Clegg: New Manager In the Coming Days Friday, 7th Jan 2011 12:05
Chief executive Simon Clegg says he hopes to appoint Town’s new manager in the coming days. Clegg was speaking at a Portman Road press conference this morning where he confirmed Roy Keane’s exit from the club.
Clegg said: “I hope to be in a position to make an announcement regarding the new manager over the coming days and I can assure you that he will have the support and the resources available to help him to achieve the objectives we have set for this club.
“This morning I have been up at the training ground and have spoken to the coaching staff, to all of the players and separately to the senior professionals. I have also asked coach Charlie McParland to take over as caretaker-manager. I would expect him to be in place as caretaker-manager for as long as necessary until such time as we are able to appoint and announce a new manager.
“Charlie will certainly be responsible for preparing and leading the team for our vital game in the FA Cup against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and if necessary the Arsenal game as well.”
Clegg says the Blues game Keane ample time to succeed but that a line had to be drawn: “In the best traditions of the club, we wanted to give Roy Keane sufficient time to get things right and to improve the situation. However, as he has said himself on a number of occasions, the performances on the pitch since November simply haven’t been good enough.
“Despite investment in the playing staff there was a lack of improvement on the pitch and the results speak to themselves.
“We all carry a degree of responsibility for this failure and I include myself in this, but I am absolutely convinced that with a new manager we will be able to achieve the objectives and goals we have set for the club.
“Ultimately results have to rest on the shoulders of the manager and as Roy has frequently said himself, the table doesn’t lie.
The chief executive, who dismissed claims that the club was in a mess, says Town are still looking upwards despite their current position of 19th: “We have taken the decision to terminate his contract now halfway through the season, we now have a real and meaningful opportunity to improve our position up the Championship table.
“Whilst we recognise we are only three points off the relegation zone, we are looking up towards the play-off zone and not down."

First and foremost some fans on here seriously need a reality check! Hodgson, Jol, Allardyce and O'Neil will never consider us! Get a huge grip on reality! I'm relieved Keane has gone and wish to say thanks for his efforts, it just wasn't his time. I expect Paul Jewell to be appointed even with Clegg doing the mandourity "denying" and will give it 48hrs mark of respect till he is appointed. If it's Gary Megson we will go nowhere and will consider my season ticket renew. I'm excited but also very apprehensive and who will be our next manager, I really want O'Driscoll, perfect match for us and will be given time. But my faith in the establishment has been dented, and worry who they will appoint. The king is dead. Long live the king.

(On 7 January 2011, the dismissal of Roy Keane as Ipswich Town manager sparked reports that Jewell was about to be appointed manager of the Suffolk club after two years out of the game.[24]) This has been put on Under Paul Jewell On wikipedia. Ive been looking at his record and it aint bad people. 4 promotions and only 1 relegation. Bradford - Promotion to prem and survived, was given good money at the time to achieve this. Then resigned Sheffield Wednesday - Mid table, Club in debt. Sacked Wigan - 2nd season Promoted from old division 2 to div 1, 3rd season pipped to a play off place 1st season in division 1, 4th season and 2nd in divison 1 gained promotion to the premiership and survied in his 5th season. He then resigned. Derby County - Relegated From the premiership on 11 points, however billy davies was part of that season. He then finished 18th in the championship and then resigned after a 1-0 defeat to ipswich on the final game of that 2008 season. Not a bad record at all people. I cant see why people are soo pesimistic about him or any 1 one. You wanted keane gone he has so be happy who ever we get. I personally think jewell will do a good job and does have a proven track record at this level apart from when at derby, howver they had no money. He seems to do well with a club who has a bit of money and tends to buy well so that looks promising and given the time and money he will keep us away from relegation + next year give a promotion push. 4 promotions and 1 relegation form the prem is a good record like it or not.

Why isn't Roy Keane in charge for Chelsea and Arsenal? If ITFC took the League Cup seriously there is a chance of a Wembley Cup Final. Roy Keane would have the best chance of preparing the team for success in these games. If ME and Simon Clegg are so clever why disadvantage the club before these important games?

I just wonder about the motivation of some of the names suggested here. Clegg needs to be careful that we don't end up with someone whose intention is to use teh Ipswich contract to pay off the mortgage on the Villa in the Algarve before retreating back into the cosy world of Sky punditry.

