MAN WALKING. For goodness sake Evans have the courage to act before it is too late. One freak result in a blizzard will not save us from relegation.

Been reading this board for many years and following town for 27. I'd just like to say that moaning here won't make any difference. Why on earth doesn't someone organise an online petition, spk to contacts at the press, mount a telephone campaign to the club etc? He's got to go asap and by just venting frustration here we won't achieve anything.

And I would do this myself, but living in Tokyo is not helpful in terms if logistics.

Pls someone, do something.

Could be a good opportunity for M.E. to act now as there are currently several well known managers who are without a club or maybe tempted to Town for the right package and some money to spend on filling the gaps that we currently have in the squad? Town are still in (for a few more days) both cup competitions with big ties coming up but it gives a new manager a chance to see ALL the players (which includes the ones RK has fallen out with) and put some shape in the side and desire to play for Town again in a more settled side before the next league game against Millwall, which is looking like another tough game!

Please act NOW Evans and get Clegg to do his last duties of firing Keane and following him out the door as it's clear that Keane is not likely to walk.
We have seem some good players and some great prospects leave Town due to RK inability to get the best out of any player or even give them a fair chance. With 21 contracts coming up to expire, if M.E. doesn't act soon we may find that alot of these players take the decision to leave a sinking ship!!!

Evans speak up now man before its too late... what is your plan, what are your dreams for our beloved club, will u walk when we go into league one? Your seeming lack of concern is a disgrace, if u treat all your customers like this I'm amazed u have a business at all.... sack keane and that muppet clegg before its too late!!!!!

I suspect Mr. Keane may be shown the door if there are poor showings in the cup

I thought Town played ok yesterday, just final third yet again...some good approach play and good passing at times but yet again some very strange tactics employed by the gaffer

My opinion is no different from most and hopefully the sagas with the fans yesterday at the end of the game will maybe jolt something in Evans' brain to make him see that Keane just isn't the bloke for us.
I fear though he'll get the transfer window and beyond to 'sort it out' hopefully i'm wrong but i can't help but think at any other club he would've gone by now.
I don't think we have that bad a group of players, they/we just need a manager in the mould of someone like Owen Coyle at Bolton, a good man manager and motivator. Just look at the difference in them under him and the main thing he has given them is a self belief that they can achieve both individually and as a team and we can all see the results and the contrast in our squad for ourselves.

When will you realise that the days of our club being regarded as a " big must play for club " are long gone ! They went with the Cobbolds ! Today football is no longer about pride in the shirt ( club , town ) but how much will I be paid ! Football is now nothing but big business ( profit & loss ) and if owners are not prepared to pay the wages being asked for they will not attract the better players ! RK stated that players had been ready to sign but the deals had not been done , was that because of lack of money on offer ? We know that most of the players released by RK had to go because they were being paid more than the club wished to pay and he was under orders to get the wage bill down ! What point is there in saying a new manager will be treated any differently when the club has shown it will not get involved in silly money deals ! When clubs go down this route they will suffer in player terms , when did any of you change job for less money ? If the owner is not prepared to fund the better players ( high earners ) then be prepared to be in a less than welcome situation for some time to come !!!! The use of home grown talent takes a lot longer to bear fruit and has a lot of frustration for everyone . RK has tried to bring the club forward into the modern day way of football , at the owners request , but is not being given the support ( or understanding ) needed to finish the job !

put another record on! if Rhodes wasn't released he would have blocked the progress of Wickham who is now valued at x-times more than Rhodes (who no one else has yet bid for)

Jordan Rhodes leaving was a terrible decision especially considering he had only just arrived at the club.

I don't know what I find more depressing at the moment:the state of our football team or the level of personal and racist abuse posted on this site.
How the hell does anyone on this site know for sure that they are more knowledgeable about football than Clegg. What we do know is that he is employed by ME and like any employee who wants to keep his job ,follows his boss's orders.
When RK was hired as manager I, in common with thousands of other fans was excited.I wanted him to succeed - he was a winner and his own man and I truly believed he would get us into the Premiership. After all he had surely learnt from 2 of the greatest ever British managers AND he had pulled Sunderland up from the depths of the Championship to become Champions in his first season.
After 20 months I now know that he is not going to do this at Ipswich but I don't believe he is hanging on for a payoff - he doesn't need the money. But he is a proud man who loves football, wants to succeed as a manager and can't be seen to walk out on a sinking ship. I believe in horses for courses - successful managers find their right clubs - they don't succeed everywhere they go, although obviously some are more talented than others. If RK stays in football he may find his right club - it isn't Ipswich.
None of the managers currently out of work particularly appeal to me. They are usually out of work for a reason.
Curbishly - safe but Charlton was probably HIS right club
O'Neill - has loftier ambitions, and any way didn't use the outstanding young players coming through at Villa
Brown - to0 fond of himself.
Big Sam - did it at Bolton but hate his style of football
Laws - useless
Strachan - ditto.
The exciting young managers are there but they are in employment already and why should we feel we can poach them.
One more thought - how would Town fans have reacted if the manager ME had replaced Magillton with was Ian Holloway. Be honest noww!

