Clegg: New Manager In the Coming Days Friday, 7th Jan 2011 12:05
Chief executive Simon Clegg says he hopes to appoint Town’s new manager in the coming days. Clegg was speaking at a Portman Road press conference this morning where he confirmed Roy Keane’s exit from the club.
Clegg said: “I hope to be in a position to make an announcement regarding the new manager over the coming days and I can assure you that he will have the support and the resources available to help him to achieve the objectives we have set for this club.
“This morning I have been up at the training ground and have spoken to the coaching staff, to all of the players and separately to the senior professionals. I have also asked coach Charlie McParland to take over as caretaker-manager. I would expect him to be in place as caretaker-manager for as long as necessary until such time as we are able to appoint and announce a new manager.
“Charlie will certainly be responsible for preparing and leading the team for our vital game in the FA Cup against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and if necessary the Arsenal game as well.”
Clegg says the Blues game Keane ample time to succeed but that a line had to be drawn: “In the best traditions of the club, we wanted to give Roy Keane sufficient time to get things right and to improve the situation. However, as he has said himself on a number of occasions, the performances on the pitch since November simply haven’t been good enough.
“Despite investment in the playing staff there was a lack of improvement on the pitch and the results speak to themselves.
“We all carry a degree of responsibility for this failure and I include myself in this, but I am absolutely convinced that with a new manager we will be able to achieve the objectives and goals we have set for the club.
“Ultimately results have to rest on the shoulders of the manager and as Roy has frequently said himself, the table doesn’t lie.
The chief executive, who dismissed claims that the club was in a mess, says Town are still looking upwards despite their current position of 19th: “We have taken the decision to terminate his contract now halfway through the season, we now have a real and meaningful opportunity to improve our position up the Championship table.
“Whilst we recognise we are only three points off the relegation zone, we are looking up towards the play-off zone and not down."

Alan Brazil said this morning that he spoke to Curbishley a few weeks ago and he told him he would love the Ipswich job! I think Paul Jewell has got it though.....who knows how they all come across in interview and lets be honhest paul jewells record is pretty decent from what he's had to work with!

Somebody suggested we make an approach for Redknapp. I think this is a great idea. Plus she's got a lovely singing voice.

Dear Lord, I'm not really a religious person but I fear that we might divine intervention to prevent the appointment of Jewell as the next manager of ITFC. Anyone but him or Fat Sam or Megson.

I wouldnt mind Paul Jewell TBH. He may have had a bad time at Derby (the self confessed worst team ever to play in the Prem) but he is proven at getting VERY unfasionable teams there (Bradford and Wigan FFS). And you couldnt imagine anyone more opposite to Roy Keane in character. Maybe he can do the man-management that RK couldnt do

Just a pity that Clegg is'nt going as well, I hope that we can get in some decent coaching staff as well because the present set up clearly is'nt up to much.

Im very very worried for our prescious club.... Yes, sacking Keane was the right thing to do (not soon enough in my opinion) but where do we go from here? We clearly have people in charge of our club who know nothing about football, so what will the outcome be.. Whether it is a decent manager or not, i doubt they will be given much in the way of funds as Keane spent so much, which means that he will be lumbered with bunch of cart-horses that Keane brought in... Will they be given time to give the squad a much needed reshape, or will they be judged over 6 months and sacked?? I think we are on a rocky slope and the decision needs to be made VERY carefully. I hope they have learned their lessons from Keanes appointment 'You cant appoint someone to be a name for your brand, football is more than that'. In my opinion i think the best option would be to appoint someone young, with new ideas and let them get this club started again, even if it means dropping into league 1 to do it....

Let's face it we won't be approaching an employed manager as we'll have to pay compensation, I like the idea of hughton but has he had much more managerial experience than keane? Jewell is the best option IMHO not a big fan of curbs, the likes of meson or dowie would be disastorous!!

Good honest post by thetruth - so called fans on here are deluded - "play football the Ipswich way" - and what is that then haven't seen much evidence of that over past 7 years - it's been long ball sh!t mostly. As for trying to attract a manager of the calibre of O'Neil or Hodgson - what a laugh! As I have said before on here - you need to wake up and face reality - we are an average team in an average league and miles away from the Premiership - just get back to basics don't set unrealistic targets and support the team PR is like a graveyard every week...

I don't understand why people are having a go at Clegg/ME? Can someone please explain. I thought Clegg did well with the press conference. Is it a case that no Keane has gone, you waste of space "fans" need to moan all the time. It seems that ipswich are damned of they do and damned if they don't. Rather than speculate and get angry at an appointment that hasn't happened, lets be patient and see what actually materialises.