I haven't posted here before. I've supported Ipswich since I went to my first match in 1957. Its sad to see any manager go but we all accept it hasn't worked out for Roy Keane - we are in a worse position than when he started. The problem with sacking a manager is that you have to replace him. This usually means that you have to select from who is available. Theose who are available are usually in that position because they have been unsuccessful in their previous situation - Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce & Chris Hughton being exceptions. I am not filled with optimism at the prospective appointment of Paul Jewell - If it happens I will hope that he brings success without much expectation. The appointment of Megson would be a recipe for disaster so I hope like hell that won't happen. Personally I would hope that it would be someone who has previous connections with the club. Several managers did quite well with no funds and giving Joe Royle or Jim Magilton another go wouldn't distress me. George Burley also did well until he got into the unknown territory of the Pemier League. Lets hope that whoever we get pushes us up the table.

Katemoss - Err . have you not been watching us the last 18 months ? It is all about us staying the Championship - Of course I would love to beat Arsenal but REALLY ..it is ARSENAL ..If anything we have more chance without him - maybe the players will be play with flair rather than being afraid of making a mistake and being sent to grass Venus and Mowbray

I just had a disturbing vision .... STEVE MCCLAREN. Can you imagine him trying on a Suffolk accent after the Dutch attempt ....? I think his job is under threat at Wolfsburg too, isn't it? But then again, apart from the iffy England spell, he hasn't had such a bad record as club manager, winning the League Cup with Boro, guiding them to a UEFA Cup final and winning the Dutch Eredivisie with FC Twente. Nah, ME wouldn't, would he? SCHTOPP!! My choices would be: 1. Martin O'Neill (unlikely) 2. Alan Curbishley (with Matty H as No.2? Very decent prospect) 3. Paul Jewell (Derby aside, he has a reasonable management record) 4. Erm, can't think of many others! Hoddle, Keegan, Allardyce, Strachan, Megson etc are either too horrible to contemplate or highly unlikely. But then again ME probably wants a Big Name to attract the media interest. So maybe he will make the funds available to make an attractive enough offer to tempt an unlikely chap down to Suffolk. Chris Hughton would make a decent coach, but really not convinced of his managerial pedigree. I may get shot down for saying this, but its a real pity that Neil Warnock isn't a free agent at the moment ..... Whoever it is ... welcome and COYB!

For me, it has to be someone with experiance as a manager who can also attract players for can do a job for us, we have had enough players come here for talks then turn us down flat, hence why we are in the sh1t we are in now,who ever it is good luck and he will have everyones support for at least a few months

In all seriousness I don't think I'll be too dismayed if Paul Jewell gets the Town job. We have to be realistic about the current stature - and perilous predicament of our club - and realise that someone like Jewell is the kind of manager we can attract. I'm not sure how many managers would relish the train-wreck that is Ipswich Town at the moment, regardless of our history and prestige. The likes of O'Neill, Curbishley (unfortunately), Allardyce, et al are literally out of our league. They've built up their careers to the point where they can, quite rightfully, sit it out for a higher profile job. Jewell was a rising young English manager at one point. He did a fantastic job at Wigan and performed a minor miracle at Bradford. Everyone points to Derby and his failings there but the Rams were a terrible side that year - nowhere near ready for the Premier League - and I don't know how many managers could have saved them that year. If Jewell does get the job I'm right behind him, even if he's not my first choice.

I would love to see O Driscoll with an experience assistant say Ray Wilkins I believe we need a manager who wants to play the game the right way which is a quick passing game with wingers and two strikers. I would hate to see megson here he is a boring bloke played for the scum and his football is even more boring than we put up with under Keane!

I hope they understand that the next manager is probably the most important of the recent era. The pressure is to pull the players into line and actually get them playing better. Not too hard as we have been unlucky, think Notts Forrest we scored there goal! But the second and most important thing to do is get the fans behind you. I think keane's major falling was that he never explained in great detail what he was trying to do. hence a lot of people didn't like him. Clegg and Evans need to learn man management skills as well, give them help if they look out of water. Not a text or phone call.... I'm hoping it's not Jewell but we are not in control so sit back and enjoy the gossip...

Although inevitably Roy had to go - people should be careful what they wish for. At this stage of the season, considering we have sacked Roy, we need to appoint a better replacement. Some will say it couldn't be worse, but I urge you to compare Roy's record with some others - believe it or not, Roy's record is BETTER than Paul Jewell's for example. His win perentage is far superior here than Jewell's at Derby's. I hope the board make the right decision, but other than Curbs, I really don't see who is a FAR better replacement. If we go for Megson then we should all give up!