Anybody who for one moment thinks Keane should resign is living in some sort of far flung planet.

He is on a very lucrative contract at the moment, and by resigning he would be forfeiting all of that.

However, if he were to be sacked, Town would have to agree a settlement with him and pay him off.

For him, it pays to be sacked - excuse the pun.

If he does go, Danny Wilson from Swindon please.

Morning Genuine Ipswich Town Supporters ( GITS! copyright BS).

The Invisible Man is in a bind.

He is short of cash, as evidenced by his gobbling up of most of the Walters fee and his instruction that player movements should be funded from the Club's own cash flow. He would doubtless welcome some transfer income this month, the bulk of which he would also absorb to write down the Club's debt to him. But this is unlikely to materialise, unless you believe the Wickham hype.

The advertising/marketing appeal of ITFC and Keano is wearing thin, given that it is taking a lot of bucks to achieve a small bang. He could attempt to buy his way into the Premiership, but this is capital intensive, given the state of the team and Keano's shortcomings as a manager, and hugely risky. Hurdle rates are unlikely to be met.

All the objectives set when he acquired ITFC have failed to materialise and an early exit would suit him and his FD. But who would take on a loss-making and poorly-managed football club where half the fan base is fish?

He will need all his negotiating skill to get himself out of this one in a hurry.

Oh, and FORK, by the way, now I've put my football hat back on.

TractorRoy - on what factual basis do you state that Rhodes staying would have stopped Wickhams progress ? Two youngsters on very small wages could easily have come through together compared to signing & loaning Scotland,Priskin,Martin,Fallon,John,Murphy,Healy for a lot more money which have limited Wickhams progress a lot more .
Perhaps when the clown that is Keane moves his circus out of town you can jump on his tractor and follow him, as stronger voiced opinion against his dire reign may have ended it much sooner and we would not be in this awful position .

And meekreech..you talk absolute drivel ,we are in the middle of an economic crisis and our chairman has spent a large amount of money on transfers for which Keane has not provided one outstanding player who could help us push on from the team he inheireted . Two of his big signings are loaned or due to be loaned ,Martin and Priskin £ 3.5 million gone ,apart from a few games last year Delaney has looked decidely dodgy . Leadbitter for 3.5 million is a joke and way over priced ,Charlie Adam cost 500,000 ! His loan deals have been more miss than hit and are Premier players dropping down on big wages .
So why you think any business man would throw more money at it is beyond me ,but to actually blame him for Keanes bad signings and lack of management ability to get a team with width ,pace ,passing and teamwork and tactics is incredible .And do you honestly believe that the likes of Garvan and Stead were on more money than the likes of Scotland and Edwards or Martin are being paid to drop down a division ,because if you do you are in a dreamland with your hero Keane who believes we are not far away from being a good team .
Norwich loaned lots of players from the prem the season they went down ,now they concentrate on improving their players and signing from lower leagues notice the difference ?

No Roy, your best isn't good enough so just do the decent thing and walk (just like you did out the World Cup, remember?) If it's slipped your mind just cal your mate Mick McCarthy and he'll fill you in.

Can't believe he let someone like Stead go when we are having trouble scoring goals like we are.

You have taken an average Championship side to a dreadful one and spent s**tloads of money to boot. Unless something happens REAL SOON we are facing the very real possibility of being a League One side next season. Well, you did say 2 years to another level, just the wrong direction that's all.

Can't wait for your new signings and listen to what you rue and bemoan after the next game.