Surely its Norwich fans asking for the hodge. I don't want to hear that name again. Houghton or Jewell please.

To all those saying - "you'll see, we will live to regret, not a sacking club blah d blah" just how much worse did you want it to get before Town took some desisive action?! Relegation?! Still think there would have been some people saying "give him time" when we were floundering in league 1, losing ugly like we have been this season!! Unbeleivable attitude, totally baffling...

Nobody has mentioned Brian Laws yet...assuming he hasn't got a job elsewhere. Not someone I would want in though.

Please not Jewell ! When a manager gets relegated with a record low points total it shows his skill ! My suggestion is Terry Butcher with Matt Holland as they both have the ITFC pedigree needed for the future ! TB is doing well in Scotland and MH is still local both with the ITFC passion in their blood ! Jewell would be working as a manager if he was any good ! He has not featured for the last 2 years so is going to be a bigger gamble than keeping RK ! His record makes me fear for our future and feel relegation is a cert ! SC says the resources will be made available to him that RK would have had so it means more low price players or deals not done ( as was for RK ) due to cost ! I give the new manager ( whoever it may be ) 5 games before the knives come out !

It would be good to think that whoever is appointed will get the full support of the fans that he is going to need to get us out of this mess. Too many fans have their pre-conceived ideas about who they want and their constant moaning doesn't help. Prior to Joe Royles arrival a lot of fans voiced their opposition and he turned out to be the best of the recent bunch. I hope everyone can put aside their opinions and just support the club.

After the unfortunate (and quite frankly disturbing) 'home video' incident I'm not sure I can take Paul Jewell seriously ever again.

Yup I agree, Hughton of Jewell for me too

Brockleyblue you plum... If you knew anything about football at all you would know that it is their fault we are in this mess.. I dont blame Keane, or any of the players that he brought in, Clegg and Evans = 2 non football people. They appointed Keane as a name for the ME brand and no other reason than that... Keane has done exactly what i said he would from the beginning so i place no blame on him, i blame the fools who brought him in

I know the bookies have stopped taking bets on Jewell but lets remember that both Sky and the bookies were favourites for England to win thw 2018 world cup, then looked what happend! I don't think there is such a thing as a secret in football anymore and that we will get Jewell. I could think of a lot worse, he has a decent record and only inherited a pi$$ poor derby side. Realistically there aren't many better about.

The reason they stopped taking money on Jewell is because he has got a new job but it isn't the Ipswich job.

brockleyblueboy I agree with you 100%. Clegg is a polished performer and merely administrates. Evans clearly tells him the financial restraints so what else can he do. Evans saved this football Club and we should not forget it. He has now had to fork out for ridding of Keane and will have to fork out again for new players. We have a lot to be grateful for and yet they get lambasted on here - I despair. As for the Manager I cringed when Staurt Jarrold mentioned Megson - it looks like Jewell who is an OK appointment and with Chris Hutchings losing his job at Walsall he will obviously be his number two and replace Laughlin - more compensation for Evans to pay. As for people suggesting Burley thats gets my heckles up as the bloke helped bankrupt the Club wasting 10M on players that were not needed a la Keane. Back to Evans and Clegg I stood by Keane up to last weekend but had to concede that this was not going to work I therefore applaud the decision but wish Keano all the best as I think he really did try but was not up to it.

meekreech: you mention Jewell's terrible record (which was at Derby, a team he took over when they were already deeply in it) and then suggerst Butcher who is doing fairly well so far in half a season! His previous managerial record is rubbish, frankly. But don't let the facts get in the way of an opinion I always say! I'm not advocating Jewell, but he has a much better managerial record than Butcher, by miles! He even kept Bradford in the Prem!

Dear Everybody that think they are the Grown ups, Social conscience or arbitter of this forum. Yes we did whinge about RK. Get over it, it will never stop. Yes we did have good reason to whinge, out position in the table is evidence enough Please do not start throwing barbs in our direction as if blamiong us for RK's dismissal Yes we are aware that we are in the brown stuff and tough times are ahead. Paying the ticket price DOES give us a permission/reason to whine No Body has signed so we can wish for whoever we want I gaurantee everybody will get behind the side on sunday and Wednesday because we are not stupid Finally if we are dreaming lets have it all... Allardyce, Houghton, Curbs or Jewell would all be good choices but hey, come on if we are dreaming why not Mourinio? I really like the idea of Jewell my self if Curbs is unavailable (who was my choice when Magilton went but I thought would not come down a division