Just f**k off loser

I have read with interest all of the comments regarding RK most of the season.
Having been a blues fan for 39 years now , but unfortunately mostly limited to watching live on TV now due to moving to Aberdeen , I have a few comments of my own.

a)Ipswich look far better in defence than they did last year, so in real terms have progressed.
b)In midfield they suffer from the same problem as England with the Gerrard/Lampard situation, ie same type of players playing in the same team which is predictive and ineffective and easy for the opposition to counter. What has really been missing for a few seasons now has been that creative player to take hold of a game and open things up. Keane had this at utd with Beckham. Look at why QPR are so good this season, defence not that great, but Adel in midfield takes hold of the game and runs it, feeding their strikers or scoring himself. He did not cost QPR the earth.
c) Stikers, I will probably go against the grain here, but I believe we need to unload Wickham now. In reality it is a case of when not if Wickham goes eventually, so you have to assess if he is worth holding onto because he is doing a job for you now or not. With no goals since last April, I would suggets he is not doing anything for us in our hour of need. Compared to Bent who was doing something for us before he departed.
I think with Scotland/Priskin/Forlan we have proven championship goal scorers.
This gets onto my final point on the team:-
d) Wingers. This is where we have definately been lacking for a good few seasons now, and along with the creative midfielder mentioned above is a gap that needs filing in this window. RK tried it with Lee Martin, but he had no consistency(bad buy) , Edwards looks good , but again needs THAT midfielder to make him more effective. Civelli? dont know what is going on here? Medical Insurance Claims?

So all in all, offload Wickham to fund the 2-3 player gap we have.

Some other comments on here have mentioned the business side of things on here and I fully agree with this.

Which brings me to RK.

I admired RK as a player, and also admire his no-nonsense approach to the todays modern footballers. I think his hunger and determination is a good model for the youngsters in the club coming through.
I think the future can go 2 ways, either ME gets to a point of no return as already agreed with RK and RK departs, or ME supports RK and funds him in Jan.

Having watched Aberdeen as my now home team, this season has been very much like Ipswich. Big expectant crowds remembering the glory days. Big name manager MM not delivering through his team. Semi-Final of League Cup , but 1 from bottom of league and playing crap football most of the time.
Can a change of manager make a difference with the same players? Well Aberdeen sacked MM and installed Craig Brown, 3 matches and 7 points from 9 that should have been 9 from 9. Performances - look better.
But Aberdeen like Ipswich , have to rely on Youth system , and that takes time, alongide 1 or 2 shrewd signings.

So dont hold on for RK departing, I believe he will see out his contract, and get supported in Jan Window by ME. Lets hope he makes the right signings.

I must admit i have been patient with Keane and wanted to see if he could build a side that could make us serious contenders for promotion to the premier league but now my patience is wearing thin.

Keane for me makes very odd decisions to often, especially when it comes to the team selections and how we set out to play at times. As many of you have pointed out we don't have any width or balance in the team. When it comes to who he plays i can't for the life of me understand why he doesn't use players like priskin and peters more often, instead of chucking eastman or brown at full back or putting murray on the bench. Even though peters is not the best full back by trade he has the pace and high work rate to get himself out of trouble. I feel priskin deserves to play a lot more than what he does, as soon as he plays a few matches and scores a couple of goals in that period he gets dropped and can't even get back into the squad .... why? Even other games when he doesn't score such as swansea he still puts in the effort. He shown whilst at Watford he's more than capable of scoring consistantly in the championship when he is given a good run of games.
I still think we are only 3 or 4 players off being a decent side in the championship but Keane doesn't help himself by playing who we have atm out of position ( o'dea, colback, eastman, brown sometimes)

Excellent posting Aberdeenblue.

Agree on Wickham and the need for wingers.

Apart from his other failings, one thing that is becoming very obvious is that Keane is finding it difficult to attract the type of players we need so even if ME is prepared to provide the money will it make a difference?? Can 6 months of a contract really cost that much? Maybe ME does not want to admit his decision to appoint to RK was wrong.

Martus added 12:11 - Jan 4
After that poor, poor Not Forest game, i think your best is simply not good enough. The style we play is the reason we dont get goals, the constant long balls we play just not work and Wickham look frustrated. Keane keeps talking about srtikers, but what we really need is a creative midfielder who can produce the final pass for our strikers to feed off of.

Swansea were a prime example of how good football can be played and still be competing. They destroyed us with their passing game and tore our defence appart. Only problem is Arsenal are a million times better with this style, which means a hrashing is on the cards.
